Sighs! Where do i even start from
Before the main course, i would like to use the thread to hail every great, hardworking teacher reading this op. I know the society no longer values you, nonetheless you're the greatest.

It is an academic crime to live out this great giant of Africa - Nigeria when we mention countries with state of the art education sector. We produce the worlds top notch labour force.

Arise o compatriots! Nigeria fails again

Ooops almost lost it for a second there. Me and poems. Where was i? Ohh yeah.

Nigerias educational system (dealing with secondary schools for now) is trapped right in the centre of a cyclone.
Nigerian teachers are a hardworking bunch. So hard working, that they are valued no more than a bunch of bananas.
Oooops sorry. Im derailing my own thread.

I was scrolling through the senior secondary nerdc curriculum for biology and my jaw dropped. There are so many topics in them that i can't help but wonder how the teacher is expected to complete this voluminous scheme.
The teacher has about three periods per week of which he is to copy or dictate notes to the students, and ensure that at least 70% of the students understand the topic being taught. Remember he has just three freaking periods each lasting for 40 or so minutes.
Now you may think im nuts but before you think- let me further elaborate.

The labour of our heros past have already been in vain.

Most Nigerian students cannot afford to buy most textbooks, so the system ensures that the teacher gives notes to students by writing on the board or sometimes dictate(which might be even more slower). The problem is: Giving students note takes time considering the how verbose some subjects might be. Not only is the teacher to give notes, he also has to explain the notes, give exercises, assignments, and marks them also.

to serve with heart and might?naija? God forbid
Recently, third term was scrapped from ss3 curriculum but the topics themselves for the term were not. Now the honourable teacher has to make a way where they seems to be no way and fix this "internally displaced" subjects into either the first term scheme or that of Second term. Also remember that the first term and second term schemes are already jam-packed. How does the ministry expect to produce globally competitive students?

If you are a teacher kindly share how you tackled this problem of too many topics.
Are your students responding well to the hectic amount of knowledge they have to take in within a limited time frame?
How do you summarise notes and still ensure you dont miss out vital ingredients(details)
Is this sort of system proper?
Why cant students(sss) be given handouts to create more time for actual learning?

Any solutions or strategies to counter this curse.
How did you successfully fuse the topics of now obselete third term for ss3 classes?

They've played Nigeria my country,
Turned into slavery, loyals and dummies
Trying to save Nigeria with all my sense
So will God help me? I think not.
Am-out.

You're sneaky! But that's beside the point. You took my money so I got to give you my time. Jesus said I must.

It's the "understand" above, see. Teachers spend so much time "copy or dictate notes to the students" that there's no time left to ensure that "at least 70% of the students understand the topic being taught". Kind of explains our believing attitude don't you think? You, teacher, might be ensuring we copy notes but student me spends 100% of my time copying notes in a language I don't understand full of words I never heard before and don't know the meaning of. What else you want me to do but take your word for it, believe you and cram my head full of your notes? After all, believe, they tell me and I'll get to go to heaven and live eternal life so why wouldn't believing you make me pass biology? Except you get to see how ignorant I am when the topic is evolution, which I'm certain is in the notes you made me copy but which I obviously do not understand. You got to shake your head, I'm sure, at how dumb you've made me be.

We don't see it in Mathematics which no one can cram. Students have to practice so much until they understand because if they don't practise they will not understand, and you try doing maths you don't understand and see how far you get.

I'm afraid our teachers are the ones who are dumb. Most are in the dark ages when education was religion so "believe student, believe these facts" is their teaching mode. They haven't evolved to "understand student, understand the implications of these facts!" And no wonder they don't get the respect they deserve. I'm more likely to return and say "thank you teacher" to one who taught me to use my brain to understand than one who crammed my head full of notes in a language I don't understand full of words I never heard before and don't know the meaning of and can only hope and pray and have faith I would remember at exams. Except all my remembering is worthless in the end. You, teach, failed me, or gave me a high mark to hide how dumb you are!

Teachers need to go back to school and learn what it means to teach, is the point. Only by their own learning can they ensure I'm an understanding proud to serve compatriot and not a flat earth non-evolving excuse for a biologist that you turned me into!

P.s. I'm sure I paid my school fees on time and in full. I got receipt to prove it too. So gimme my money back, teach! The education you sold me was a dud angry

this thoughts have ached my head and troubled my mind, that's why i cried for help. i tried to take things into my own hands but there were some consequences; one being always 'left behind' in the curriculum.

teeacher gnashes his teeth when he realises students dont understand anything being thought. teacher is aware but the teacher is in a dilemma. teacher must choose between loving the students or the syllabus.
if teacher loves the student, then he can be rest assured that his goal for the term would never be reached. you see, teacher knows some students learn faster than lightening, some as fast as ferrari, some as fast as toyata camry, others as petroleum tankers and lastly, those like automatic Peugeot 406 with dead battery.
teacher as much as he loves his job cannot invest all efforts in it because he has his own kids to hustle for. No! its not about the money but certainly a mans gotta eat.

