So these firms, because they want to make better business decisions, grow their business, stay relevant in the ever changing business world, they resort to hire expatriates who are professionals from technologically advanced countries like the US to help analyze their data. So this void created by a lack of indigenous professionals has created this burning desire in me to delve into this field and with my background in computer science which has exposed me to curriculum in Maths and Stat like numerical analysis, operations research and so on, a masters in this course will equip me with the technical and analytical skills that I need to flourish as an effective data analyst when I return to Nigeria and will also ensure I fill the gap for a lack of indigenous professionals in the field. Me: Yes. I applied to two other schools asides TAMUK.

VO: OK. So why do you wanna study at TAMUK? Why did you choose them?

Me: There is this on going research on Big Data and Computing carried out by Professor Steven Sedory that I am interested in. This area is new here in Nigeria and has a lot of prospects.

Also, the Curriculm at TAMUK is designed in such a way that it permits flexibility. That's is to say it will allow me choose from electives in other programmes like operations research and numerical analysis that are in line with my career interest.

They also have great faculties and excellent research facilities like the Javelina algebra computer laboratory and the James C. Jernigan library which is one of the largest library in the whole of Texas with over 600,000 volumes of print books, journals and government publications.

VO: Did you write any entrance exams?
Me: Yes. I wrote a standardised test.

VO: Which of them?

Me: I sat for the GRE.

Me: I scored 299 overall. 149 in the verbal, 150 in the quantitative and 4.0 in the analytical writing.

Me: Yes Ma'am.

Sorry for your unfortunate delay... My observation is as follows
You could have prepared a better response for the bolded response ahead of your interview! Saying your confidence level has improved is vague. It simply means you didn't understand why you were denied the first 2 times. If you did, you would have brought them into the discussion. I presume you were denied based on Section 214(B)? You would have found ways to demonstrate strong ties to Nigeria... You're single, you're not employed or self employed? You don't have university funding... You could have done better.

Just got admitted to Morgan state university but had to defer till fall ...

This is a list of very nice recommendations, but the 3rd point is not a valid one. 2 years work experience is not on the low side for an MBA program-except the applicant is looking for a sort of waiver for GRE/GMAT in case the B-schools offer that to students and 3-5 years work experience is required to be eligible for the waiver. Remember there is professional MBA/Executive MBA, and the normal traditional one. With 2 year work experience, a traditional MBA is cool. Remember 2 years is equivalent to full 24-month work experiences, and that is a rich background an MBA can be obtained on. I have a friend who got an MBA on a 1 year work experience and graduated first class from a university in Texas.
So, this student don't need to wait till 2020. He/she can start immediately. There are even better B-schools still taking in application for MBA in addition to the ones you mentioned.

I'm suggesting GRE because I'm assuming you are considering a role in Corporate Finance and not Investment Banking. If you're considering Investment Banking, then it will require more effort as you will need to ace the GMAT with a 90+ percentile score and also invest significantly in networking.

2. Your undergraduate in geology makes you a non-traditional applicant to an MBA. It may be a good thing if you leverage that in your essays. B-schools need diversity, and I don't think they have many geologists in their application pool.

3. Two years work experience is quite on the low side for an MBA. MBA is not a degree for entry-level roles. So, I'll suggest you work towards Fall 2020 and by then, you should have 3 years of work experience which isn't bad.

4. While selecting programs, I will advise you to be open to programs that will give you added skills such as marketing, healthcare management, and analytics. It makes you more versatile and more competitive on the job market. You can do this by selecting dual degrees or by choosing concentrations in those MBA programs.

5. I will recommend UND's Mendoza MBA/MSBA dual degree (STEM), Arizona State MBA, Rochester's Simon B-School (they have a STEM concentration) and Penn State's Smeal MBA. The STEM programs are better in terms of work opportunities because they allow you more chances for the H-1B.

6. If you check carefully, these schools are among the top 50 B-schools in the US and they give significant financial aid for these programs. Those that are not within the top 50 should be very close to top 50. Don't (I repeat, DON'T) apply to a >80th ranked MBA program even if you get full funding. Brand and network is the game in b-schools and your career chances are very very tough when you attend those programs.

