so the government feels that someone in the CJN's category shouldn't have such amount in his account? shocked The whole money is less than N50m.couldnt he have legitimately made N50m all the years in service? It's understandable he erred to not have declared. Banning him for 10years and taking his money is a witch-hunt

You're not getting it still?

It's not the amount of money in the said accounts, it's the shadiness surrounding the non-declaration as at the time of taking office.

The law is the law. It is an ass (donkey), so silly, yet so useful. We would rather not have it another way.

He was given the opportunity to declare the source of the funds but he couldn't that's why he's asked to forfeit them

But we were made to believe initially that he has more than a billion in his account, Onnoghen shot himself in the leg ,what Buhari and his men are planting will germinate to hunt them one day with their generations

This man should be sent to jail. Tribunal failed to do so. The NJC recommended his sack shows he's guilty. I don't believe road side conspiracy theories that he's been removed because of election.
There is a difference between a sack and retirement, as you mean it and as recommended by NJC.

The CCT and Buhari did not follow the law here. The law applies to the Presidency first as prosecution before the citizen.

The judiciary must be completely sanitized of the corrupt element existing within the system. This will serve as a deterrent to other corrupt judges

Let judgement begin from the house of God abi! no problem, another king will soon arrive who will not know the house of Joseph. You people should be complaining when tides turn una hear?

IMO, it will not be a witchhunt, if after himself, others who are found to not be guilt of the same offence. But we all know that's not the case. and that it doesn't take much looking, to find more guilty people who the current administration canvasses as saints. Nothing has become of Burutai's 444 millions contract to his girlfriend, nothing has become of Ganduje's dollar gate, nothing has happened to Maina, Nothing happened to Kemi Adeosun, nothing has yet happened to Amaechi.

So we all know this fly needs to be removed from office. Atiku's appeals might have caused more problems, if he was still the CJN. There's no problem though. Na so the country be so ba a h wahala.

All the lawyers that took the decision to defend the former CJN at the early stages failed to advise him properly. The man could have entered a plea bargain with the FG and negotiate a honourable retirement, conscious that he was guilty. Then the President exploited a lacuna in the constitution (that is diabolically silent on how to/who can suspend a Chief Justice of the Federation) and axed him.

Our Senate (apparently also useless in this matter), could not meet to quickly address the judicial coup Buhari carried out and reverse the suspension, calling for due process. Then an agency under the Presidency tried the CJN, not unexpectedly convicting him.

Nigeria, as is currently, is flawed. Our constitution is weak. The system is rotten. Why would a judicial agency like the CCT be under the Presidency? Why would the President usurp the powers of the NJC to axe the CJN? Why is the Senate surreptitiously silent? When Justice Onnoghen's integrity was questioned, why did it take him more than three months before he resigned?

It is not to cast aspersions; Justice Onnoghen was wrong to have failed to properly declare his assets. He was even wronger to have said he forgot, and President Buhari erred in the approach in removing him. That said, why would the NJC extend the retirement age of Justice Tanko Mohammed? Is it likely because they next in line (Justice Rhodes-Vivour) is from the south?

At times like this, I miss Gani Fawehinmi and Fela. By now, they would have put fire under Buhari's nyansh.

No matter our criticisms, sentiments or whatever aspersions we desire to cast on the Code of Conduct Tribunal, the deed had been done. But it is utterly regrettable that many of us overlook the jungle justice being meted out to those lynched in public for stealing as little as loaf of bread whereas we become sentimental over a highly placed individual found guilty of irregularities and offences found to have amounted to misconduct punishable under the supreme and enabling law, the Constitution. Many of us are the reasons why the country remain underdeveloped, not really those in power. Our country has a long way to go with this kind of attitude. Quite unfortunate.
I am highly adverse to all forms of corruption, that was why I campaigned vigorously against Jonathan, I am not a sentimental person at all. Having said that, if N50 million is all they can find undeclared in Onnohen's accounts, then Onnoghen is a saint by Nigerian standards. Ordinary local government chairmen has far more than that in their accounts. Most judges have billions in their accounts - both declared and undeclared. Agreed Onnoghen engaged in some unethical practices, like receiving gifts from lawyers he have or had cases with. Those should be ethical and professional issues to be handled by NJC.

We have had outright evidence of graft and corruption in this dispensation, but because the person involved was either close to the president, from the presidents section of the country or from the presidents party nothing was done. Till today, nothing was done concerning Babachir Lawal, Malami or the Maina fiasco.

One thing that still baffles me is that "what or why did he refused to declare all those properties in the first place if it was all legitimately accrued ?

Why did he refused to accept the truth & follow the UJN's order before everything got escalated ?

I think EFCC will probe this man, those properties/money might be less than 50m but hr must confess & state everything in details.

Those we thought that they will uphold the truth has laid it down flatly !!

How EFCC’s Report Forced Onnoghen’s Resignation

...In the dossier prepared by Ekele Iheanacho and Rotimi Oyedepo Iseoluwa, the EFCC catalogued various allegations against Onnoghen, raising questions over the legitimacy of $1,716,000 deposited, over time, into his domiciliary account at Standard Chartered Bank and monies found in other accounts.
