before you compare a player, you use a player with almost equal achievements. Then you make case for the superior player that has an edge in the head to head battle.

e.g if you want to compare any player with messi, that players must have close or atleast equal number of goals, personal achievements and trophies as messi. thats why it makes sense to compare ronaldo and messi.
no player in this era has achieved number of goals, personal achievements and trophies as those two.
