onegentleguy: A CHOICE BETWEEN UPDC and UACN... part 2 In my view, the move to unbundle or possibly divest from some of its loss-making and not-so-profitable business segments is coming a bit late. ...though better late than never. Just a few weeks ago, the group(UACN) gave up its majority stake position(51% before then) in their logistic business arm(MDS logistic) to the core investor(imperial logistics). ...taking their total stake to 57% and reducing that of UACN to 43%(an 8% swap). That arm has witnessed a difficult path to cost optimization(higher CoS) and dwindling revenue, despite the groups effort at curbing down OPEX. Worse still, is that vol has been on the downward trend for some quarters now. I think it will be best for UACN to consider given up more stake in that arm(logistic) of business to aid leverage. I also think the quick service restaurant arm of business should be divested from in totality. ...think UACN holds more than a 50% stake therein. However, the move to give up of its entire stake in UPDC(64.2% as at H1, 2019) is the most STRATEGIC move to growth if u ask me. The increased revenue witnessed in Q2, 2019 by UPDC is not sustainable. ...especially when u consider the fact that any drive in sales has always been bitten down by high interest payments. Good a thing, the group(UACN) is gradually recovering its mkt share in the Agric feeds business segment(H1, 2019 in view). ...while the packaged foods(UAC foods) and paint business segments are doing great. At the current mkt price, I have no doubt in my mind that UACN holds in it, a lot of prospect. ...a lot of inherent VALUE !! |

onegentleguy: A CHOICE BETWEEN UPDC and UACN... part 3 Away from the matter of the proposed unbundling, and safe for the points I highlighted ealier, there are a couple of other reasons why I'd choose UACN ahead of UPDC. One such reason is the issue of RISK when put side by side with ones expected ROI. To help guage that, it would be nice to compare their ALTMAN Z-SCORE and relate it to their FVE(H1 2019 financial print in view) It's a fine way to permute from btw 2 or more coys with the aim of gauging btw risk and VALUE. By the way, the ALTMAN Z-SCORE is an investment tool used to assess the risk-return(ROI discounting risk) profile of a company in line with an investors preference. The idea is to try to benchmark the risk inherent in a company against ur risk tolerance at any given time. The formula for ALTMAN Z-SCORE is; Az= 1.2W + 1.4L + 3.3R + 0.6P + T Where W is the company's NWC ratio(ie working capital pegged against total asset) L is the leverage power of the company(the ability to finance their asset through retained profit ahead of debt) Mathematically, L= retained earnings/total asset R is ROTA(return on total asset). ...a measure of how well a firm can generate earnings from its assets.(I also love ZENITH, FCMB, CAVERTON, FO, UBA, AIICO, CONOIL, FIDELITY, GTB and LARFAGE WAPCO for this and of course, a few other reasons) R= EBIT/total asset P is the price to book(P/B) of the coy. While T is the total asset to turnover(used to checkmate how well a company's revenue/sales was generated from its assets) Mathematically, T= revenue/total asset. In principle, its far much safer to invest in a company with a high or above peer average ALTMAN Z-SCORE than the low ones. The thing about de-risking means that it might sometimes be even better to invest in a rightly priced or even slightly overvalued asset with high Altman z-score than an underpriced asset with a much lower score. This partly explains why the price of GTB has consistently outperformed its direct peer ZENITH and priced @ a seemingly undeserving premium to it. ...and why a stock like NESTLE may not crash in price as some investors might expect. Bottom line: UACN has a far better 'score' ahead of UPDC. So if one where to measure their risk against any expected return, the former makes far more sense to align with. NOTE: The ALTMAN Z-SCORE though a powerful one, is only but one valuation tool. A combination of several key tools to valuation in line with ones investment PERSONALITY is still advised. My take: UACN is a BUY(infact, accumulate) for us !! My advise: Pls kindly follow ur instinct. Enough said !! |

Valueinvestor: You still have to go through a broker with online investing.... I placed the trade myself through my broker platform..what I noticed is that my mandate is not showing on the outstanding order page for all my mandate today... I have a long time view of the stock market and I try to buy good stocks that are selling at a discount to fair value. How ever I have another account with which I play kalokalo on NSE most especially when we have a boring market... UAC--PROP is basically a gambling thing for me.... |

Anyway u can continue. ...It wasn't like I was expecting even a thank u or any appreciation in return. It's especially because of folks like u that I wrote and highlighted the part of the post above.
