Good afternoon my fellow nairalander most especially the like minds from the great Agricultural section, we are the best because we feed other sections,na we be their father.
Now, let’s look into pepper farming and the benefit of starting it as a business. In the process of researching business opportunities in Nigeria, I have discovered that no one has any good reason to be poor. If you are poor, it’s either because you want to or you’ve not been properly informed. There are many things you could pick up today and walk yourself up there within the next three years. One of them is pepper farming. I'm starting my pepper farming now wish I promise to share all my activities here for correction, learning and encouragement from everyone. My goal is to generate at least 30k twice a week from my investment twice on a week.... We shall see if it's possible or not, may God help me.
I'm planting herbanero pepper (Rodo) and jalapeno (bawa)
Got my hybrid seeds from technism, Avenir f1 and forever f1 variety . I have done the nursery by broadcasting it

I did my nursery in a take away plastic which I hide in a safe place from the hand of rat, lizard and ant that normally pick the seed from the nursery bed. Some pictures attached

to get 60k weekly from a pepper farm u will need to have at least 1200 avenir pepper stands and that will be squeezed into 3 plots of land at 4feet× 4feet square spacing,it will start to yield from 100 days in dry weather and 120+ days in rainy season, hybrid fresh pepper is resistant to root knot nematodes, but it will be devastated by bacterial leaf spot and tobbaco etch virus, restricted entrance into the farm most be maintained , especially in the morning when it is wet with dew, spraying a cocktail of contact and systemic fungicide is a must every week, also pepper needs a special fertilizer of Epsom salts and cal-mag fertilizer,if u eventually gets it right u will see production of 5-7 bags every 4 days from a healthy 1200 pepper crop, today's price for a bag is 7,000k,so the weekly target is achieveable, you must prune your crops once before it forms a Y branch by cutting off the top growing tip this will create a profusion of many branches that will translate to more yield, make the stems stronger and also the plant will not grow too tall,in all pepper is an easy and straight forward crop to grow the only stressful part we encountered is harvesting the ripe fruits, from the pics shown it should have been in single grow bags and pruned already,we keep our crops in Single grow until they are ready to flower before they go out on the field,

I thank you very much for the advice, highly appreciated. For the disease and fungai attack we are aware of it and we are well ready, equipped with the necessary chemical, though we wish to go organic. I will be posting pictures of transferred seedlings from the bed to a single bag, we decided to broadcast it first and later transfer it which work perfectly for us.plans are on ground for the pruning and so many others things... I thank you very much for the concern and time to dish out the information..Daalụ nke ukwuu

putting crops like pepper , cabbage and garden egg in single grow bags makes it very very easy to manage, pls forget about the organic system, when rainfall will start u will need serious systemic fungicides, there is no insect I knew that came near the pepper plant despite the fact we planted cucumbers nearby and we are always battling one insect after the other in the cucumber farm, but they ran away from the pepper,u have to be ready during rainy season that is when BLS is rampart, use a combination of ridomil copper base and ridomil mancozeb.our garden egg in single grow bags.

if you try avenir f1 u will not look back again, the spiciy flavour is incredible, when we have it the market women hoard it for hoteliers and restaurant people they pay premium price for it, because of the out of the world goat meat scent and also 3 fruits will do for a big pot of soup, unlike the common red pepper u can put 10-15 pieces still no show, also op try and expose the seedlings to morning sunlight so it will stop being spindly and get strong stems.

this pepper is quite profitable during the rainy season, last month a bag sold for 17k, i think that the op would eventually make more than 30k per harvest if he harvest from April to December,
p.s correct me if I'm wrong gurus in the house

You are correct to some extent, during raining season the quantity of pepper that comes in from the North is very minimal and farmers producing in the south battle with fungal infection. Most farmers don't apply fungicide to their pepper due to lack of knowledge, this makes price of pepper to go up some time in the raining season but most of the time it sells most in the dry season. Thanks

we were made to believe that money does not grow on trees ,but in fresh pepper farming it has been proven wrong.

only good systemic fungicides will save a pepper farm from july-september peak of rainy season, water does not wash it off unlike contact fungicides that 2 strong rainfalls will wash off all application,as long there is a brief window of sunlight that allows a systemic application to dry on the leaves it will translocate throughout the whole crops including the roots and new leaves coming out, even if rain fall as long as the application is dry on the leafs it's OK

the two are different varieties of fresh pepper, shombo is finger like and deep reddish,it's used mostly by moi moi producers, while rodo is roundish and can come in any color from deep red to yellow,it is widely used and the most demanded,in terms of yield a good rodo variety will give more than shombo in the short term, but given the fact that the shombo pepper we planted produced for 2 years it will yield more in the long term, another strange thing we discovered about shombo is that it's resistant to all diseases that levelled our rodo farm.

a PHI of 4 days is suitable for almost most fungicides and insecticides,u Target to spray the day u will harvest so by next harvest (4 days)it would have dissipated.

I don't agree with this goggle farmers how can they plant 2.500 pepper on one plot,12.000 stands on 1 acre(6 plots),it will be a struggle to fit 2500 stands in 4 plots, and the 60-45 cm spacing just made me laugh, the recommended spacing for hot pepper on FAO site is 5feet×4feet,we did 4×4 feet square but before we start harvesting the whole place was covered,if land is small the closest spacing is one elephant shovel length from one plant to another square,60cm/50cm is for cucumbers, pepper/garden eggs are measured in feets.
