At it height in 2014 Boko Haram had as many as 30,000 active fighters. They needed that many to hold territory the size of Costa Rica. Holding territory meant to had to engage the might of the Nigerian army in a traditional conventional mode of fighting. According to the BBC, engaging the Nigerian army head on was a fight they could not hope to win. They lost so many men..by 2015 half their fighters had been killed, it's commanders targeted. The majority of their casualties came from artillery bombardment. Realizing their mistake they abandoned the idea of holding territory and have reverted back to their cowardly hit and run tactics. Today the group numbers less than 5,000 active fighters, but in 2014 they numbered 25-30k fighters. These are generally miscreants and youths who little or no training. They stood no chance. Most of them are in hell now screaming.
