Makes me wonder how dumb their commissioner of health is, instead of them to create more awareness they're wasting time and effort passing this senseless bill when there are already medical/technical solutions to support marriage between sickle cell carriers. Haven't they heard of CVS and other alternatives? SMH

And I'm planning to settle down with my girlfriend soon.
We are both at risk and we are considering doing prenatal diagnosis that may lead to abortion if we discover that the coming child is SS.

What's people's take on procedure like this?
The psychological effect and religious view.

Maybe I'll call this ignorance and poverty mentality.

For your information, there are ways of preventing this

PRENATAL DIAGNOSIS
IVF
BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT ETC
RANGES FROM 300K TO 4 MILLION NAIRA

I too know, you think legislators just pass bills without the input of practitioners?
Don't worry, when we get to the level of these procedures you just mentioned being affordable, Anambra will repeal the act.

The law sounds very stupidly asinine..
To those masturbating on my earlier post, it's a ridiculous law in 2019.
Shame our lawmakers are so dumb, and have no intention of passing laws to better the lives of their communities.
Perhaps the next law will be for people who have diabetes running in their families not to marry each other.
After all the cost of managing diabetes and its sequelae far outweighs that of sickle cell

Your decisions should be your decisions. Nobody should coerce you to make them.
Perhaps they may invest in public awareness on sickle cell disease, but that's all they should do. Keep people educated, so they can make informed decisions.
Such laws are retrogressive in nature. Only a matter of time before laws will be passed on those who have madness, epilepsy, and what not in their families.

If you're not interested in considering the option of abortion, there are always other options like IVF where before the egg is even implanted, you know the scores.
Sickle cell disease is just a disease like many chronic diseases. It can be managed. They shouldn't be stigmatized, and definitely not the carriers.
I understand the risks involved if 2 carriers marry each other, but that should be their own decision after going through the pros and the cons.
Do we say mature women in their late 30s and 40s shouldn't marry again because the risk of producing Down Syndrome babies is higher in them?
Useless laws like this can be applied to so many scenarios, and until it touches something that is dear to you before you realise it's a law that doesn't make sense in this 21st century.
The government should have no business on who you decide to take as a life partner.
If the laws of the land prohibits marriage between carriers of the disease, perhaps they can decide to cohabit and start having children like that. What has the law achieved then? They haven't broken any law as they've not married, but that still hasn't reduced the risk of having sicklers has it?

obembet:
The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill banning marriages involving people living with sickle cell anemia or incompatible genotypes.

The bill, sponsored by the member representing Anaocha II state constituency, Charles Ezeani and 15 others, seeks to eradicate sickle cell disease in the state by checkmating marriages among people with incompatible genotypes.

The law to be cited as Sickle Cell Disease Control and Eradication Repeal law, barred parents, guardians, traditional rulers or group of persons from giving out their children/wards in marriages without presentation of a certificate of verification by a qualified sickle cell expert of their genotypes.

It also provided that no religious body or marriage registry shall perform Holy Matrimony without first demanding and obtaining sickle cell disease prevention certificate from intending couples.

The law stated, “Anybody who contravenes the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N200,000 or imprisonment to a term of three years or both.”

The law when it becomes effective shall also put in place a monitoring committee to ensure compliance.

Speaking, the co-sponsor of the bill, Charles Ezeani, described the law as life-saving.

He said, “The development would put a stop to the notion that love is blind by ensuring that intending couples must present their genotype test before marriage.”

Ezeani commended the Speaker of the Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu and other members of the Assembly for being the first to pass such health enhancement bill into law in the country.

The National Coordinator of People Living with Sickle Cell Disease, APLSCD, Aisha Edwards, who was also at the assembly, thanked the lawmakers for enacting the law.

She said the law above other things bars all forms of discriminatory practices against carriers of the disease, both in employment and admission into schools.

If na that one sef e go better.
Is there a law saying one must even marry to have children?
What if 2 people with AS decide not to marry, but agree to have their children regardless of the outcome, and decide to cohabit in peace with each other?
How do you then apply the yeye law in this case?
They may even decide to have 10 children, where all may be AA or all SS. What has the law achieved in this instance?
Perhaps the law should be passed on everyone deciding to fvck whether married or single- don't fvck AS or SS if you're AA, AS, otherwise you've committed a criminal offence.

Have you come across a sickle cell sufferer? I truly doubt it. That's probably why you can write these essays.

My uncle buried not one but TWO of his children to the dreaded disease and that was after a life of unending trips to the hospital and watching writhing in agonizing pain while in crisis.

True, the law not solve the problem totally but it sends a strong message. In fact i would suggest that any couple that knowingly brings a child with SS into the world should be treated as case of manslaughter.
