Hello Nairalenders,

Please, I need your advice experienced medicine graduates, students and consultants.

I am a 19-year-old medicine (MBBS) aspirant. I have written three jamb and MBBS admission has not come my way.

I applied twice in ui and once in Unilag.
For the unilag admission, I was 11 marks below the cut off mark in 2017.

In 2018, I was 2 marks below the cut off mark in ui.
This year, my aggregate is relatively low.

Now, I need advice on:
1. How to score 340+ in the forthcoming (2020) utme.
2. How to re strategize
3. How to eliminate boredom while reading/preparing.

4. Materials/books I can prepare with.

Also, I'll be glad to learn from your experience.

Thanks in anticipation.

PS: My utme score has always been between 280-318
all this one is long story. Are your parents connected to high people? Can they raise upto 500k if yes. Write jamb, even if you score below 200 carry your connection with the 500k and give the school VC matters closed. Go into medicine and come out with distinction. It doesn't matter the grade you enter with. After all my friend got 190 and doing medicine. Mtcheew

Why can't those marks get an Igbo admission in UNN
That is the obvious truth . i was a victim . it is simply because of the population seeking admission in medicine and surgery. I scored 280 back in 2010 and was denied admission because the cut off mark for catchment area is usually higher base on population.I am Ibo. Unizik tag the cut-off at 284.5

I am a low talker, I will never achieve anything in life, cos I settle for less in everything i do

There's a difference between reality and fantasy. Fantasy is writing the same exam 7 times because you must become a doctor. Pointless rigidity. Which you believe is high talking. LOL.

If you think that reality/logic is low talking, then you are one of the foolish majority in reality. You probably haven't achieved anything with your inflexible mindset.

Why waste a long time fighting for what isn't coming when you can do it in another way? You are too slow to know that he could've read something related. As if being a doctor is the peak of the biological sciences.

First in my school then UNN it was very difficult to get medicine from secondary school
The advice i would give u is based on UNN alone don't know if its valid else where

1) take any coure u are offered ...study it for one year ( year one is a refresh of sec school ) ...us it to prepare for jamp ..your reading habit would increase

2) for UNN change your state of origin to south west or northern states because these state find it easy to enter UNN than igbo states ....if u are from zamfara 240 can get u medicine in UNN , if u are from Ogun 270 can get u

But if u are from Enugu ,Imo or anambra 320 cant even guarantee u medicine

So u can change ur state of origin when u get in u change it back

I can relate with your advice. It is very valid in UNN and UNIZIK. cool. I wasted three years of my life before I discovered this route. During your first year registration, you can change your state of origin back to your default state.

Hey Sir/ma,
Judging from your write-up above, I am sure you will gain admission to study Medicine and Surgery come 2020. From my little experience, you ll need to work a bit harder.

Answer to Question (1)A : You ll need to evaluate your study materials. You can't expect to get 300+ in Jamb if your study textbook is Essential Physics for example. You will need textbooks like Okeke, Nelkon and Parker, One comprehensive Physics which I can't remember, etc.
B: You need to increase your study hours too. Read for longer periods. Be motivated. Just try. You have written Jamb twice so you know what it takes. Just sit down and read more. Keep reading. Honestly, it would pay off.

(2) While preparing for my 2nd JAMB in 2013(I knew I had to do something different from my 1st to get admission to study medicine at U I.
So I registered at the State library. I would leave home with my siblings who were in secondary school at that time and get to the library as early as 8:30am. I had a special corner. I would just sit my a*s down and read. All the books I needed were available at the library. I made a couple of friends whom I shared ideas and knowledge together with. I would say that was one of the best decisions of my life. You could try that too.
(3) The answer to this could be seen in answer(2) above. I made friends at the Library. Often times when I was bored, I would go see my guys and we would talk about a couple of interesting topics. After about some minutes, I ll just get back to my books. However, there a couple of days where after getting to the Library early, I would have to leave after about an hour cos I wouldn't just be in the mood to read. That happened like 1 out of 20days.

(4) I last did Jamb in 2013 so I really don't know if there are better textbooks. Ask your guys who got very high scores. You can check the Jamb curriculum or something too.

