Goel: As I said first hand experience. I know no navy has ever found one of our subs in war games. But just tge general feel I get about them has me think they would not find a Pakistan Submarine if one got to sea. Unrelated, Pakistan subs where meant to be south african |

andrewza: Generally subs r very difficult to locate once they arrive at the high seas. Best option is to trail them from their base , which again is tough ask. Best option is employing multiple assets and hope for the best Some info which I wrote long time back in response to a query regarding additional assets sensors in addition to surface / sub surface sonars or aerially deployed sonobouys which r needed for localisation of a hostile sub. 1.MAD magnetic anomaly detector it detects localized changes in earths magnetic field due to presence of submarines ferromagnetic materials and even non ferromagnetic materials. however MAD is used for target localization not target detection. 2.hydro carbon sensor to detect fuel vapors from diesel submarines. even some AIP systems in subs uses scrubbers to remove the fumes before release however depending on the sensitivity of the hydro carbon sensor the byproducts like co2 and other gases can be detected. 3.LIDAR light ranging and detection technology they r specially useful for detecting objects in shallow water but presently it is not capable of large volume searches. however research is going on. LIDAR is very successful in mine hunting systems though. 4.satellites in LEO orbits using SAR or EO payloads can detect the submarine surface wake , submerged submarine trail, underseas wave variations , localized temperature variations etc 5.SQUIDS superconducting quantum interference device that exploits the debye effect ie magnetic signature produced by a submarines wake. a debye detector can detect a submarine trail from a large distance and follow it to localize the sub. 6.underwater acoustic sensors or fiber optic acoustic sensors , these act as trip wires to passing submarines eg. SOSUS 7.airborne EO sensors can detect the submarine periscopes from a considerable distance. 8.airborne radar especially AESA based radars with SAR iSAR modes can detect submarine periscopes from a considerable distance. Only the Americans have most of the above technologies deployed. 1 Like |

SternProphet:I'm not even refering to that, I believe the maintenance guys would have already gotten use to the constant cleaning and checks(that one na dole). The threat of a brown out on landing or takeoff is worrisome even more than the enemies(BHT) arsenal especially during harmattan in North where even sneezing sef can trigger a volcanic dust. This brown out of a thing can even make mess of an experience Pilot with over 10,000flight hours, when it comes that sabiness is out of the equation. 1 Like |

SerikinGamo:Being in Navy doesn't impart the experience of one in military engineering services or a strategist. A reason why common soldiers aren't made defense ministers. andrewza:1. SA doesn't have so much naval engagements unlike great powers. 2. SAis irrelevant to our discussion. Submarines planned to be sold to SA being sold to Pakistan doesn't make anything stealth. 1 Like |

andrewza: Yes but it ain't that simple though, depends on the tactics. Eg if I sanitize the airspace of hostile air assets off loading target data etc over my area of operations and also deny comms , then the submarine cannot use his stand off ASHMs against my ships, he will then be forced to seek my ships within range of his own onboard sensors and in return within the range of my ASW assets like SSK , ASW ships which will be part of my outer defence perimeter . Then things will become more interesting....... 1 Like |

Goel: Defense ministers are political figures and know nothing of Planing or any thing about the Miltary. They rely on Miltary officials to advise them on these issues My experience with Indian navy is first hand. We do a annual exersize with India. When it comes to the corvet side of naval operation south africa has a lot of war time experience 3 Likes |

nemesis8u:this was built around the idea of a Indian attempted blockade of Pakistan. Meaning a edge to Pakistan airforce in keeping the skies clear. With a Pakistan sub threatening or luring the Indian forces away. This is not to say India can't raid the Pakistan coast like they have done in the past. |

andrewza: Sir u r a old poster here and yet u made the mistake of thinking I was speaking about the 2 countries. I rarely give country or weapon specific views since it is a futile attempt due to absence of critical information on assets and operational capabilities and doctrines of the said countries or said weapons. The example which I gave was a generalized tactical ops applicable to any navy anywhere in the world. It was not country specific. |

Geronimoe:No need to be ashamed bro, our soldiers are doing great with the training and equipment they get, Chadian Troops or not we’ve held on to our territory the last few years, what’s the point of a multinational join take force if we can’t conduct cross border operations ? Cameroonian soldiers have been operating in Nigeria for months and vise versa but we don’t hear noise in the media but as soon as chad is involved we wont hear word, abeg allow us rest jor. Nigerians soldiers are brave and capable, the problem is leadership. By the way I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here compare chad to Nigeria, there’s no basis for that, lets not get things twisted. 2 Likes |

jakeporeshenko:Oga that's your opinion. I've no qualms about that. If you want to keep praising mediocrity(the bane of the Nigerian society) when obviously there are big shortcomings, I also have no qualms about that. "By the way I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here compare chad to Nigeria", are you saying this for the sake of argument or you are serious, because I'm very sure you are not new here. Chad, Cameroun, Niger, countries that you want to thump your chest to them and always say we are the giant of Africa. 1 Like |
