Femi Falana in an article on Sunday, titled, “INEC’s fresh power to deregister political parties", stated that only 10 parties will survive deregistration by INEC. 

According to Femi Falana, if INEC followed the constitutional provisions on deregistration of political parties, not more than 10 of the 91 political parties would survive based on their performances in the just-concluded general elections. The renowned lawyer and activist cited the May 2017 amendment to Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution, which empowered INEC to deregister any political party on the grounds of “(a) breach of any of the requirements for registration; (b)failure to win at least 25 per cent of votes cast in: (i) One state of the federation in a presidential election; or (ii) one local government of the state in a governorship election; (c) failure to win at least – (i) one ward in the chairmanship election; (ii) one seat in the national or state House of Assembly election; or (iii) one seat in the councillorship election.”

He further added; “From the foregoing, it is indubitably clear that INEC has been conferred with enormous powers to deregister political parties that fail to meet the fresh constitutional prerequisites.“Going by the results of the 2019 general elections, the 91 registered political parties may have been reduced to less than 10 that may have scaled the constitutional hurdle.”

And then you will hear "20 presidential candidates endorse Buhari". Again you will hear association of former aspirants. Win their own polling units they cannot. The other day Oby Ezekwesili stepped down and her party asked her to refund all the money given to her which largely included monies sourced personally by her. How much were they talking about? 49 million. While APC and PDP were talking about billions one corner side party was crying over 49 million. Clearly what what the politicians do is register the parties and keep them for decamping if aggrieved in the future just like Okorocha and AA. The politicians register parties also just to collect funds from government for elections and share. Please INEC do not delay, deregister them all.

I've been thinking of this, never know there's a provision in the Constitution that empower inec to deregister 90% of these mushroon political parties.

Why can't INEC just cut it down to two, A two party system with the option of independence is good just like in the US. Politics should be done through ideological inclination and not ethnical inclination. Just leave the whole thing to APC, PDP and one party that serves as intermediary between the two of them. This will breed new ground for political brilliance and not the joke of politics and leaders we at the moment.

Make it 12 so that each the 36 states can have an option of choosing 3 each.

Don't be ignorant. America has more than 5 national parties. Just that Democrat and Republican are the dominant and visible of them all. 10 is okay for Nigeria.

I guess we can all agree on this issue. These mushroom parties are responsible for wasting time during collation and also costly election materials while not providing any meaningful alternative to PDP and APC. Any party that does not have national presence should be scrapped.

If inec dereregisters them,they will register again with anew name that is the only way they know to scam people to survive
