Boeing is going to update the control software on the 737 MAX — The plane that's crashed twice since October.

◾The Boeing 737 MAX will receive updated flight control software in the coming weeks.

◾The software announcement comes four months after the crash Lion AirFlight JT610 and two days after the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302. Both of which involved effectively brand new Boeing 737 MAX eight airliners.

◾The update will change the way the plane's MCAS control software reacts to faulty sensor readings.

◾Boeing expects the FAA to make the update mandatory.

The Boeing 737 MAX will be receiving updated flight control software, the airplane maker announced on Tuesday. The software announcement comes four months after the crash Lion Air Flight JT610 and two days after the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302. Both of which involved effectively brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 airliners.

In a statement, Boeing said:

"For the past several months and in the aftermath of Lion Air Flight 610, Boeing has been developing a flight control software enhancement for the 737 MAX, designed to make an already safe aircraft even safer. This includes updates to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) flight control law, pilot displays, operation manuals, and crew training. The enhanced flight control law incorporates angle of attack (AOA) inputs, limits stabilizer trim commands in response to an erroneous angle of attack reading, and provides a limit to the stabilizer command in order to retain elevator authority."

The Chicago-based aviation giant said that update will be implemented across the 737 MAX fleet in the coming weeks.

Boeing expects the US Federal Aviation Administration to issue an Airworthiness Directive "no later than" April to mandating the updated software.

The company has not indicated it will make physical changes to the aircraft that has been in service last spring.

At the heart of the controversy surrounding the 737 MAX is MCAS or the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation system. To fit the MAX's larger, more fuel-efficient engines, Boeing had to redesign the way it mounts engines on the 737. This change disrupted the plane's center of gravity and caused the MAX to have a tendency to tip its nose upward during flight, increasing the likelihood of a stall. MCAS is designed to automatically counteract that tendency and point the nose of the plane downward.

Unfortunately, initial reports from the Lion Air investigation indicate that a faulty sensor reading may have triggered MCAS shortly after the flight took off.

Software's by it's very nature, can always go wrong..... Why they altered the orientation of the aeroplanes engine placement, is truly terrifying and would be blamed for all crashes that ever occurs again .......

It puts a chill on frequent flyers minds...... Make man just ensure for each trip, travel insurance is always arranged..... At least if i die, i no die for nothing............. cheesy

I hope it solves the issue.

As a rule, I don't rush to buy latest products. I want to see how it serves first buyers and until I get good reviews, I don't buy.

I remember when a friend bought the 2005 Toyota Camry (muscle) that had brake issues.

Yen yen yen.

These idiots knew their plane has a fault which makes the plane to nosedive. They didn't inform the pilots n instruct them how to handle the issue. They didn't tell the public that the planes are flying coffin. But now that every airline has banned their carton, they want to update.

But why do I feel there is an impending crash on one of those Air Peace planes? That airline is a horror show.

They will delay your flight by 8 hours n your one hour flight is actually a special prayer session because they will ensure they properly traumatize u. And the end, you will just ask yourself, "why didn't I just take Ekene Motors?"

If I have the means, I will never allow that stupid airline fly over my house let alone board one.

Just like in drugs, these new "inventions" are tested on humans, fellow humans.

humans have always dominated their fellow humans to their injury since time immemorial

update the software and still test-run it on another set of unsuspecting people till you get it right

Its always been so.... cry

They shouldn't have made the engines bigger in such a way that would even alter the planes center of gravity. Even with an updated software i still sense trouble for the 737-max airplanes.

There is no reason a brandnew airplane should have such a fatal error unexpectedly.

They need to be sure of the exact reason or cause for this. They now have two cases to compare with even though sadly.

Well known companies give out their products to people for reviews. So if a well known MB freak is interested, they give out the product without charge for his review.

Handling the lives of passenger on software is somewhat disturbing... Pilots also need re orientation on how to master use of those software and devices, they should be able to manipulate the system when things go wrong

God is forever great, for many decades, control engineers were unable to mimic the control action of a single fly let alone a bird.

From optimal control to adaptive control to robust control to Model Predictive Control all seems abortive.

As control engineers, knowing what might go wrong at any time, it makes us scary to fly this bird. At times ignorance is a blessing.

I can tell you that the CEO of Boeing will not fly Max 8.

America is such an hypocritical nation. Is it not shocking that a country that will normally be the first to have grounded the plane model hasn't because it is an American product? Whether the model is updated or not, most countries will never use the model again because there is no guarantee that the software update will prevent another crash. America the hypocritical nation!
its all about business. Imagine if it was a chinese product. Cnn no go let us rest

I saw YouTube video of 787 max 8. I was awestruck how versatile the plane is, it can fly almost vertical, swing from side to side like helicopter. Max 8 is new generation of commercial airplane, that's why demand for it is high. Pilots need to retrain because technology is becoming more complex

This is the same plane American/European Airliners are using even after the disaster that happened to Ethiopian airlines on Sunday...these operators Neva grounded their plane"They said there is nothing wrong with Boeing 737 max, that d manufacturer itself represent safety". Even after the incident these airline operators in the united states and Europe are still making use of the plane. Am not an aviation expert but my take on this matter is that Boeing needs to issue out the plane's manual and train the pilots of these airlines/airliner who ordered for this planes coz the causes of this accident is associated with human error tracking it back to the same accident involving Lion air in October 2018 cox it really looks like the Boeing 737 max is sophisticated when compared to other models of planes such as Airbus or Russian/Soviet made planes(Tupolev & Ilyushin)
