I have noticed that Regular Kenya Army units in Somalia are ditching their M4s and G3s in favor of the AK, I don't know if its because the enemy has the extra magazines tha KDF intend to use when they run out grin or the the other rifles jam easily and are difficult to fix at the battle front.

That's news to me! The KDH have a history of almost 60 years operating The G3 AND FN in similar environment of the Shifta war just after independence.

It was hard to fathom too but recent pics coming from Somalia (especially the camp in Dhobley ) I just noticed lots of AKs , This was a first time for me seeing KDF with AKs, The only other time I've seen that is with recruit training ...
I had the privilege of watching an army unit train once, and I remember them saying the G3 is as reliable as the AK, but some guys said the recoil took some getting used to... however I did notice that it took them a second to reload a magazine and I remember thinking in a real life scenario where seconds could be the differentce between life and death , those seconds matter .... Plus, the AK is much lighter you could practically shoot it with one hand ...

Or maybe they are in somalia under a UN ou african Nation mission , who is responsible for the supply of arms and ammunition for all troops . and they choose the AK . dont think kenyan army will use its own budget and weapons .

All very interesting! I was shocked when the KDF abandoned the G3s and FNs for the M4 some years back just when the US was srsly debating continuing with the 5.56mm. Fyi,many have complained about its lack of power.

The U.S. Army's chief of staff told Congress the M4 Carbine's 5.56mm round can't penetrate modern enemy body armor plates and believes Infantry units need a more powerful rifle than the M4.

Gen. Mark Milley testified to the Senate Armed Services Committee that the service's current M855A1 Enhanced Performance Round will not defeat enemy body armor plates similar to the U.S. military-issue rifle plates such as the Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert, or ESAPI.
https://www.military.com/kitup/2017/05/modern-enemy-body-armor.html

Also the 7.62 NATO is a very heavy hitter capable of laying out the enemy flat up to 600 m with one good hit. The 5.56 mm won't manage half that power and penetration at 300 m. IIRC,it was considered too small for gazelles when hunting was still legal in Kenya.

Dont take what Generals say to congress seriously, they go there to ask for money. To get money they say their equipment is bad.

An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h in 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with Tempo Mach 2 appears.
The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus flight, boring flight isn’t it? Take care and have a look here!”

He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, only to swoop down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks, "Well, how was that?"

The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but now have a look here!"

The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly stubbornly straight, with the same speed. After five minutes, the Airbus pilot radioed, "Well, what are you saying now?"

The jet pilot asks confused: "What did you do?" The other laughs and says, "I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back of the flight to the bathroom, got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon cake and made an appointment with the stewardess for the next three nights - in a 5 Star hotel, which is paid for by my employer. "

The moral of the story is:
When you are young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, comfort and peace are not to be despised either.

No.There is a genuine lack of killing power with the 5.56 mm. Even the SAS who like all specops kill at much shorter range than ordinary infantry have complained.

after they condemned a ‘shoot-to-wound’ policy that put their lives at risk.

The elite troops will now use bigger, heavier rounds to overcome Islamic insurgents who are determined to fight to the death.

The bullets upgrade – and a new range of rifles designed to fire them – were recommended in a top-secret report on SAS operations in Afghanistan. It called for a return to a ‘shoot-to-kill’ policy and for heavier rounds to be issued to troops. The report’s authors described bloody clashes with Taliban jihadists who managed to ignore their bullet wounds and carry on shooting.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2294631/SAS-use-bigger-bullets-kill-enemy-outright-claiming-shoot-wound-policy-lives-risk.html

‘But this backfired against the Taliban. The 5.56 mm rounds did not take a big enough chunk out of them, allowing fanatical insurgents to keep on fighting despite their wounds. As a result, more SAS soldiers were shot and badly wounded.

‘The need for a heavier round was highlighted in the regiment’s post-Afghanistan report. Tests are now taking place on at least three rifles specially designed to fire the 7.62 mm rounds.

‘The difference in killing power between 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm is startling – the heavier rounds pack so much more of a punch.’

Funny enough here are our RSF and specops use the SCAR H while the infantry used the M4 and now also the AK-DAH FUQ?!

Contract for a new Kenya Navy Shipyard given to a Dutch company.... The shipyard will also be used to built cargo ships for the newly revived KSL- Kenya Shipping Line.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo termed the project a game-changer for the maritime industry, saying it was timely as it is being implemented at a time the government is keen on harnessing the blue economy potential.
"I have full confidence in what Damen (contractor) will undertake and I hope they will keep to the timelines to have the project ready by 2021," the CS said during the launch at the Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe Dockyard-Mkunguni.

7.62 was abandoned for a reason and 5.45 and 5.56 adopted for a reason.

"MUH STOPPING POWA" is a meme. 5.45 and 5.56 has a yawing effect, which results in bigger wound cavities than 7.62 it equally has a biger chance of fragmentation than 7.62. Equally is the "muh energy muh penetration" is a meme the US military has M995 AP rounds that shatter ceramic armor and pen steel/aluminum armor, a new tungsten variant of M995 has been issued a few years back as well. Range is irrelevant as both rounds have a simular trajectory over 700m, US SOCOM actually gave up 7.62 SCAR rifles almost as soon as they were adopted.

Anyway, the argument is semantic. 6.8 grendel has been selected for the US militarys future weapons as it has the benefits of 5.45/5.56 and the range of 7.62

I am not sure if any of the 3 to 6 C27 J that Kenya ordered arrived in Kenya yet, but from the tweet by UN dept in-charge of responding to Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, They must have confused the C27-J with C130.

Dailymail offices are chuck-full of morons.

5.56mm is probably the most battle tested round in history. Killing is 30% ammo and 70% shot placement. That big 7.62mm round does nothing if it flies by my head. I suspect most people in the "5.56 is too small" club had never ran a 2.4 with a loaded battle jacket.
Biggest problem is the stupid adherence to the Hague convention regarding ammo types. I can shoot you with a 20mm HE round, but God forbid I use a expanding .22 bullet !
Ammo has been improved so much over the years that its actually legal to hunt deer with 5.56 in some US states.

The lower recoil of the 5.56 / 5.45 is an advantage for most users and leads to better shooting results. Not to forget the lower weight and therefore more ammo an solider can carry in the field. You think the 7.62x39 is cheap as dirt? But fact is the 5.45x39 is even cheaper.
