Reasons Why Most Nigerian Graduates Are Not Employable by africa4ever: 5:35pm On Aug 30, 2019
The increasing number of unemployed Nigerian graduates is quite alarming. According to survey, Nigeria has 47 percent of its university graduates unemployed.

Its quite surprising that a country considered as Africa’s largest economy could have such percentage of unemployed graduates from well renowned tertiary institution.

Here, we’ll be dealing with some possible reasons why Nigerian graduates are unemployable.
Course of study not in line with society’s need
One of the possible reasons why Nigerian graduates are unemployed is because their course of study in the tertiary institution is not actually or not in-tune with the society’s need.

This is because the quality of education and focus of training offered by the tertiary institution are quite different from the major needs of the society.

And so the graduates are faced with the challenge of knowing how to meet the society’s need since their course of study is not in-line hence, leaving them unemployed.

Job experience before offered employment
Another reason is that most employers require some years of working experience as a criteria before offering a job. This leaves the graduates off-balance as they just finished schooling with little or no working experience.

The surprising thing is that some employers will require 5 years working experience from a fresh graduates. How and where do they expect them to get such working experience from?

Low educational quality
The educational system in Nigeria is very poor compared to other country’s. Nigerian graduates compete for employment with graduates who studied outside the country and often times they are rejected because of the standard of education they acquired is low compared with that of their competitors.

This is a call for the relevant authorities to look into the educational system of the country.

Lack of employable skills
The Nigerian tertiary institutions have over the years produced graduates that lack employable skills that could guarantee employment. Their mind is like a tabular-rasa when it comes to employable skills. The educational system need to be improved to produce graduates equipped with the necessary skills.

Emphasis are not placed on entrepreneurship
Another major reason is that the country doesn’t place emphasis on the need for entrepreneurship in the school curricula. Graduates were not exposed to entrepreneurship while still in school due to emphasis were placed on theoretical education more than entrepreneurship.

Outdated curricula
Also, a number of curricula in Nigerian universities used are outdated. They are no longer in tune with the present university education realities, hence graduates are not equipped with the knowledge that drive Nigeria’s labour market.

Graduates lack the know-how in seeking for jobs.
One of the proven reasons why most Nigerian graduates are still unemployed is that they lack the required knowledge of seeking for jobs, making them loose out in the search. They are deficient in the knowledge of know-how in seeking for job.

So true... If the government can focus on inculcating the spirit of entrepreneurship into we the youths, there will be nothing like increase in unemployment anymore.

The government cannot employ everyone neither should the citizens be reliant on the government for jobs. Empower people to become entrepreneurs.

Not just that though... The environment should be favorable as well:
- good and safe road to transport goods
- source of constant (or almost-constant) electricity so operations can flow
- Rewards (in the form of support) to entrepreneurs doing well so they'll be eager to continue...

Well... Since the government are not doing these things yet (not that I know of), we can build ourselves and not just wait for a "government" to help us... Start with a small step till the dream becomes the reality.

I totally agree with you. This is the solution. Time has come when we no longer need to depend on the government. We need to fight for what belongs to us.

Yeah you're 100% correct. Imagine someone who studied petroleum engineering and doesn't even know the process of refining petrol. Even the oil bunkering guys are more skilled in petroleum refining than those so called petroleum engineering graduates. Only professional certification can correct the problem

wink

Yeah,so true .....
I think it's high time people dont have to depend on the government for Work cos the real truth is that govt can't provide work for all the citizens

People been to learn entrepreneurship or a particular skill/handwork so as to be self employed and stop depending on govt

The govt on its part should create a favourable environment for easy and smooth running of business such as providing good roads, lower taxes, constant Power supply and others....

But Na 9ja we de shaaa.....
If only you understand what u mean.. sad

Ok, every other faults still goes to the Government.
They have done well by graduating, Government should play their roles by making naija graduates employable. Irrespective of ur course of discipline or area of specialization, everyone has a place in Government ministries ranging from fisheries to forestry to counselling to language studies to woteva.
All we need is government policy that will promote functionality of the so called ministries, stop the nonsense of you have to knw one senator b4 u get employed. Encourage and entices foreign investors by assuring good security, reasonable tax and above all Common sense is what naija government is lacking which is the major reason why unemployment graduates keep increasing on a daily basis.

Certificates will not land you a job, but skills will.

If an illiterate who is skilled in welding and a PHD holder both go to canada or any other western country today. The illiterate will get a job before the PHD holder.

I believe that there is only one reason why Nigerian graduates are perceived as being unemployable, it is lack of skills. The world is now running a skilled economy and not a qualifications economy. If you don't have the prerequisite skills what will you be doing in the organization?

I concur with your points up there but I also wants to iterate some.
85% of graduate don't learn anything from the university. Lets not discriminate any university, be it federal / state anf private. There is little or no difference between a secondary school graduate and some PhD holder in Nigeria ( the only difference is that so called graduate has been certified a crammer, even though majority cheat there way through).

Nigeria Universities lecturer dont even understand what they are teaching and they teach students that graduate and also will teach what he doesn't know. And the cycle continues. literally nothing is learnt from the university that will benefit our society.

I believe the way forward is revamping our curriculum and scraping of courses which are not of economic importance.

Mission and objectives of the courses should be adhered to. A Bsc Agriculture graduate should at all time be able to serve either as a farm manager, consultant, researcher to increase national crop yields e. t. c ( But since it is lacram la pour and lasex money la mark we do how will that happen) B eng graduate should be able to design equipment to make life easy for us and by commercialisation of his design he gets his cash.

But here in Nigeria, what students says is that lemme just get this certificate, and graduate. And any country whose herd mentality is lemme get certificate and graduate can never progress.

They don’t know how to Search for invisible job abi?
From what I have seen elsewhere, there are three reasons why jobs are hard to find in Nigeria
1 lack of basic infrastructure to support businesses
2 insecurity; lack of security for life and property of employers.
3 Lack of work and business ethics.
Finally, 8hours a day single shit (mostly 8am -4pm) is not enough to fully utilize the capacity of millions of the employable population in Nigeria. Most countries, people work round the clock so a particular position would have 3 openings to be filled.

We are really facing hard reality in this country. But then, someone must always write things about why we have the problems we have no matter how lame the excuses seem.
