This landslide was obviously caused by erosion over several years (if not decades) of neglect. You can see gullies all over SE and SS and often times city and LGA don't pay it any mind until it's too late.

It's up to local government to decide how to partition and develop the land. They are in charge of where local roads go, where houses should be built, how to channel water and build drainage. I don't remember paying CofO or development fee to FG. I paid to State and LGA respectively. I pay land use taxes to the State, and even paid fees to the Obi of the town, including youths. What I'm saying that responsibility falls upon those I pay those fees to.

Desertification is not as a result of poor city planning or drainage, and I can understand why that would be a national issue. If there was some unprecedented rainfall or earthquake, then I can agree that it would be FG's domain.

However, the amount of rainfall we get very year can be planned for; and the fees we pay should be used to make sure that the predictable, repeatable amounts of rainfall every season does not result in flooding and erosion. Build proper drainage after understanding water flow, don't litter, plant trees and shrubs to hold soil together, don't do too much interlocking or cement which prevents water from soaking into the ground naturally: these are things we all learned in primary school.

I very rarely call people out, but I think you're just intentionally being an IDIOT.

I am from Asaba, and I am all over SE and SS. I call Onitsha, Enugu, Owerri my other homes. You want to tell me that you don't see how - every season - small gullies develop. Sometimes at the side of the road, sometimes near homes, sometimes at river banks. EVERY season it gets worse as more soil gets eroded. Then after a few seasons there's not enough solid soil underneath the road or property and suddenly it collapses (e.g. landslide). And you're pointing me to wikipedia to tell me that it was not predictable and preventable? And want to drag FG for matter that is devolved to the LGA and State?

For the record, the same problem happens in Ogbomosho. Any damn place we have a lot of rain, poor planning and drainage, coupled with lack of foresight - we have erosion which is ignored till it becomes landslide. Every primary school child has seen soil erosion in real life, and was taught in a class about the cause and effect.

We can argue this point, but you know I'm damn right on this issue. Instead of discussing the logic and how to prevent this by the people who we pay fees to (local), we want to drag FG into a matter it has no business with.
