Thorough and balanced review of features and pros and cons and masterfully done too.

The only dissent I may have is when people talk about CC waking up earlier and sleeping later at higher voltages - I feel that yes the CC may wake earlier and sleep later but any amps/watts harvested in the wee hours must surely be very negligible - just my untested feelings on the matter.

Thanks and I agree with you.

If I would split hairs, I'd say additional harvest from earlier wake-ups and later retirements afforded by a high voltage may just add up on those 'stubborn' days when the Sun takes forever to effectively "come on stream," leading to prolonged wee hours, and during unusually long and severe overcast periods? But again, that's probably just me.

I have a question for the electricity buffs in the house.

A friend is constructing an office complex and his electrical contractor wants to install an RCD/RCCB at the service entrance to protect the whole facility (all personnel and devices downstream of the RCD/RCCB)

In order to 'improve the speed at/certainty with which the RCD/RCCB could respond to a fault and disconnect the supply', he has already jumpered/connected the Neutral and Earth bus bars in the DB with a 16MM cable - this installation is here in Lekki - while I know this practice of linking Neutral and Earth is common practice in North America and even mandated by their electrical code, I am yet to see it done here in Nigeria.

I had raised a similar question previously - what do you think? Should Neutral and Earth ever be linked here in Nigeria (I believe our transformers are star/wye wound and the neutral wire center tapped - dunno if PHCN actually Earths their neutral wire at the transformer)

Does this practice help the performance of an RCD/RCCB in any way?

The office will also have solar power tied in(where I come in grin ) - I am struggling seriously with wiring the CC Earth terminal to that same Earth bus bar in the DB that already has an AC neutral connected to it.

One of our hybrid sites that has PHCN integrated developed a fault from the grid end that caused the line sensitive system to reject grid supply and troubleshooting brought up a possible neutral fault. I checked up online and saw that a possible reason could be be a broken neutral to earth connection from the source (aka transformer). I went to the change over switch and ran a jumper wire from the neutral bar to a ground cable there. (roadside engineering, i know grin ) i had to do it to keep the site from going down.

it worked

So i think the neutral to earth is connected normally from the tx side in Nigeria

After much thought and some hours digesting IEEE 142-2007, NEC & some British electrical standards, I decided to talk to the electrical contractor to disconnect the Earth to Neutral jumper & leave the Earth unbonded.

As far as I can tell, the only purpose of a Neutral to Earth bond at a local service entrance is to shorten the return path so that an RCD can detect the live vs neutral Amp imbalance faster and therefore trip and disconnect the supply faster. Without the jumper, the fault current would still go to Earth at local facility, travel through Earth to the local transformer Earth and then return to the local service entrance at which point the RCD would disconnect the supply - a longer path to be sure but the objective is still achieved.

Interestingly, the British electrical reference manual seemed to have a Neutral to Earth bond for nearly all the transformer schemes - picture below

qIt's a wrong practice to do local bonding of earth and neutral at customers location for a TT system.

This may be one instance where it worked may not have been best practice except as a strictly temporary fix.

It seems to me you had an open neutral and by jumpering Neutral and Earth, you simply substituted the Earth wire as the return path for current.

By design, the Earth wire should carry no current unless there is a fault condition - all sorts of bad stuff could happen using the zero reference (Earth) as a return path for current on a routine basis.

@bolded.... If that was the case, would i find voltage on the neutral line and no voltage on one of the phases? Cause that's what happened.

Like you reiterated, twas a temporary fix.

My Oga

I was reacting strictly based on the information you provided (my best interpretation of it). Surely, I may be unable to accurately diagnose an electrical fault (from several KMs away and based on just one or two sentences defining the problem grin grin grin ) better than you that was 'live at the scene of the crime' (so to speak)

No offense intended at all.

It is customary in Nigeria to have one or two phases with no voltage feeding in from the PHCN mains - still for the grid to pass power through to an inverter and loads, at least 1 live phase out of the 3 available is required as the source of supply .

Given 1 live phase and no power pass through the next check would be at the return wire (Neutral) - if you were able to substitute the Earth wire as return path and thereby reestablish power, then I inferred that the Neutral was broken/open somewhere in the network esp. if the neutral was presenting as a voltage source.

