I agree with you. She of course sound pained probably due to harsh criticism but she is right. She is the custodian of that child and bears all the burdens, so she has earned the right to change that child's name. People tend to be traditional or customary in thinking.
The only cavet there is that she should be doing that out of good intentions not revenge.
