South Africa ~
Stats SA has published the latest quarterly GDP data, covering the first quarter of 2019, showing a larger contraction than expected.

The data shows that South Africa’s GDP declined by 3.2% in the first quarter – a much bigger drop than estimations of around a 1.6% decline.

The drop was mainly driven by declines in manufacturing and mining, the stats body said, with the final figure reflecting the largest quarterly drop in about 10 years.

The primary sector declined by 11.4% as agriculture recorded a 13.2% drop and mining declined by 10.8%. The secondary sector recorded a drop of 7.4% driven by declining manufacturing and electricity industries.

That is bad for south Africa

I believe Cyril ramaphosa can turn things around

God has blessed these west african country called Nigeria with abundant mineral resources but it a shame that we chose to ride on the back of oil only, therby ignoring other sectors like gas sector and minning sector but hope seems to have come as the federal government of nigeria has embarked on a journey to locate and discover new mineral in nigeria, and trust me it has been a success so far .

FG Discovers High Quality Platinum Mineral In Niger
By ADEMOKOYA TEMIDAYO - 2 months ago

The Federal Government say it has discovered high quality of platinum group elements in a village in Niger.

Alhaji Abubakar Bwari, the Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, announced this on Monday at the groundbreaking ceremony of AG Vision Mining Site in Suleja Local Government Area of the state.

Bwari said that the large mineral deposit was discovered at Kuchiko village in Suleja.

He added that the quality of the discovery was higher than that of South Africa, regarded as the highest deposit of the mineral in the world.

“A preliminary report by the company shows high deposit of minerals we are looking for.

“From what we have seen, the results are quite encouraging. The platinum group they have seen so far, the quality we have is higher than that of South Africa. And they are world largest producer of platinum group metal.

“That goes to show that Nigeria is highly endowed with this mineral. But what we are looking for now is the commercial viability of the mineral,’’ he said.

He said that the discovery was made by AG Vision Mining, awarded the exploration project in 2018.

He said that the Federal Government had earmarked N15 billion for exploration of minerals in Nigeria to generate detailed geoscience data of quality and quantity of available minerals in the country.

He said the project aimed at addressing one of the key challenges in the development of the solid minerals sector, which was the absence of bankable mineral data.

“No investor will take us seriously if we are unable to provide the kind of accurate, verifiable data that speaks to both the quality of mineral we have in Nigeria.

“This project is the biggest exploration activity of its kind ever embarked upon by the ministry,” he said.

According to him, the project is domiciled in the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and it is being supervised by the MMSD, it is also funded through the Natural Resources Fund.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the N15 billion was drawn from the Natural Resource Development Fund to the ministry as intervention fund to focus on exploration which is the heart of mining.

He said that the project was designed to be executed and funded in phases, from the desktop studies, geological mapping among others.

The state minister said that all exploration companies and consultants handling exploration projects should provide reports at the end of each project phase.

“The objective of the project is not limited to the generation of detailed geoscience information like ore reserves, mineral occurrences, discovery and reporting of new minerals, quality and grade of ore and minerals.

“The objective is to also improve the geological knowledge of the locality, generate wealth and employment along value chain; the outcome of the project will be used for policy and research purpose.”

Dr Abubakar Mua’zu, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry said that the project was timely as it would attract more mining investors into the country.

Dr Abdulrazak Garba, the Director-General, Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) said the project was initiated to bridge the gap between exploration data and mining development.

Garba said the project was also designed to know locations of minerals such as gold, lead and zinc, silver, copper, tantalite among others in Nigeria.

Mr Fadi Ghazale, the Managing-Director, AG Vision Mining said the event was another landmark in the roadmap towards development of Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.

According to Ghazale, AG vision mining is currently exploring in many states, such as Niger, Ogun and Oyo states. (NAN)

grin grin grin

Its not about the minerals, its about what you do with them. What have you done with oil? Eventually those minerals will run out and you will be left with nothing but your brains to do with. And then there's a certain verse in the same Bible that says something along the lines of God will take away from those who havent utilized their whatevers and add to those who will have made use of their talents grin

I think it depend on what they are ranking. Kenya has one of leanest forces in Africa. We have about 24,000 well-paid, well disciplined and most proffesional armed forces. Smaller countries like Uganda have 45,000 - South Sudan I think has more. ---- Nigeria has what - 1M soldiers - all poorly paid - like the Ethiopia.

Kenya military has always done it's job well, has not overthrown civilian rule and we don't have Boko Haram internally creating refugees like Nigeria.

The indisputable fact is kenya has lean force with one of largest budget in sub-sahara Africa.

Kenyans army is the least powerful army in east africa after Burundi. Even Burundi army sometimes I think is powerful. The so called powerful, well trained and well payed army in East africa massacred by Al Shabab.

one ambush cannot be the yardstick when Kenya overtook alshaabab from most of its southern Territories including their hq Kismayo in few months with little causalities despite us and Brits misgivings . Uganda and Burundi army were moving one inch a day in Mogadishu and to this day have only secured the presidential palace and the airport.Mogadishu is under nearly daily attacks while Kismayo is thriving..a vassal state of Kenya ...jubaland is cooking

If a poor, disorganised al shabab can cost you all those soldiers in one battle, do you think your army can fight Uganda or Tanzania. Burundi and Uganda have armies there and they have not faced anything like that.

Alshaabab are terrorist fighting a non conventional war.Kenya will not waste it's army to fight Uganda or Tanzania...we will send our paramilitary police to deal with them. The GSU and the APs are for Uganda and Tz ..our army is for Somalia and Ethiopia and Sudan. There is not a single barracks near Uganda or TZ border. All our armed bases are north of Nairobi...all our arsenal prepared for war up north..we don't have war scenario where we fight bush soldiers of Uganda or cowards of Tanzania .That is more GSU and AP paramilitary job.

After the war you became the first African country to go bankrupt and Nyerere resigned.