I'll like to make the following clarifications;

1. I NEVER said he cannot gain MBA admission with less than 2 years work experience. A few business schools accept people with 0 years work experience to MBAs.

2. However, it is not advised that someone with less than 3 years experience join an MBA program except the person has worked with companies like Goldman Sachs or McKinsey. MBA is a degree you use to climb the leadership ladder in organizations and if you don't have significant work experience before you enter, you may not enjoy the benefits of an MBA. It is totally wrong to complete an MBA and start seeking entry-level roles. A better strategy is to get some work experience before an MBA and take a leap into managerial roles after the MBA. That explains why schools like Stanford (even though they accept fresh graduates for MBA) still have a class profile with ~4 years work experience.

3. A lot of people without work experience rush into MBA programs but it is a poor strategy because, after graduation, they end up in jobs that recruits undergraduates. It doesn't maximize your earnings and it doesn't make you better off after spending two more years in school.

4. So, my advise for him to wait until he has 3 years work experience before applying for an MBA is for him to maximize his post-MBA salary and also use the MBA to take a leap into managerial roles. If he jumps into an MBA with less than 2 years work experience, he will most likely be employed as an Analyst or a Senior Analyst as opposed to a Manager role if he has >3 years work experience + an MBA.

You said What's on my mind. Saying your confidence level is better now is a big turn off. How does that does show ties that the V.O is looking for, as she sees you as potential immigrant? He shouldn't give up, some even got it at the 7th time. Let him prepare well and refire during fall.

However, among the documents to be submitted listed includes WAEC scratch card and the last examination result from my secondary school. What happens if I cannot provide the last examination result from my secondary school. I am not referring to WAEC result. I can provide the scratch card. I really do not understand why they require the secondary school result since I am applying to a masters program and not undergraduate. Please if you have done WES evaluation before please enlighten me on how you fulfilled this particular requirement (high school examination result). Thank you.

How can someone put a call through to the U. S Embassy in Lagos? i just want to do a follow up concerning my visa application that has been on administrative processing since December 18, 2018. My school resumption date is January 16,2019 and classes begin on January 22, 2019. I have mailed them but the reply i got was the normal generic reply.

The last examination result from your secondary school being requested by WES is your WAEC result.It is a new rule for applicants from Nigeria to have their secondary school documents (WAEC)sent to WES, regardless of the level of education they want to have evaluated.

The only thing i can deduce from his interview that lead to his denial is the sponsorship part, don't know if i am wrong ...

Now here is a recent development. He has decided to give it another trial and his interview is this week, he has been offered a GA by his department just last week only if he resumes this spring 2019 with an official letter to support it. so i would like to ask the [b]Gurus [/b]what they think about this recent development can this letter in anyway help him secure his visa ? i mean can that stand has a change of circumstance since the last time he was there?.... Another concern is that the specific GA Benefits which should include i think his monthly stipend was not included in that letter...

i personally dont recommend Self sponsoring because it reduces ties ......... Except the full money is complete , if not then VO can question how will you balance as a stundent has no incoming income . Compared to when others are sponsoring you. at least your sponsor continues working while you are in school . it a psychological thing

When it comes to US embassy there is nothing like on what grounds............ Most people are given the same reason for denial . it all subjective and based on the VO perception . In my time, a friend was denied for Wharton MBA (that proper top of the food chain ) , although given on second interview . There are no rules as it all very subjective . you just hope and pray that the day you go for Interview The VO is in your favour . it also important that one prepares well

Depends on the V.O you meet, some may find one word answer offensive, some might not. Your reply should flow with the conversation. Whether engaged or not, you are still single.

Thats the thing, the GA is not stated on his i20, he recently got the GA just last week and the school said its too late to get another i20 down to him, hence why he was given that letter...... anyway like you said ma, the only action is to try, pray and hope for the best..... his interview is tomorrow... will let you know about the outcome....Thank you Ma'am
