From October last season Liverpool defence has been solid and were not conceding a lot even before they bought VVD
When you watch Liverpool very little chances get beyond the midfield that is why Matip can hold the defence without much to do

Between 2013 and 2015 Boateng was one of the top 3 defenders in the world. Yet no one ever told us that he is the greatest German defender ever unlike VVD we are hearing he is the best Dutch player ever, best ever EPL defender and greater than Maldini

In terms of CBs Baresi was the best i ever saw, better than Maldini who was great himself.

Beckenbauer was before my time but he is the acclaimed no 1 amongst all defenders. From tapes i would suggest Baresi just edges it in terms of just pure defending while Beckenbauer who was a wonderful man marker himself was also better in terms of his vision, ability on the ball, and elegance.

They were both complete so you can't go wrong with either. My personal favourite was Baresi because he was the Michael Jordan of defenders when i was a kid.

Maldini doesn't come close to Baresi for me, the latter was a proper leader in defence.. the fulcrum of those great Italian and Milan backlines. As good as a left back/centre-back Maldini was, he wasn't a force like Baresi.
For me only someone like Beckenbauer can surpass him and even then as a pure centre back, I think Baresi is unrivalled in terms of his stature in the game. His exploits at both club level and international level is superb.
Mixture of an elite ball playing sweeper, rock hard defender, very athletic and incomparable leadership and organisational skills. You'll never see someone with all these components.

Yeah Baggio's thigh was wrapped up. A fit Baggio and Italy might have stolen it, cos with the way Baresi played Italy was not going to concede even if they played 5 hours.

Arrigo Sacchi went defensive and Signori suffered for it. Also generally his international career suffered from him playing in the same era as Baggio. Del Piero and Totti in a later period caused a similar problem for managers.
