I work in a private school too. My salary is 60k and I also do private after school and home lessons. At the end I get 110k monthly.
I take my school proprietress is very accommodating but they do owe salary a lot. That's just the down side of it.
Your location matters a lot. Like me , I don't work where I live because my area is not an highbrow area

What you have to do is go out in your street and also the neighboring street and look out for households who you can offer your service directly. You can arrange with as many households as possible and teach their children daily. But I guess this won't allow you teach as many people because of time. You can charge N10,000 a month per student. If you get 5, that's N50,000. That's one way.

Do you have a free room? Another way is by convincing those households to have their children attend class in your house at a set time. This way, you'll accommodate more students as you'll basically run a mini school in your room. And as above, you can charge them N10,000 a month per student. If you get 5, that's N50,000.

If you can't do any of the above, you can try blogging your experiences about anything that interest you. Then, add google advert there. Yet, if you can't do this, I can show you an online business that can make you at least $300 a month for a start but because you need money for tools and knowledge of other things to do that, it may not be an option.

I was a victim of this wicked system back in the days. Even though I was heady and refused to submit lesson plans, I still taught maths, further maths and physics for 20k for one year.

By the end of the year I told myself one truth: 'if all I do everyday is sleep at home, I'll have more dignity than teach in that school.'


I left the school even when I didn't have anything doing. That was the best decision I ever took. I tried talking sense to some of my colleagues then but they wouldn't listen. To this day some of them still teach.

When I left, I printed private tutoring fliers and distributed around churches and hung on streets. Registered with online tutoring platforms like tuteria and others...

It didn't take long before I started getting calls. I tutored in the evening after school while learning data analytics morning and night. I had excess time.

By the time I was leaving tutoring, I tutored a minster's child and other affluent individuals. I was making 5 figures just tutoring. I had worth while connections. I only stopped tutoring because it was time to get off my comfort zone.

My advice to anyone graduate teaching in a private school is, leave right now. The sooner you left the easier.

I guess I was a bit lucky.. taught in a school in Ilorin.. starting salary was more than the minimum wage then. Opened a pension account for each staff and the school pays 70% while d staff pays 30% into the pension account every month. welfare packages every December, before I left the school the cleaner was earning 12k.
And salary increases every new session. I missed the school but I have my own dream to achieve also.

I taught in one way back. It is usually the first resort for the average job-seeking graduate. I remember the pay was a little about 10k. They handed me a staffbook. It contained so many DON'Ts and each attracted a fine. Somehow, 95% of the DONTs looked like what you must DO (inadvertently).

To worsen it sef, the principal been dey send me to buy him chilled Pepsi. If e no cold well, e go send me back to change am.

I wanted to leave but I couldn't because I wouldn't be paid for the common entrance lesson and I had not gotten any other opportunities elsewhere.

Sometimes in early February, She called me that I would be handling primary 5 Common entrance lessons which is meant to hold every Saturday and at the end of the third term the money will be shared between Me, a staff that partners me and the proprietress. She said the money will be shared 60%(I and another man) to 40%(the proprietress). The formula was very unfair and strange to me. The sharing formula seemed very strange to me and I challenged it but she enforced it.

Fast forward to early this month, precisely 3rd of July, the proprietress started acting strange and insulting all the workers and all that. The following week she sent one of the oldest staff by to inquire what will be the staff reaction if they are not paid at the end if the term. The staff said they won't agree to such and some even threaten various actions. Fast forward to Thursday 25th of July, vacation day. the woman started up a plethora of complaints deliberately she said she was going to pay 4000 as July salary. The same thing she did at the end of second term. At the end she ended up not paying a dime. She didn't pay any of us. Not even the common entrance lesson which made me stay.

I cried and stayed inside throughout Friday. I had a deep thinking, with my academic background! Was it that I didn't know my worth? with all my struggles to be successful academically I am now slaving in one private school for a paltry sum of 15k, money wey I no fit cope with as an undergraduate! Money wey be say no reach my NYSC allawe!
I really feel for graduates going through phases like this. I really feel for graduates teaching at private schools. I pray better days finds you and I soon.

My God! . Some of us that didn't pass through this kind of hell don't know what God did for us. Imagine a graduate earning 15k. Where I for start? God forbid!

May God see you through bro. Move out of where you're staying. Get to a city, probably Lagos, Portharcourt, etc. You won't die. Try new things. Apply for jobs like your life depends on it. You can forward your CV, I will help you edit it and make it attractive to recruiters. Good CV is very important.

Employment in a Private School is just like any other employment by any other profit driven private organisation.

It is a necessary bridge to greater things in the future.

While I do concede that many private School owners can be demons, i would also like to let you know that the work ethic of the Nigerian graduate is also below par.

The private school owner experiences a day to day struggle until he attains some socio-economic balance.
Until then, he really can only give out what he can...including the rather obnoxious but logical resort to paying salaries during the school term.

Cut them some slack.

They may not be perfect but they have taken a number of people off the street.

At some point they will be forced by competition to treat their staff well.

Life is indeed perfect.

I have always pitied teachers, that is the worse job anyone can do in Nigeria.

Look for good and standard schools. I teach in a private primary school and I earn 6 digits every month. If I do private lesson for any child, the least I'll take is 50k. Pele, it's just a passing phase but you have to leave that school ASAP!
