Are you trying to put your state in good light r what ? All Igbo states do this.

No offence, buh that's not true. In my villa, they don't ask for anything n average bride price is usually less than #10,000. Tho, suitors from oda Igbo states like Imo n Anambra do ask for the list because they feel uncomfortable not spending much..idk. But that's how it is, usually.

They would say it is because they are classy &one of a kind that's why they command this expensive dowry.
this ain't class but extortion that's why most igbo girls gets to 40years n still in their parents home.

And then they complain when he bars them from his house and treat their daughter like _shit. I speak from experience.

Not that I'm supporting extortion in the name of paying bride price buh an abusive person is still one whether he paid #1 or #1 million.

Some might even argue that spending a lot on the marriage might make the man appreciate the wife more, as valuable things don't come cheap..

My dear in my side bride price is 10k and the items in the list is roughly about 90k (and even this is negotiable). Shikena. You don't need to sell off your father's properties to marry a woman in Delta State.

What is happening these days is daylight robbery. It's nauseating

Bros we married in delta and I spent over 290k in paying for the bride price and list I was like what thought me here...and I married the Igbo speaking part of delta after Igbuzor the place is Ishiagu before Ukwuani

This was just last December! Those guys are terrible they said they wouldn't give us discount because they knew we are from Anambra and in Georgia stupid mind we pick money and God gave us money....the girl we came to ma=ry was so ashamed of their people

Also my guy wanted married Isoko lady also...the same thing, they even doubled it for us at a point we walked out if the wedding and that was the end!

Delta people ! Tufia ! Their bride price na die in cast

Lazy youths everywhere! We have married and we have even spent more than this ..it shows that you are ready to marry and take care of a family especially in Igbo land...They don't dash out their girls !

If you never ready abeg shut up and double your hutsle....we went don spend pass this no make noise about it and didn't even go snapping pictures up and down...

Men should stop being weaklings biko

Men selling their children.
Boys complaining but When they become men, they turn around and do the same.
They fight anyone who calls for the cessation of bride price but can’t seem to stop complaining about it.

It seems the problem is with the men
Who are the men complaining about it?
The men complaining are not from igboland and their opinions don't matter.

If a man cannot afford 500k for his in-laws, then what is he doing with a wife?

He should go hustle.

Check out the amount of money some tribes spend on senseless parties every Saturday, buying various aso ebi every now and then, it is far more expensive than a once in a lifetime marriage.

Besides, most igbos are monogamous unlike some other tribes.

It is once in a lifetime. So it has be done well.

Online aproko outlets claim this happened in Enugu, others swear it is Imo.cheesy

Regardless of where this happened, the lines between tradition and downright extortion is blurred in many cases.

Let me do a quick inventory-

A big nanny goat
2 trays of Nittol detergent
A basin of coconut
Three suitcases of Hollandis wrappers and assorted wax prints
One bag of rice
Two crates of drinks
One crate of beer

Is that a salon size pack of Profectiv Mega Growth relaxer i see there...??

Yep it is. I wonder when hair relaxer became a part of omenala. (tradition)

Emm, I sight giant can of peak milk
Something that looks like custard
A basin of big sized Canoe bar soap

I can't keep up. My eyes are aching and I'm tired of squinting. embarassed

So what happens to the struggling man who can't afford these cutthroat lists?

IBO girl go tay for dere papa houses?

This is the most pointless part of the so-called culture. Like why do this much to get married to your partner??.

"It's tradition". Culture does not make people, I'm sure someone woke up one day and made it into law. It could be scrapped that same way too. People make culture.

I'VE LONG MADE UP MY MIND THAT NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY I MAKE IN THIS LIFE I'M NEVER ENGAGING IN THIS NONSENSE. TO SAY THAT IT IS MANDATORY MAKES IT ALL WORSE.

FOR ALL THOSE SAYING CULTURE AND TRADITION I JUST HAVE TO LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY'RE IGNORANT.
ONE TIME KILLING BABIES WAS OUR CULTURE.
ONE TIME SACRIFICING VIRGINS WAS OUR TRADITION.
ONE TIME KILLING WOMEN SO THEY CAN JOURNEY WITH THE DEAD KING TO THE AFTERLIFE WAS THE CULTURE.
CUTTING PARTS OF THE VAGINA WAS PART OF OUR CULTURE.
DUMPING ADULTERERS IN THE FOREST TO DIE WAS OUR CULTURE.
7 DAYS BURIAL CEREMONY WAS THE CULTURE IN MY HOME TOWN, UNTIL SOMEONE WISED UP AND MADE SURE IT HAS REDUCED TO 3 DAYS.

I THINK THIS NONSENSE AND MANY MORE CAN BE ERADICATED SAME WAY WE'VE ERADICATED OTHERS.

What nonsense?

Nobody begged you to come marry.

In India, women pay dowry while In some parts of Nigeria, a man must show the strength of his arm financially before he can marry a woman.
Different strokes for different folks.

It used to be barns of yams in the olden days as depicted in Chinua Achebe "things fall apart" and has now modernized to other material things.

What ever works. As long as failed men are weeded out.

If in your place, they give out women two for five naira, all well and good.
Your sense of good is not universal.

This is nothing compared with the investment of the girl's father. My sisters that attended schools paying over 1 million Naira per annum for 6 years and then Private University married with these items that cannot even amount to 1million Naira does not in any way make it a big business for my father.

This is their culture and should simply be respected.

Marriage is not for everyone. If he really wants to get married, he should buckle up. Marriage shouldn't be for struggling guys. Stop encouraging almajiri mentality. Everyone must not get married.

Are you seriously reading what you wrote here? It is this kind of mentality that pushes young boys into pant robbery and ritual killing.
