If you all recall the discussion between Bascovanveli and I many months ago, we both discussed the possibility of Ighalo going on to emerge Afcon Top scorer on top of being Qualifiers top scorer and crowning it with an Afcon trophy to give him a shot at APOTY.

Well only a part of our thoughts came through. Ighalo did emerge top scorer back to back...

Bascovanveli, I am sure you remember the discussion.... I have personally had reservations about Iggy and his touch-and-go form.... But I always gave him my support to deliver.

He did struggle in the GWG for years but his latter periods with the team is quite a story to behold. He finished well even though he didn't start well.... And the race of life is for finishers...not starters.

You just have to give it up for Iggy (shown on Rohr's right)..... He retires a hero. And showed that he is farrrrrrrr better than that Overhyped Chris Boy called Niang....

Yea I remember that discussion grin My opinion is that he should stay because leading the line for Nigeria as I have said is a thankless job and it takes time to be able to figure it out. The problem is we don't have such time and we need Ighalo to continue doing his thing while the others develope.

That Senegalese no 9 is the worst striker I have ever seen. How did that guy get to play football professionally?

He was kinda good at youth level with France but fizzled out when he stepped up

This one Mikel and Ighalo has announced their retirements, we are waiting for Ogu, Ezenwa and Akpeyi to do likewise

If them like, make them no announce retirement

According to a news that was posted earlier, Rohr would most likely include them in future squad lists.

Including Balogun but getting regular playing time may help his cause

Uzoho is 6'5 and he is taller than Alampasu

Alampasu is listed at around the same height.

1.98m equivalent to 6ft 5.9inches

So, they are slightly similar in height

Funny thing is 6 foot is a pretty average height in the states but here in Naija we are considered giants grin

Average male height in the states is 5ft 9

But why do France-born African players that choose to play for France become big players signed by big teams while those that choose to play for African teams struggle to make it big in world football.

Africa's most successful footballers in European club football (like Eto'o, Drogba, Kanu etc) were born in Africa.

Those born in France (or other European countries) become stars only if they play for France, Belgium etc.

Kante, Dembele, Pogba, and majority of the French WC winning team of African origin were born in France. Those that were their mates at junior level (like all these Niang, Feghouli, etc) in French national team but end up playing for their African country at the senior level end up at best average in club football success.

An exception is Aubameyang (born in France) who was a French junior international but played for Gabon and a success at club level.

By the way, just saw that Vieira was actually born in Senegal and Desailly born in Ghana (not in France).

See let me tell you and this is it

All France born African players always wanted to play for France only the average ones that's have seen they can't make the French team choose to play for an African team

If mbappe pogba are average they will be playing for Cameroon and guinea ,dem no dey tell mad man say wat don start

Nzonzi had to wait till 29 years old to make French team and ended up as World Cup winner if nzonzi wasn't good he should be playing for dr Congo

If ngolo Kante was not superb in the Epl he will be playing for Mali

Paul pogba brothers are crappy players that's why they played for guinea ,they are not even making the squad anymore because they are not good enough

But I wonder what made kondogbia later switched to play for Central African Republic after 5 caps for France

Na the one I know I talk sha

Ighalo should retire. It is a step in the right direction for him and more importantly for the Super Eagles.

We depended on Mikel for too long until age caught up with him while we failed to develop talents in the creative midfield department.

Should Ighalo remain, I forsee the same thing happening to the no 9 position.

I am banking on the newer talents like Osimhen, Odey et al to step up their game and ensure we don't miss Ighalo.

NB: I am not an Ighalo hater oooo. The guy really tried for us and has paid his dues. But all parties must come to an end. Good luck to him in his future endeavours

He shouldn't. He is just getting started and I there are absolutely no signs of him falling off. When he drops in form we can simply stop calling him but until then it would be ridiculous to allow a striker who has scored 12 goals in his last 11 competitive matches go just like that.

I support his quitting now. Ovation is loudest. Better to be begged to stay (and he refuses) than to be disgraced out of the team. We have short memory in Nigeria. If he goes 3 matches without scoring now, we will forget his 12 goals in one year and start calling for his head.

Even at club level, he will stop getting suitors in the next 2 years and will find himself playing 10-12 games a season in Qatar.

By the way, we should not forget that this Algerian team held Germany (eventual WC winner) to extra time in WC 2014 round of 16. But a dip in form for like 2 years made us underestimate them going into this AFCON.

I rated Morocco highly. Don't know what is wrong with them.

This is a golden generation for Senegal, I suspect they will end up like the golden generation of CIV, where they failed to win AFCON until their golden generation retired (except Toure). But I think this Senegal team will still win an AFCON - maybe 2023.

They still have good young players scattered across Europe.

In fact. majority of the players that played today for both Algeria and Senegal were ex-French junior international. Most of tehm were born in France. Even Mahrez was born in France (although never played for France at junior level). But most others played for French under-17, under-21 etc like our own Iwobi and Aina played for England for English juinor teams and Ekong for Dutch junior team.
even both coaches were born in France

Congrats to the Algerians for a well-deserved trophy. They were truly the best organised team at the AFCON.

By the way, I think the reason why the "golden generations" of Ghana, CIV and Senegal have largely failed to shine in the World cup and AFCON in this century (barring CIV's feat in 2015) is the nature of their midfields. The midfields of these three teams comprises only box-box players and defensive midfielders. None of them had a midfield orchestrator in the mold of a Debruyne, Pirlo, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Mikel, Okocha, Oliseh, Riquelme etc.

Midfield orchestrators/deep-lying playmakers are important especially in really tight games. These kinds of players have the ability to unlock stubborn defenses with one key pass. Most times, when creativity was needed, there was nobody that took the mantle for the aforementioned teams.

But CIV had Yaya Toure that can do all this things even better than our very own Mikel na, yet they didn't win it with their golden generation of Drogba And co.

Those teams were not just luck, it has nothing to do with their Midfield. Because those teams played the finals multiple times but they just miraculous loose either by a fluke one goal margin, like We saw Senegal yesterday , or they loose on penalty shoot out just like Ghana and CIV in the past.

So luck was the element they lacked, not a midfield orchestrator like you implied

Yaya Toure is mainly a B2b midfielder. Dude is not a controller.

I beg to disagree

The scenarios are different and it has a lot to do with the method of colonialism. The average Francophone African is more welcomed in France than an Anglophone African is welcomed in England.

English system will ALWAYS put their own above any outsiders in everything, irrespective of how great the player is. Do you think 29-year old Nzonzi would have ever played for the English National team at his age? England would rather take a bang average 32-year old PURE English man, than an Nzonzi to the World Cup, no matter how good he is.

England and France are not the same thing as far as players are concerned, and there are some great English players of African descent that will never get to play for England, because of that bias England has.

You must not know football fans. Have you seen how English fans bash their footballers when they lose? What about the Colombians? Wetin Ighalo chop wey Mikel and Yobo never chop twice as much as?

This your talk no blend, football fans are highly emotional about the game, so, bashing is something players should expect, not something that can bw controlled
