rinzaugustine:My school cost about $25k per annum according to the i20. But one can do... Fees $7500 (fixed) Living cost in a shared apartment (variable) ~$350 monthly, $4500 a year Feeding $2000 a year (variable) Misc $2000 a year (variable) Total is about $16k, if it exceeds that amount it wouldn't go beyond $20k but the i20 says $25k. Not having this knowledge is why people delay starting the program sooner. Some people spend less - the school fee is the only fixed cost and the rest depends on the individual. 9 Likes 1 Share |

MackyNaija: Even the school fees is not fixed in places where they charge per credit hour. What you pay depends on how many credit hours you take, but people should bear in mind that they cannot take below 12. |

yemiosinbajo:When I say it's fixed, it means the amount that must be paid to the school - cannot be dodged or reduced. Variable means you can choose to sleep outside for free. It's individual dependent. A certain amount of credit hours is needed for different options - thesis, project or course only but the prices are still very close to each other. Lemme quickly summarize the options as it concerns $$$... 1 Like |

Course only - 12 courses, 36 units. You pay more, but graduation date is sure. No or limited graduate assistantship, the profs will gain nothing from this option research wise. 4 Likes |
Re: Naija to Yankee Thoughts And Experiences by MackyNaija(m): 2:53am On Sep 15, 2019 |
Project option - 11 courses, 30 units + project work. This gives an option of going for an internship as it can be tied to your project work. 4 Likes |

Thesis option - 8 courses + 1 proposal + 1 thesis report. You can go for internships and tie it to your research work. Since you'll work for the prof and produce something useful, they'll offer your waivers and stipends - you go hammer. Your graduation date deh God hand. 5 Likes |

MackyNaija: I understand what you are saying. I'm looking at the fact that you quoted a certain amount as your fees, just as schools would put them out on their cost of attendance breakdown. What I'm saying is that, in some schools (not all schools, maybe your isn't among too), you may end up paying lesser than the fees they put out because many of them base it on 18 credit hours, while you could take lesser. And this is especially common for undergrads. |

Family Attending Your Graduation This one is kinda straight forward.. Your people should target their payment of the $160 -$200 visa fee about 5 months before the date they intend traveling. My mum did it in early January against a May travel date. A friend of mine told me in early September that his mum has only been seeing interview dates of January, the graduation is this December. 5 months in advance would always be a good time. 12 Likes 3 Shares |

Paccus: Everything is school dependent. My school had killed the option of claiming thesis option from the 1St semester, collecting all the goodies associated with it then in the final semester switching back to course only option - your fee account go show all the previous waivers as pending balance. You must pay them back. Research work isn't bad, just have a clear pathway to the end of whatever you are researching on. |

Paccus:I have met someone that schools in Nigeria and know some others that schooled in the U.K and from my experience, having the desired skillset is more important that where you schooled. My school na technically heavy weight, our main 'branch' for C0llege stat1on umbrella cover us - most recruiters cannot tell the difference between the various campuses. They lump us together as one. We also can attend their career fairs. 4 Likes |

Sherlock5577:In this immigration sensitive era, this one go hard but it's not impossible. Recruiters - both does that can different between f1, h1 etc etc And this who cannot differentiate are all shouting 'we do not sponsor at this time'. Na your prof for school go fit link you up, do well academically and pally them. If you have prior work experience in that field, package it properly and you'd stand a chance. 6 Likes |

femora007: A little note on Skills and Further Learning From my experience, an entry level job here requires a bit of working experience - you must have beyond classroom training about the role which is why employers expect you to have interned somewhere. Problem? Internships also require work experience. Where do you get it from? Lemme use my case as an example - * Had some Nigerian work experience but was writing rubbish on my resume. I have since properly packaged my naija experiences and the jobs offers are slowly trickling in. In addition, I added a 'Course Projects' section since my experiences were a little distant from the jobs I am now interested in. E get how you go coin wetin your Prof call 'class assignments' especially those that takes weeks to complete, they'll become course projects. Put several of them and it starts to look like a work experience. * Go to 3dx, c0usera n others and start learning New things both in theory and practical that can be added to your skills section. It is applicable as Skills you now posses. 22 Likes 6 Shares |

* With my school email as a student, I was able to get a Free official AutoCAD, I think a student version with 3 years license. Free official Tabluea for Visualization and Business intelligence with a 1 year license. Official Minitab for data analysis with a 30 days trial, I used it and have been able to include that skill in my resume. Official JMP for data analysis that cost about $1500 for a year license was sold to me for about $50. Does the exact same thing, might just have a few extended capabilities absent. Sql for database management AND Python softwares Free, paid $15 each to learn from one of the best teachers on the web - C0deWithM0sh. The training was in VIDEO form. R for statistical analysis is also free, just find online resources to learn with. Fr33codecamp should suffice. I even did Advanced Excel too. Since I didn't have an ERP software, I used excel for some industrial/manufacturing/Supply chain sturvs. Then... I learned (American spelling for Learnt, gbagaun detectors take note ) GD&T, ppk, cpk, spc, lean six sigma, continuous improvement and a host of others in Theory - All, I add am for resume. Find the buzz words in your field, Learn the skills and add them. As simple as that. After all that, my resume come fat like yok0zuna I ensured I learned all beyond basic. If some recruiters hold you for work, you go regret why you write some kind things for your resume. I packaged myself in a way to be able to function as a Process, Quality, Manufacturing or Industrial engineer. The hustle is real... 36 Likes 9 Shares |

This pattern will work for most engineering disciplines. Most softwares are available in school departments but I prefer to have my personal copies. You cannot fold your hands and refuse to increase your skills, you won't be competitive enough. Employers are looking for fully baked 'trainees' with 1-3 years experience'. 9 Likes 2 Shares |
