Please i will advice you to start small, bread business needs the owner to understand the nitty gritty of the biz, so that when you finally employ people in the future you will know what to expect from them. I will also advice you on the formular of your bread, it will stand you out in the future, don't just do what every other person does. I will also advice that you go for locally made gas oven as foreign one will be too expensive and the operation cost is almost the same for charcoal oven, secondly, there are some kind of bread that charcoal oven can't bake, for example those bread that are heavy, i don't know but i doubt if charcoal oven can do it. Please expect to make losses on the shirt term, have a back up source of income. Look for a good graphic desiner to package your nylon. In bread making, once you have started, make sure that you supply constantly. I will advice you like every other business persin to read books, start with e mirth for managers by michael garber .good nyt

Fabricate your equipment locally or buy used equipment from tge EU.
www.exapro.com or www.mascus. com. For used Chinese equipment use www.alibaba.com
However, it is highly recommend to use local fabricators.

Keep three months working capital including salaries and the cost of hiring sales staff.

Start only in new locations unserved by a current bakery. Buy a cheap vehicle for distribution.
Bakery is the best business in any Nigerian city above 3million in population. Hence it is the best business in Nigeria, period.

Ask around, there are well equipped bakeries for rent . Rent a bakery #10000 per month move in with pans of different sizes about #20000 get your ingredients ready about #15000 bake according to bookings from your customers, Get an experience baker with one apprentice (wage/salary) #2500/#50000 Arrange with a car owner to supply your product #3000 per day.
Total < #100000.

I like your enthusiasm for bread. I was once interested in having a bakery. But wanted to see how a friend's own will fare.

Sadly he had to sell it after a few years. He ran it from Diaspora. Including the cost of erecting the little bungalow he ran it from, it cost around 4m to 4.5million Naira to set up. That was around 7 years ago though.
You know running business in absentia is usually a recipe for disaster.

One advice: ensure you run it yourself and be on ground. Consider a small quantity of wholemeal bread too. There is a growing, though still small, section of people seeking to eat more healthily. I hardly eat white bread for example.

Hmm, so many factors to consider oo. Unless you really really really want to start very small. Someone had already mentioned cost of mixer. What about oven which is about 8m. Depending on the size though. Cos the one we run in my school here is about that amount.

What's your source of light? Do you plan to get a Diesel Generator? Not to discourage you, but I think your budget is way too low.

Goodluck all the same!

Before I forget o, most of the standard ones I have around here wouldn't grant me access into their production rooms. Can't see anything, they jxt most time sit me down in their office and wanting me to ask questions on anything I want to know n get answers.

Too many protocols, some keep asking me to come back to see manager or the management. Dem jxt dey turn me around.

I even feel funny at times bcus some of them act like yhu have come to steal their bakery or have ulterior motives

Hehehe, what did you expect? Open arms and hugs?

Listen most of them will see you as a potential competitor except you can convince them you are opening your own bakery in another state or city different from theirs.
Bakery is very profitable because man can not do without bread. Just make sure you make yours with a special recipe like adding honey and/or fish in your bread.

Following diligently. My opinion is to start small, gain loads of experience and expand from there. Also, as already mentioned, ensure you have ready cash for several months in advance. Make use of locally made equipment till you're satisfied with your work and how balanced and beautiful your particular recipe is. Goodluck, Godspeed and best wishes. I'd definitely own a bakery in future as soon as I can raise a million

Bakery is now every where. Every minimart and super market in my vicinity at Lekki has their own bakery. I kid you not. I do not see why people should buy bread when you can bake it for consumption right from your home oven that comes with the stove.

It is just butter, flour, baking powder, nutmeg, sugar or sacarine and some other additives in a pan and at the right temperature.

Such a simple stuff or buy the rotary electric oven around a few millions and start making all sort of wheat products.

Gamble to loose but win eventually with a crack team of salesmen

Very possible to run any biz in absentia. Deploy technology and do batch production, with each batch you know your target turnover and profit.Release money per batch and talk regularly to customers and distributors, you will hear enough to know how your staff are performing. Watch the fuel and power cost, they also tell you about production level.

Please don't start your business with a construction project, building your own factory.
Rent in a convenient place. There are also medium size bakeries made out of 20ft containers for instance.
Cash is king. Actually cash is also queen, prince and princess.
Don't "over establish", just turnover quickly and make profit.
It's all about bread quality, efficient operations and sales, sales and more sales.

Actually many diaspora people do lots in absentia. Building houses, running hotels, processing plants, farms, pure water factories, etc.

The idea is to come visit Nigeria regularly.
Time was when people were a bit more honest. If you left abroad over 20 years ago, you might not realise how things have changed. grin

Absolutely correct. You might not make much profit in the beginning yet expenses will still be incurred. Cash in hand is crucial.

At times people have a plot of land are so sure they want to stay in it long term. But the land may not be in the best location for the business. And a good location is important.