It could also be that you had a short circuit somewhere within the facility or the phase and neutral touching (e.g. tree branch pushing against power line) somewhere in the grid system.

There are several possibilities, you as the man on site are best placed to diagnose the issues and bring the learnings back to the house.

With electrical faults, my personal preference is to isolate the issue for sure and fix it immediately to avoid further problems downstream.

For the first few months, I ran a PV array of about 70V which had much higher current in the line but closer to CC optimization curves. The next two years, I optimised my system by having a PV string of 100V for a charge voltage of 57.2V. While having higher VoC, this system harvested better (despite less promising optimization curve yields).
The current arrangement has 4 panels in a row for a VoC of about 140V. Wakes up earlier and sleeps later (harvest not significant). What is significant however are the harvests during overcast weather and days when panels are dust coated. I get up to 15% increment in harvest. While it might not seem like much, it makes all the difference between waking up to 88% rather than 82%. Or on deep discharge days (82% for me), ending the day on float or absorb at 99%. Over the months and years, that's a lot.

Scene of crime ke...hahahaha. pls no offense taken too. if my statement passed off as such, my apologies pls. We are all here to learn....

Wrt to your statement of atleast 1 live phase needed for the inverter. the system i am talking about is a three-phase system that is designed to lock out grid once any phase is missing and i have since contacted the undertaking that serves that site to come look into the problem, but up till now, over 2 weeks ago "they are still coming" smh grin

TBH, I'm not a guru either but hopefully the following will address why I chose the GK stable over the MK, as well as the high voltage thingy...

First of all, are you referring to the 48V model of the MK, or that you don't want to do 48V, or that it's not offered at 48V? I'll be surprised if any 48V unit is limited to 1500W, so please check again, you may just be good to go.

I don't want the 48v, my setup is 24v for now. It is supposed to replace the current 24v 1.5kva inverter that I currently use. The 3kva MK series is limited to 1500W irrespective of whether it's 24/48v

duwdu:

Having said that, my primary reason for going the GK route is the several advantages of deploying up to 450/500V DC when properly managed. Among these, are:
1. The charge controller portion should wake up earlier and retire later - gives more harvest/production time;
2. Much smaller gauge wire (so less set up cost) can be deployed over longer distances between the array and the inverter as the effect of the % drop in voltage will be negligible since voltages are quite high to begin with, giving better amps/yield;
3. Of course up to 5 KW of array at high voltage; this can be further optimized with up to 20 panels (250W @ 37 VoC each in a 10S2P config, for example) on just one inverter as I look to grow with it if its durability holds well.

Then there are other things mainly found in the GK series, especially the 5 KW model:
1. Support for Batteryless operation. (I consider this a major factor) ;
2. Detachable display/control panel - for wired remote operation up to 30m(?) away, IIRC;
3. Direct supply to load, even when battery is present; that way one bypasses the inefficiency associated with having to pass power through the battery first to the load even when sufficient solar/grid power is available to directly supply the load; (I don't think this is unique to the GK.)
4. BMS interface is already built in for Lithium batteries;
5. Bluetooth is built in;
6. WiFi interface is built in, although the WiFi Card itself is optional component, which I bought;
6. Latest technology & design from the Voltronic/MPP Solar stable, etc.

...

Cool am sticking with getting the GK series then, please I will be interested in how you finally did your setup:
The wire size and distance to CC, DC breaker specs, other accessories used and how they are connected

duwdu:

The main disadvantage I see with the 5 KW GK is that units cannot be parralled. They have to be used separately.

Hope those help a little.

........
P34c3
.....
...

This is fine by me, I don't think I would need that extension. The up to 4kw in the 3kva of the GK is already more than sufficient for me.

Thanks

In a 3 phase star connected winding (which is what your transformer is), if the neutral terminal were to become ungrounded the neutral will rise with respect to the ground except the loading on the 3 phases is balanced.

The loading is never balanced thus you will find a voltage on it.

I am pressed from the sidelines to read the ugly comments of readers on other rooms regarding your posts and pricelist, perhaps the frequency of your post may have culminated to that.

