Probz: I've only visited asaba, so what i say may be my opinion and not the fact, but what i've noticed is that the people who speak igbo in asaba are the Igbos coming from the east, the enuani people themselves mostly speak pidgin(especially youths) or speak their dialect when they want to talk to eastern igbos. However in general u'll notice the igbo speaking in asaba is far less than the eastern cities(like onitsha, owerri n enugu the only ones i've visited) like I said, my opinion |

darfay: I b urhobo o, currently live in port harcourt, but i grew up in warri, anyway even when i was in warri i was not going to the village like that we only drive past them when travelling, me sef my urhobo na cut n nail anoda problem I've noticed is the mentality of not only urhobo n isoko pepo, but all south southerners(save for akwaibom/crossriver pepo). Unlike the Yoruba n Igbo, the youths of the SS see their language as sumtin meant 4 d old n undope. It's normal to go a mall or youth party in lagos, ibadan, Akure n hear teens speaking yoruba or to a restaurant or club in enugu, onitsha, owerri n hear teens speaking igbo but u can't go to those places in warri, port harcourt, Benin n hear them speaking their language or even other tribes(yorubas, Igbos, etc) speaking their own language, it feels local to the SSners. Mentality problem, I use to feel that way too until i started travelling and saw that the major tribes didn't share this our menality 1 Like |

darfay: They are two Ijaw Clans that speak an Edoid language called Epie. it has its own several dialects but for now they haven't been studied and I think the way the language is dying it never would be studied. |
Re: Words From The Epie Language Of Yenagoa. by bigfrancis21: 4:13pm On Feb 17, 2019 |
fero007: You see, wherever there is a conglomerate of other tribes, native languages usually take the back seat and pidgin English becomes more prominent. Yoruba dominates in Ibadan, Akure etc because Yoruba is the sole major tribe there, same for Igbo in Enugu or Owerri but cities like Warri, PH etc are made up of several tribes, thus the major switch to Pidgin at the expense of native languages but a good number of the youths may be able to speak their native languages in private but switch to Pidgin in public. In PH for example, Pidgin English is dominant at the expense of the Ikwerre language/dialect. In Asaba, the locals have learned to use Pidgin more in Public because, by virtue of being the capital city, it accommodates other Delta tribes living in it but they are able to speak their language in private when they want to. 3 Likes |

Re: Words From The Epie Language Of Yenagoa. by Sinistami(m): 9:00pm On Feb 17, 2019 |
bigfrancis21: Only a 30% I think are fluent in Epie, at the moment even if two adults like Elders are talking it would be 40%Pidgin 60%Epie. The lounger folks that have a little grasp on the language just try to add Epie words to anywhere they can in their pidgin. like Example: Omone(dis pikin for camaraderie just like Omo in normal pidgin) !! di Afina (Woman) don Sil'è(Run which cognate in normal pidgin would be Shele) meaning in Normal pidgin: Omo The woman don run. |

darfay: Engenne is edoid too their dialect is like a mix of Igbo, Ijaw and Edo. The Epie-Attisa is an offshoot of the Engenne from the north and other Ijaw clans to the South. And yea its pretty intelligible to an extent. |

bigfrancis21: Yea that's how bad it is..In every passing Generation it reduces although the pidgin spoken is very influenced by Epie not much in accent though but in Vocabulary and structure that too is changing due to the large presence of other languages and the typical Nigerian Pidgin influencing it. |

Is der particular tin unique to epie that can differentiate them from ijaw? food, tradition, anything? 1 Like |
Re: Words From The Epie Language Of Yenagoa. by Sinistami(m): 8:36pm On Feb 20, 2019 |
magicjack: Well all Ijaw clans have their own unique traditions and food that makes them unique. And pls they is no language called Ijaw it's Izon , Ijaw is an English tongue corruption of the word Izon which itself is a corruption of the word Ijo or Ujo which is an Ancestral Name of one of their Ancestors that was said to be one of the Sons of Oduduwa that came to establish In the Niger Delta. The Ancestral name of the Ijaw people were Oru called Olu by the Igbos, but the White men used the name of their Ancestor Ujo to call the Oru people they first met on the Coast. Right now Ijaw is the name of a collection of people with shared history and culture irrespective of Language. So as you can see the Ijaw don't exactly have a Strict Homogeneous culture or language and the Epie who speak an Edoid language is even more Unique as an Ijaw Clan. |

How can an ethnic group have entirely different unrelated languages? That's fraudulent if you ask me. Andoni speaks An Ibibiod language,, yet we are told they are now Ijaw, while their Eastern Obolo brothers in Akwa ibom remain Ibibio. Epie,, Degema,, Engenni all speak Edoid languages, and we are still told they are Ijaw. Now Ijaw people are telling us that Igbo speaking Ndoki are now Ijaws too. Looks to me like Ijaw is more like a franchise than an ethnic group. 10 Likes 2 Shares |

[quote author=CooperJay post=77693426] Word! Your comment deserves a thread [/quote Language isn't the only thing used to define an ethnic group. There isn't any language named Izon anyway the one people refer to is a language spoken by the Izon subgroup of the Ijaw called Izon. The Ijaw ethnic group is mostly based on blood, Historical, Cultural and territorial ties in the sense that all these tribes or clans in the Ijaw ethnic group have shared close blood lines, cultures and history that are interwoven with each other so that's it. 1 Like |