P:S Do not let anyone discourage you. You will get in this time. I had a similar experience only that I wrote that twice. I was really determined. Got a low score in my 1st Jamb, chose UNN as 1st and 2nd choice. Didn't get admitted. I was like 'no wahala'
Sat my as* down the 2nd time, read well and had good friends. Chose U.I as 1st choice and Ilorin as 2nd choice. Got admitted to both schools and then accepted U.I's admission.

Finished medical school from U.I this year; July(Still waiting for induction). Everything to the Glory of God.

You should also be aware that Students in the College of medicine in U.I now have to pay quite a lot yearly throughout their study years. We paid #85,000 in 2018, #100,000 in 2019. 2020 could be #150,000 or more. So, make sure you are financially OK before coming to U.I

Cheers

Baba, nah 2012 you write jamb last nah and you enter for 2013.
I'm the all seeing eye and I watch over all of you.

you really need to change tactics .There is a saying that a fool is someone that does the same thing and expect different result.
Let me advice you first in the area or pattern of study. I want you to know that consistency in reading a particular subject is far productive than reading haphazardly even when the accumulated time spent in reading haphazardly supersede the former. Let me shed more light on my initial comment by giving you an analysis or example. Someone who reads biology for 1 hour everyday for six month and has an accumulated time of 1 hr x maybe 184 days =184 hrs is far productive than one who spent an accumulated time of more than 184 hrs but skip the daily routine of reading. I am a living example of this fact. Reminiscing my preparation for jamb back in 2011, my jamb combination were Mathematics, English, Chemistry and Biology . The highest was mathematics(89) and the most annoying fact was that i spent the lowest accumulated time among all the subject except English but i made sure i study daily(i allocated only 45 minutes daily for math for that six month duration) . I even studied mathematics on Christmas day. i didn't miss studying mathematics a day prior to my examination. In general consistency in reading eradicates forgetting.
Still in the area of study, try and cover the whole syllabus . please don't omit one. Study your past question often, usually, i dedicated weekends to study my past question more.
Now in the area of school of choice . Kindly desist from choosing a school in your catchment area because of the competition involve . I will advice you to choose a federal school that is out of your catchments area. Go to federal schools in the north, south-south and south-east since you are from the south-west.
And finally, pray and avoid every form of sexual immorality.

I definitely know how it feels.
To begin, what is your reason for your interest in medicine and surgery? If it is to make money, have a quick job after graduation, or to actualize your parent's dream or peer pressure, you should consider rethinking.
If otherwise, you should bear in mind that getting what one truly wants isn't always easy. Hence, you should devolt more time in studying, praying, attend tutorials and study past questions. Most importantly, why waste your high scores on UI where the demand and competition is high. Seek other schools, especially the ones in your state or zone. Remember, no one would ask about the medical school you attended unless you have done exceedingly well or woefully wrong.
Lastly, accept any other course given to you, have a feel of the university environment and keep applying while in school, even after graduation(Direct entry) if you so wish to become a doctor...
PEACE!!

If we didn't have such a stupid and cumbersome educational system in Nigeria, a brilliant lad like that young man should have been in his third year of college. In the part of the world where I live and work, 12th grade students write only one final exams which determines which tier of universities they would attend (here universities are categorized into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tiers ). There's nothing like the meaningless university matriculation examination we have in Nigeria. Jamb has ruined a lot of dreams in Nigeria. Honestly, I Jamb should be scrapped.

My brother, this is exactly how great people ply their route to success. You may think it's over and may be feeling weak. Please never do.

There are many people with similar experiences and stories as yours. They are now living the dream.

My advice to you is to understand some few things hindering your admission.

In Nigeria,

1. You have failed to realize that connection to the authentic workers of the school can save you from this mess.

Nigeria lives in the womb of corruption and it's so sad, she may never be delivered.

My brother,

Go to that same Unilag, Approach a Medicine and Surgery student, narrate your ordeal to he or she. (She is preferable) tell he/she to lead you to a lecturer or anyone who could help you get admitted there, you'll be amazed to realize that a lesser score this time won't hinder you from being admitted.

Even if you pass the cut off mark, corruption may never let them pick you. In Nigeria, you have to know the horsemen, if you want a good ride.

Nigeria is indeed a bleeped up country.

All the best, brother.

Go to a state university like OSU. The fees can be higher but certainly you'll become a doctor. Unilag, UI, OAU, Ilorin are all overrated and has too many applicants.. Also improve your O'level results to like A1 parallel... It also goes a long way to add to your overall points not just jsmb score.

All the best