We don't see it in Mathematics which no one can cram. Students have to practice so much until they understand because if they don't practise they will not understand, and you try doing maths you don't understand and see how far you get.
student should consult teacher for more explanation. teacher never denied students the right to ask questions.

I'm afraid our teachers are the ones who are dumb.
teachers aren't dumb, the education system is dumb. there are indeed dumb teachers but not in the sense we are conversing now.

Most are in the dark ages when education was religion so "believe student, believe these facts" is their teaching mode. They haven't evolved to "understand student, understand the implications of these facts!" And no wonder they don't get the respect they deserve.
Teacher is always happy to teach. but there comes a time- rather more often than none- that teacher would be depressed by his inability to provide-sufficiently- for his own family. teacher also is demoralized by students who consciously doesn't want to learn. teacher can only lead a horse as far as the stream but the horse must decide wether the dive his tongue into the waters of wisdom or defecate on such waters to pollute it.

You, teach, failed me, or gave me a high mark to hide how dumb you are!
teacher is happy that his pupils and students express their joy with respect to his services all over teachers facebook wall. teacher is happy students enjoyed his little service. teacher is happy he Godfathers some of this students and is hoping to sponsor some through higher institutions as he is currently sponsoring one even though teachers family demand exceeds in verbose amounts his income.

Teachers need to go back to school and learn what it means to teach, is the point. Only by their own learning can they ensure I'm an understanding proud to serve compatriot and not a flat earth non-evolving excuse for a biologist that you turned me into!
teacher learnt to teach. teacher even though not trained by professional in terms of formalities, nonetheless teacher made use of resources on the world wide wed and educated himself. teacher need not another to tell him of his flaws. He looked within and he saw what he lacked.

P.s. I'm sure I paid my school fees on time and in full. I got receipt to prove it too. So gimme my money back, teach! The education you sold me was a dud.
monies paid to school authority is non refundable.

Very interesting that kkins25 cries out for help. And not just that, but kkins25 has been doing homework too, reading words that buda makes and that he called - what did you call buda words again kkins? Not something pleasant, dare I say! So are you asking me to believe you wish to be a student and learn? I must say, that would be hard, but buda is willing to try.

I wrote about your problem here, though it is really my own. Rather than understand that teaching is about becoming a student oneself, we think we already know it all. So instead of learning, we insult those whom we might learn from or just refuse to learn and poopoo the lesson taught instead of admitting we are too ignorant to comprehend. But who remains stupid then, the teacher who can't find a way past the student's barriers to learning, or the student who puts up barriers? I say they both fail! But thankfully, it's not like one is being paid for one on one lessons. For surely while some learn not, one leper out of ten just might and go on to produce a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

It is for this reason that we do what I describe here, which is to fully understand that which we teach and the student and their barriers too as well as the task that we take on. And even then, we just sow seeds, hoping one day the light of understanding will be lit. And mind, it is not about believing, or God, for that matter, just would one not be a foolish teacher if one does not learn the methods of master teachers? I assure you that those who don't, teach in vain, as you seem to be finding.

Do know that I do not gnash my teeth when those I teach misunderstand. I blame myself for your ignorance and barrier erecting instead. Surely if I were a better teach you would gladly learn. But I would not beat myself to death if it be that you don't learn because you are a bad student who refuses to do homework or question that which you misunderstand. Besides, I'll still get paid whether you learn or not, so note it's for my love for you, student, that I may even bother.

Please keep the monies that I paid you, you need it more than I. I am buda, which means teacher, and I do it with every word I write, in parables, dare I say. But I do recall your view of them, so can't exactly say you are yet a student. For as you said, the test of studentship is as I quote you below which we would agree we can not yet say has heretofore been the case. And yes, I repeat it, for it is my cane to make you mend your ways.

kkins25:
student should consult teacher for more explanation. teacher never denied students the right to ask questions.

So let us tarry on awhile and test first that we ask questions and seek really to understand. Then, perhaps, we shall learn.

Please know that I commend the fact that you bother. Most teachers just collect their pay and go.

@bolded above can you elaborate Or kindly show me where I made negative comments about buda's sayings.
Teacher is still learning, teacher want to learn, teacher had planned to even obtain a pgde soon, unfortunately my savings haven't been mine alone. Nonetheless, teacher is still learning, teacher wouldn't have mounted surveillance on buda's activities on this forum if teacher had no interest in learning.

By the way, I am trying to find out if a sum of 2million naira can get me schooled abroad for a msc/mphil program? Any ideas, suggestion, advice?
Vaax any ideas? Can 30000 cedis get me schooled abroad, nd where exactly?
