We are not writing exams. When it is time to study English, we do so. When they visit Nigeria, they should go about correcting everyone who speaks a brand of English made by us and for us.
uuzba:

No it is not

Jamaicans speak own creole. A pigin English.
It is different from their English.
We also speak various dialects of Pidgin English. That is also a thing well recognised. It has always existed.
Pidgin English is a separate language with English and language words a mixed up by people trying to communicate in English straight from their native tounge

English is another language. Learn it and pass your exams. There's no excuse

One of the tacharistics of language is that it is dynamic. It evolves. 'They gave us English.' That's a prehistoric assertion. The world is developing the English language we speak today. Go to Encarta; search Nigerian English.
I live in Nigeria. I don't have to go to any encyclopaedia.
I was taught English right here in Nigeria.
I spoke it and passed my exams
I went over to UK. Spoke the English very well without ANY MISUNDERSTANDING. They spoke back without any misunderstanding. I cracked English Joke, they laughed. They cracked English Joke Iaughed.

If you can't speak English learn it.

On point! I just love Americans, they have a way of making life very easy. All this wohala we do here in order to speak good English isn't necessary at all. Americans speak English the way they want and no one can questions them. Abeg I wan sleep

This is a bigoted assertion. The people you claim to get this from still enquire of themselves, 'How was your night?'.

Don't just accept anything you see on the internet blindly. It was a person (probably more flawed than you are) that put it there.

Dem dun dey tell u now, u no wan learn
Instead u wan dey do "over-sabi"

"How was your night" is absolutely not very proper.

But one should always go with:
How was your night rest?
How was your night shift?
How was your night out?
Etc

Cambridge has even come to terms with this variant of English that they developed an English exam that accommodates it.

Right from the days of 2go to this day of Insta, I've never ever liked it when a guy asks a lady "How was your night"

The phrase irks me and I sometimes criticized guys who uses the phrase on social media while trying hard to woo a lady. Lol

"I hope you had a good sleep last night. Huh?"
"You slept well last night. Huh?"
"You had a good night sleep?"

.....these are in order
.....these are what I use
Re: Stop Asking People 'How Was Your Night', It Is Wrong English by Sunsets: 11:29pm On Aug 15, 2019
Americans now owned theirs. The British respect it even when spoken in the 'custodian's' domain. Dynamism of language
1Sharon:

Intellectually, mentally & culturally enslaved ? Definitely not me.

I did already state this a few posts back that there is nothing wrong in Nigerian English amongst Nigerians. But when among the Brits who are custodians of the language you would need to switch up some words and phrases cos they would call you out for that. Deal with it

Who else is more of an authority on English than the English themselves?

Majority of you here are missing the point and are feeling attacked.

They've come to terms with the inability of Nigerians to speak correct English
Well, I never met a British person who spoke Nigerian English to me
My official written communication is proper English (emails/letters)
I don't ask anybody "How was your night?" And don't expect to be asked it..
If a Nigerian introduces themselves to me officially in "bad," English that is usually the end of communication. I just consider the person as not an official material and take the person less serious. I may even switch over to pidgin English to save the person stress of big English .

First, "how was your night?" is grammatically correct and therefore cannot be termed "wrong English". Having said this, it's apparent that its use or otherwise is subject to regional differences.

Some greetings are used more frequently in certain parts of the world than others due to cultural differences and provided there's nothing wrong with the grammar, there's nothing like wrong or right here. While an English man would rather ask about the weather, a Nigerian man would prefer to ask if your night went well.

However, you might want to use the form of greeting more popular in your immediate location.

Do you know a Chinese man asks "chi fan le?" as a form of greeting? It simply means "have you eaten rice?" or more literally "eaten rice?". And no, it's not wrong.

If I am any right I don't think how was your night is grammatically correct because it's a totally vague question in the first instance how was your night and how was your noon mean exactly the same and the answer is my night was my night not yours and vice versa, subtly put why come up with such a vague question when u can use hope u had a restful night which is a much more of a direct question in my opinion.

Nigerians and wahala, nah matter wey no be matter we dey flex muscle on top.
"How was your night" has no other meanings to a sane mind than what it meant in structure, nah only robot they look for meaning wey no dey. Must we forever be zombies?

In Nigeria, night nah night. Period.

It would have, been better asking how was the night than how was your night, you have absolutely no frigging business in his night, its his to deal with.

May I remind you: the Niger-Congo languages of which Volta-Congo is a part of share genetic unity in structure. That is why almost all languages spoken in Nigeria except Hausa do not struggle with understanding these expressions. They share the same root. I make bold to say that you cannot point out a distinct Niger-Congo language that doesn't greet this way.
uuzba:

Before asking your question, make sure the person is from your exact village
We are Nigerians from different tribes. Consider that you are speaking to someone NOT from your village
To assist in this process, the white people gave us English, with its own rules. This is what me and you are currently using right now to communicate.
I cannot spesk your native language. You cannot speak mine
But we can both speak English
Speak it with English rules. Let us equally face the challenge.

If you keep speaking your version of English that offends me, I will reciprocate by speaking my version of English that will offend you
Final result, we bothoffend each other and there is no communication anymore

Nigeria is a multicultural country
Must you know somebody's exact village before you greet the person?
If that is your mission in life, I wish you the best
Is it not enough to know he is an Nigerian and speaks English?

You've not even begun discussing serious issues and proposing solution, you are still there discovering a stranger's village before your even greet the person? Hence we never progress in this nation. Just get on with it.

Dude, good morning. Blah-blah-blah.

I give no damn about your night or what you did in your house.... That's your private business. Don't ask me my own. We discuss business and get result.
When I trust you more or even Like you at all, I can then enquire about your village and tribe and ask you what you did in your house.

Don't intrude on my private space until I let you
Don't ask me, how was my night? It isn't just your business how my night was.

Well, I never knew this until now, but I've never been a fan of the sentence "how was your night". And whenever anyone asked me how was my night, I tell them, "I slept with my two eyes closed and my heart beating at the normal rate without pains in any part of my body" and most of them bust into laughter when they hear my reply.

I was chatting with my cousin in UK and she’s a bit older than me. So I said how are you doing my dear and she replied “dear?” I was confused and she said.
Dear, you don’t call your seniors my dear. How about big sis or Aunty. I was shocked that she could have just corrected me rather getting infuriated.
I apologized and blocked her immediately