Your frequent pasting on every page here too is worrisome and derisory to your image and accrued goodwill which is bad for your business. Many may feel you are desperate and implicitl have their judgement in dealing with you.

so finally got around to changing the plug on my repaired ''1 hp LG inverter ac''
seems its a 2hp compressor that was installed , though i wonder why or how, both compressors looked similar.
my people on gen mode it clocked btw 650 to 710w, after about 15mins operation, took it out from gen mode..it jumped to 1650w to 1710w!!!, and remained so for about 10mins...had to shut it down..would continue further testing later, i knew something was wrong after the repairs, but the superior cooling after the repairs made me complacent as it normallyranged btw 11% to 17% on my 5kva inverter on normal mode, unlike now it clocks in from 25% to 31%

somebody shud pls confirm the wattage of his 1hp Lg inverter ac on normal and gen modes, as i intend buying another unit, but i don dey fear now
Are you sure it was properly refilled, assuming the compressor are same spec? They need to pull vacuum on the system, put in the correct weight of the refrigerant. If these are not observed the compressor will work at a different watt

Could I suggest a simpler and more elegant solution? since the item is too much even for interested parties to look at .

Put all items in an excel file with drop down to sort by category - The file may be easier for you to maintain and users to use( e.g. forward to friends, associated while recommending you as a supplier)

Either attach the file to post or store it on google drive/dropbox and only post with a link along with your contact deatils and promotional message

You can highlight only newly added itms or priceses dropped significantly ( say 20%) in the post to grab attention of users

yeah, try telling that to a naija technician, he will tell you how he has been doing this work b4 he was even born grin grin and all such nonsense. i refill car acs so i understand the tech, the lg tech refilled by ear, didnt pull vaccum, nor used a scale, am tired of the ac now. wish i had excess funds..would hv uninstalled it and bought a new unit, it reads 720w on gen mode..and 1500w on jet mode, this is a 1hp LG inverter ac

the trouble in this country of half baked technicians,
i know haier thermoccol have ventured into inverter acs, anybody using their units?... apart from LG N haierthermoccol..wch other inverter ac make is out there..that is reliable?

I don't want the 48v, my setup is 24v for now. It is supposed to replace the current 24v 1.5kva inverter that I currently use. The 3kva MK series is limited to 1500W irrespective of whether it's 24/48v

Cool am sticking with getting the GK series then, please I will be interested in how you finally did your setup:
The wire size and distance to CC, DC breaker specs, other accessories used and how they are connected

This is fine by me, I don't think I would need that extension. The up to 4kw in the 3kva of the GK is already more than sufficient for me.

Thanks

Now waiting patiently for my 3Kva GK Series to arrive

Please who has a contact for local suppliers of AC relays and contactors (electro-mechanical coils please not SSRs) - I have a personal home improvement project in hand and I cannot afford to wait the 2 weeks to receive foreign imports from Amazon or AliExpress.
Any particular reason for avoiding SSRs? Just got a few for heating purposes.

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by NiyiOmoIyunade(m): 10:53pm On Feb 25, 2019
The SSRs are a bit more failure prone and you will need to mount them on an heat sink and sometimes add a fan too - the heavier the load demands on the SSR, the hotter it runs in general. All these limits and you will still pay a premium for it.

The electro-mechanical relays do not need any external cooling and the versions I have used switch within 10ms (faster than your average inverter) the only big minus for me is that loud thud when the coil engages and switches the contacts ON/OFF - the noise always startles my Madam and makes her nearly jump out of her seat grin

I recently installed a 1.5Kva Luminous Solar Hybrid Inverter with 2 220ah Luminous Flooded Inverlast batteries. The load on the inverter is roughly 10 5Watt LED bulbs, 2 70w fans and a 32 inch LED TV with GoTV decoder.

I want to add some solar panels and I have several questions:

1) What Solar panels do you recommend with PROVEN high production efficiencies? I read of Flames, Suntech, Canadian Solar, Yingli, etc. etc.

2) The Luminous Solar Hybrid has an in-built CC of 40a. Does anyone have experience with this inverter? Should I still buy a separate MPPT for the solar setup or use the inbuilt?

3) I read about the importance of equalizing batteries. How often should I do this for my batteries, what charger should I use and for how long?

Thanks.
