Has anyone tried applying to a loan from Prodigy Finance of recent like this April? because they have rejected over 10 people that I know that have applied including me. Maybe they are now short of funds.

U need to rethink this loan thing since you have not yet made a commitment.

It usually looks like free money in the beginning but d consequences r crazy.

U will hear some people say they have been paying $600 every month for d past 5 years n when they go to their loan company to check how much is remaining, d company tells that they r still paying d INTEREST on d loan, n they haven't even started paying the principal after 5 years. Those companies want u to be in debt for life so u can keep working for them.

If u default on d loan after u started working (if u get a job after graduation), they can seize ALL of your properties.

U can't declare bankruptcy with student loan but if you gamble all your money at a casino n lost, u can declare bankruptcy d next day.

If u want to buy a car, gather your $3000 n buy a 12 year old car. But some people prefer to buy d latest car n keep paying $150 every two weeks over 8 years. To them, paying $150 to be handed d keys looks a lot cheaper than paying $3000 cash down.

Same thing with credit card companies. These ones Na d real cartel. They keep telling u they hv increased your credit limit, n u can pay anytime but they never ever want u to finish paying for it. They longer u stay, d more they milk u.

If u can't pay cash for something, it means u can't afford it. If you can't afford something, go home.


That aside.
I believe u can secure funding with your electrical n computer engineering aspirations.

Loan is not necessarily a bad thing, some people r in very tight situations n just need d money. But u r not in that situation yet.

If u must take a loan, find a very cheap school. Reason why community colleges r getting more popular cos of lower fees.

Do you mean this time last year or this year? The last person i know that got applied in march, By the way I'm at the very first stage before the uploading of any documents. I even called them and they said they don't give reasons for the rejection. I don't know any Nigerian(for STEM courses) that has tried it this month that got it. Irrespective of the schools. Top schools that are among their listed schools. You can try creating an application and see, takes less than 3 minutes to create a dummy application, no need to upload anything.

1. I mean 2 weeks ago. The person that got ($45,000 approved) was admitted by a top 25 MBA program in the US

2. There is an algorthm that decides whether you qualify for a loan, and the amount of loan prodigy can provide. It depends on several things like the school, the course, your country, your current debt (very important), and future earning potential (e.g if you've secured a job offer after your programme).

3. Also note that there is a minimum amount of loan that can be approved by prodigy. Say for instance the minimum limit is $10,000 for that school, and you apply for $10,000, and the algorithm only approves 50% of your request ($5,000), you will fall below the minimum and your loan wont be approved.

My advice:
1. If you really need the loan, conduct proper research on the prodigy website for that school and that course and know what the eligibility criteria is (believe me, it differs for every school)

2. Tweak your profile using the factors I listed above for subsequent applications till you get an approval. That way, it points you in the right direction to know what the reason for the refusal is. For instance, you can include you've secured a job after your masters and it pays about $60,000 a year (doesn't matter if it's TRUE or not)

3. If you eventually get an approval, heres the catch, to secure the loan finally, you will have to provide evidence of all the critical information you provided.

4. Finally, you can try Mpower, they are the next best option, but chances of approval with them are even lower than prodigy (from my experience)

Aside from that, most nigerian students are stuck with prodigy or mpower as viable options

there is stilt.com but they have some restrictions. Have you tried other funding/scholarship alternatives in your school? 3rd party funders? Church? (If you are a Christian and have some influencers in your church) etc. Exhaust all your options as loans should be your final resort.

Also, although people don’t want to think about this but there is always next year too in which you can look for schools that provide funding/ tweak your profile to be more competitive for funding/assistantship opportunities.

Whatever option you take, be it loans or otherwise, I wish you the very best and I hope it all spans out well.

I applied and was approved on Prodigy and the whole process took just 2 weeks too. They have a credit model like you said earlier, once you put in those details, it predicts if you can take the loan or not. It even predicts the amount you can take and it won't be a burden to you.

So I had my interview today for 6:30am. After reading on Nairaland how the VOs resume to work much later and my Uber guy saying the VOs don’t resume till 7am or 8am, I just felt relaxed. I arrived by 7am thereabout. I was getting worried as two youths I asked were on B1/B2 so I became anxious that my lateness may pose a problem to me. Well as I was carrying out my screening and biometrics, I just dey see coded blue paper issuance to people. I wasn’t that bothered although I was somewhat tensed tho. I read a lot about composure on this forum so I maned up. It got to my turn and the following exchange took place:
The VO was an American guy in black suit( can’t remember the window)
VO: Good morning
Me: Good Morning( we exchanged pleasantries well)
VO: where are you going to?
Me: I am going to National University, San Diego, California to Study the Master of Public Health with a concentration in HealthCare Administration, starting with the English language learning. I will be working with Joseph Lanctot, Chair of the National University Planetree committee on community-wide volunteer opportunities(vo cuts in)
VO: why National University? (I think I asked him to say again, not sure tho. He repeats the question)
Me: (paused for a mini sec) The school of health and human services is currently successful in an ongoing research project specifically in the area I am most interested in, that is the Person-centered care model of health treatment. This has made National University the first academic institution in the world to pursue and achieve the planetree recognition. It seems you were warned about this school before you went for the visa interview, but it seems like you had already booked the interview before you knew it is in one of the "hard schools to get visa" group. Also, you did not take any of GRE or TOEFL showing that you wanted to take shortcuts in everything.

Anyways ...

I sincerely think you should have an idea of what you want to be in the future. I always encourage people to have this idea in mind. Telling people to select a course for you shows you have no idea of what you want to become. This is not a very good situation.

What do you want to be in 5 years from now?

The answer to this question will guide you to choose the course that leads you to that direction. Don't be scared of choosing a "non-marketable" course. People have gotten visas for it and you will - if you do the right thing. If people end up choosing a course and you start studying it in the US, it might get to a point where you will find a mismatch between your dream and your current course of study and then you will start looking for a career switch, which will end up wasting your time. So, it is best you know what you want to do and have a game plan ready.

But then, you need to start with taking the GRE and TOEFL before selecting a good school for you.

I can see lack of home tie. Although, our guru can look at it if am wrong. Your uncle in California and you going to California too with no wife and children in Nigeria. I think that is why. your answer to the why National University is not bad.

Undergraduate Course Chemistry

Intended Major (Masters) : Chemistry or Material science.

I aimed UVM Chemistry initially, to meet up with their deadline, I wrote the GRE when I knew I wasn't fully prepare (5 weeks of preparation), unfortunately for me, I was not selected. Though they didn't complain about my scores, but I know that my Q.R is not good enough.

I'm planning to retake the GRE by May. Is it advisable for me to use my present scores to seek admission in schools where GRE scores are not ordinarily required e.g Illinois state University? Or should I wait till I retake the exam before I apply to any school I want to apply to. I'm targeting Spring 2020 admission and I want to spread my tentacles as wide as possible.

I think that factor depends on the discretion of the interviewing VO because an Uncle cannot petition an immigrant VISA for a nephew, knowing the consequences that comes with becoming out of status. I may be wrong tho. Thanks anyways.
