Visa denied today.

VO- good morning why are you going to the US?
Me- I want to obtain a second bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
VO- What did you study at first?
Me- I studied petroleum Engineering.
VO- Why study Mechanical Engineering when they are both related?
Me- My time as a Petroleum Engineering student was totally unsatisfying so I intend to take a new path in Engineering field so as to become more suitable and relevant in a stable industry for tomorrow's work force.
VO- Why not go for your masters instead?
Me- I believe that the engineering system is substandard over here, so I intentd to start from the fundamental stage in a better school with good learning environment and great tools that can help me grow.
VO- how many schools did you apply for?
Me- 3 schools
VO- Name them
Me- Western Michigan University, Texas A & M in Austin Texas and LSU in Louisiana.
VO- who is sponsoring you?
Me- Since my dad died it has been my younger brother-sorry Elder brother who works in cheveron Nigeria limited Oil company that will be sponsoring me.
VO- Okay did you take any test?
Me- Yes mam I wrote GRE.
VO- Did the school tell you to write GRE?
Me- They said I should come with any proof to show that Nigeria is an English speaking country.
VO- I'm sorry your visa cannot be granted, you can apply again next time.
I've been sitting at the bus top with brown envelope like one who is depressed and looking for job.
I even forgot to tell the VO I found myself in a mechanical engineering firm. My sis has been on my neck becuas she thought that was the only thing I omitted.
Please house I need your advice.
If I want to apply again what and whatndo I pay for?
Do I go for my masters instead?
I'm confused and depressed. I feel like I'm the worst being on earth.  I have to admit petroleum engineer is far to mech engr. It is closer to chemical engr , polymer/textile engr or petrochemical Engineering.Infact,chemistry or chemicals science is also close. So it is clear that there is a course alignment issue. However,it is possible to get a VISA with a second Bachelor's.Though chances are few and far in between I have seen it on this thread. Now this is it: You have to write TOEFL/IELTS/PTE and SAT I can see you fell in love with mech engr probably from your Job. But this is the catch:You will have to give personalize experience to convince the VO.We have seen medical doctors graduate and then go and pursue Bachelor's degree in MUSIC because that's where there passion is.You will have to link your current job to how much passion you have for mechanical engr since university days you probably take a few courses in mech like strength of materials if I am correct and you love it.You can talk about what you love about structures from high school. I was initially denied by the school I picked (University of Missouri, Columbia). I wrote to the graduate coordinator and asked why I was denied they said my overall Gp was low, so I told them that on the school site it was said that the Gp would be based on the last two years. They said they would review my application again, and behold I was accepted.

The interview(Tuesday Lagos 7.45)
After My thumbprinting I turned to my left to wait for where to be directed to by the CGI because 5 windows were open. As I turned to wait for the CGI a female VO (Young lady, she was quite beautiful she should be in her mid twenties) directly opposite me just gestured with her hand that I should come forward, I was still arranging the other documents from my thumbprinting.
V.O: before I arrive pass me your I-20 ( I guess she saw the Ups envelope with me so she knew I was a student)
ME: okay am coming(while looking for it, she requested my passport since it was in my hand)
VO: Where are you going to (She started typing, I didn't hear her properly)
ME: I didn't get you ma (I moved my ear closer to the glass cos she was speaking Very fast)
VO: She repeated the question

VO: What are you going to study?
ME: Mechanical Engineering, sorry Master Mechanical Engineering (I handed her my I-20)(My program was actually Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering but only M.E was written on my I-20)

Immediately I called my uncle and explained what happened, he told me come immediately, went to the bank and Got his two fixed deposits of 10M and 15M plus his bank statement balance of 1.4M my fee requirement was 13.5M.
I called time2win and asked him if fixed deposit was a liquid fund because the Bank Manager said the F.D was Open Market, I said yes that F.D was accepted but he wasn't too sure if it was a liquid fund. I used it like that anyways submitting the documents the same day.
I was placed on A.P when I checked my status on Tuesday. This afternoon my status changed to ISSUED!

To the new guys seeking admission, please don't be discouraged, denial can be disheartening at times, try to ask why you where refused; all will be well. Maybe you should take time off and focus on writing the exam. At this point, you should be focus on the exam, yourself, making research on best schools to apply to. I was initially denied by the school I picked (University of Missouri, Columbia). I wrote to the graduate coordinator and asked why I was denied they said my overall Gp was low, so I told them that on the school site it was said that the Gp would be based on the last two years. Evening House...
Please, I need your wisdom, and possibly some help.
1. Initially, I got an admission offer without any funding. But I reached out to the school and told them, I don't see myself paying that much without any form of scholarship or waiver... The department insisted that their policy does not provide TA until the second semester, so there isn't much they can do until I complete the Teaching Apprenticeship in the first semester before qualifying for Assistantship in the second semester.
2. A few weeks later, the program coordinator mailed me, about a waiver they would be to apply for, it's basically a petition to the board of regents, to grant me the waiver to pay in-state tuition. I was asked to write a rationale, which I did, and some weeks later, I got the out-of-state tuition waiver.
3. Now the I-20 will show roughly $28k for the year.
4. Truth is, I can only afford to pay the first semester and living expenses. With the hope that the TA will come as promised in the second semester to take care of the tuition.
5. I am confused (more like disturbed greatly). Mainly because I have no means of showing proof of fund that much (I mean the $28k), secondly, what if the second-semester funding fail to come through? I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation where I won't be able to continue with my academics.
6. The waiver is for a whole year, which means my tuition is less than $6k per semester.
What would you advise?
The main issue is SOA.

Please Gurus in the house, help me scrutinize my propose transcript especially these key areas;
VO: Where are you going?
Me: I plan to pursue my Masters in Telecommunication and Networking Engineering at Florida International University
VO: Why FIU?
Me: It is an excellent school of technology, highly ranked in telecommunication while others school i applied to offer pure telecommunication, FIU offers double honor in telecommunication and networking but more importantly, the school curriculum aligns with my career goal and i got interested in papers written by Professor Xudong HE and Professor Geoffrey smith about IOT (Internet of things) which is the branch of telecommunication i’m really interested in
VO: Why Telecommunication Engineering?
Me: Telecommunication Engineering is a course i’ve always admired since my childhood, learning the principles of wireless communication is what have had great interest in and am more compelled now that ever with the introduction of IOT and it’s application to various industry which seem to be the new wave right now, FIU is the first school that offers IOT in undergraduate level
VO: How many schools did you apply to and name them?
Me: 4 schools, Florida International University Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Denver and George washington University
VO: How did you get to know about FIU?
Me: I did extensive research online on school that offers telecommunication and networking engineering, FIU happens to be my best fit as i got interested in the school program
VO: You finished high school your first degree 2011, what have you been doing since then?
Me: I went for my compulsory NYSC after which i got a job in xyz company in 2014 as telecoms field engineer. I work there till now
VO: What’s your plan after the program
Me: I plan coming back home to my present job in an elevated position and use the skills learnt to start my IOT company here in Nigeria

Hi friends
Firstly, I'm 24 and only have an OND, which i don't intend to use at all. What are my chances of getting a study permit as an undergraduate?
Must my sponsor be a family member?
How much does my sponsor need to have in account before i am considered?
Can i work to support my tuition if giving an admission?
Can i also change my course completely to a different department after the admissions?
Please assist |
