There is a Larry Obichie who is a Manager with PWC in Cyprus. He looks like he will be the same age as these boys 20yrs later. PWC should be notified if he’s the one. His LinkedIn picture is online.

[quote author=Neddstark post=80120975]This massacre shows how cultism has become a cancer in Nigerian Tertiary Education.
Soyinka started it for a good reason then some evil seeds decided to do theirs based on occultism, supremacy and wickedness.
Imagine organisations having a rules of murdering, engaging robberies, saying forgiveness is sin, indulging in rape, etc. How good can that be for the society.
RIP Afrika, your balls are made of steel indeed.

For every right minded Nigerian, please say No to Cultism. Let your younger ones read this thread below. Most enlightening in the Crime Section

https://www.nairaland.com/5207293/story-cult-phase-included[/quote Uneducated youth. Great Soyinka never started Cultism but Fraternity, which is still practice in Harvard.

They all call themselves confraternities too.So I was right when I said Soyinka started it. But you saw the clause I made after that. He is not to blame for the gansterization of confraternities.

I remember this incident vividly as it was reported then.

OP, you should have at least searched for the story and posted along this. Let our "children" here have a clue about what really happened.

Ordinarily, the management of OAU ought to have since immortalized George Iwilade and other slain OAU students by now.

They haven't? No building or structure has been named after them? That's too bad. There's a library in Unilag named Adekunle Ojo library (which later got converted into an e-library before I graduated). According to my mum, some students were organizing a peaceful protest and a policeman fired warning shots into into the air to dispel the crowd. Sadly the student Adekunle Ojo was hit by a stray bullet and died on the spot. This happened in the early 80s yet he name has been immortalized in form of a library till this day.

The people that paid the ultimate price to restore peace to an institution ought to have been immortalized by now. They made too much of a sacrifice for them to just be remembered once a year like this.

I didn't school in Ife but was surprised one late evening a coaster bus full of OAU students came to the house opposite where we lived to arrest two brothers who were accused of cultism and complicity in the shooting at Ife. The two guys got a tip off earlier and scaled the fence of their house but their parents were caught and dragged into the bus by the students. One of the two brothers (don't want to mention names) read Geology and the other was in engineering. Their parents were a bit connected and their father was luckily released by police men at the Lagos Toll gate that night. That was the last time, we ever saw those two guys. I know they didn't complete their education in Ife. I learnt later they were sent to the US by their parents(can't confirm this pls). Their names were published in the Punch newspaper by police as being wanted for questioning in the cult shooting at Ife. I had finished my BSC then at UNN and came home for my NYSC!!

May the soul of the departed RIP.

I wish to add that the behaviour of the two brothers then, their licentious lifestyle and friends smacks of cultism. There's no way I could vouch for their innocence. When their names and pictures were published on the pages of the punch newspaper, no one on the entire street were surprised.

There is nothing good ...absolutely nothing good comes out of cultism!!

It’s obvious that a lot of the accused changed their names and probably traveled abroad or are keeping a low profile abroad. The truth is whether they escape judgment in the eyes of everyone they will never escape judgment in the eyes of God. Wale Omole should be arrested and prosecuted before he dies. What a useless man. To snuff the lives out of these students for what? And all he gets is a sack.

No, they haven't. On a day like this, OAU alumni (particularly those of that generation) need to have demanded from the management that Iwilade and other heroes be immortalized by the school.

When we sing and say "our heroes past..., we are definitely referring to people like George Akinyemi Iwilade a.k.a Afrika who stood in the face of adversity to repel oppression and resist cultism and hooliganism on campus.

It is also important to note that
1. 4 others were killed.
2. Sadly, justice is yet to be given.

Background started in March 1999

A student was reported to be driving into school and he raced/overtook a car which was believed to have some suspected cultists
The suspected cultists chased him to Mozambique car park and attacked him for overtaking their car
The student ran into Awo Hall,
One of the cultists who was not a student of OAU believed to be a FUTA student chased the student into Awo hall where he was caught by Awo boys
He was interrogated and gave away the hideout of the other suspected cultists in town
The students led by Afrika the Student Union Secretary-General went to arrest the suspected cultists
Brought them to Awo Hall for some interrogation and later handed them over to School authorities
The names of those suspected cultists have already been posted earlier in this thread

The cultists handed over to the school authorities were released and this was the part that indicted the authorities in the murder that followed

A few days later, the School was closed around March 20 and reopened in June

It was believed that the interrogation and humiliation of the suspected cultists who were believed to be members of the was the remote cause of the reprisal attack in July. The National body was said to have seen that as an insult on their group. Members of the cult were recruited from other schools to carry out d the hit

The July attack details are already posted

The aftermath of the attack, the students led an attack on all suspected cultists, some were reported killed, some fled the school and never came back but one guy Efosa Idahosa was caught, and he claimed the VC was in the know. He was handed over to police, taken to court and eventually released

From "Oh! A You!" to the university meant to grind him being seen as iron, thou now has The Lion denned - has thou not? in the Man Shun of The Destitute. Thus, you can continue to rejoice and be glad; that The Samuel of thy accursed generation is no more now but the John Doe thou ever wished him to be - ever since sokoto penpe was a knicker, and omi garri was a water, and eja dindin was a fish.

Thy set-up is not that perfect, however. And thus The You Rear still lives!! - twenty years AND more after being declared late by thee - and not as the urine thou takes him to be, due to which thou called him "wee wee;" but as The Kini Yun due to which thou wilt definitely beg GOD soon, for the Civil War thou sought to avert when before thee was no more than a Samuel.

You will learn a lesson from Cell Block M that you will never forget, should thou be fortunate enough to have not thy days be the days of The Omega.
