Actually, it's not the amount that's the real issue. There are many products that cost more than #600k. But the issue is which value does it add to me that a #100k phone can't?

I think you get the gist.

Lalasticlala

The same way you are asking what value a 600k phone would add to you that a 100k phone can’t add is the same way someone else would be asking what value a 100k phone would add that a 15k phone can’t add. After all Toyota Corolla and
Lamborghini Urus are both cars that would take you from point A to B, but the price difference is humongous.

Last last it’s all about preference, the value a person placed on phones and the amount of money at that persons disposal.

Then we can rightly say money makes people lose their senses and right judgement?

And we can rightly say that most rich people are foolish spenders?

Based on your statement.
I like your view & point of judgement. Ever wonder why nearly no business or investment outlived the original founder or stay over 50 years. Well, that is the mindset of every average Nigeria. No genuine businessman will buy things because he could afford it for show up & not out of necessity.

my point basically is ,, buying stuffs without having a need other than " it is the latest " doesn't seem smart to me .. If ones reason for having the phone is just to show that one can afford it , I feel it is financial recklessness ..

Because it's not a smart or wise decision to you, does not mean the buyer is not entitled to spend however they desire.......

Your financial recklessness is another's been prudent........

But you, based on your needs and lifestyle, which value will a #600k phone add to you?

We work hard to earn money, so it's rational for us to spend our money on only products/services that (we believe) will add value to our lives.

Yesterday, I heard of a phone that costs #600k. The first question that came to my mind was:

what will I enjoy from this phone that my Google Pixel won't give?

So I decided to throw this question to the house.

How can you rationally justify spending #600k on a phone?

Thanks.
very simple answer: Ego service

Thanks for your contribution bro.
According to you, if I get you right, the fact that you can afford it is enough justification.

I don't believe this is rational. A rational human being spends on what adds value/benefit to his life.

You are actually not different from those you are attacking.
Why are you using a 100K Android phone instead of a 30K phone?
Imagine what that 70K can do in some other people's life.

You may think it is the graphics or processor that attracted you but it is all lies.
You bought that phone to feel good about yourself and that is why other people
bought theirs.

If you own a car, think of the amount you can save by buying the cheapest model that works.
Do you even need a car when most people are getting by with public transport?

Nobody needs a justification for how they spend their money.

With all humility, let me say i live in an advanced Economy with all that is required :basic needs are met by the government and your children are in safe hands and you get paid enough for mere task, medical insurance takes care of the rest. the way and the raves of this so called iphone is making in Nigeria baffles me. Here we do not even talk about it, yet we can get it on instalment . But why is NIGERIANS so carried away with gadgets and the latest technology Why Is it to satisfy some inner urge that tells us we are indeed, poor or what.

This is simple Law of Relativity. As it is rational for you to buy a 'cheap' android phone for #35k and subscribe a data bundle for 'only' #1500 a month, while there are families of 4 or more who live on #5k (food. Water, medicines, transport and all) for a whole month.
You could eat in a "cheap" restaurant for #500 a plate while there a families who make a pot of soup with #300 and it will last them 1week.
Some guy stay for 2months or more in a Dubai hotel costing $20k per night. $20k will build me a bungalow in my village and buy me a tokunbo toyota camry 2003 model. But someone spends that in one night!
The maintainance cost of Roman Abramovich's Yacht per annum is more than the anual budget of lagos state.
So I conclude that Life is all about spending in relation to what one has and what one prioritizes. End of story.

If Iphone was priced 6000 Naira some people won't buy and Apple would run at a lost, company like Apple are in the exclusive market which is high brand luxury item.In terms of rationality I can tell you there is rationality in getting one,I remember trying to close a deal some month ago with my partner, the young chap I was negotiating with had an iPhone as well as the watch, unfortunately I quietly have to stylishly remove my infinix from the table to avoid story that touch, because I don't want to create the wrong perception that I don't have the financial capabilities to close the deal.

How much is your salary? It depends on the person. Some can use three months or four months salary to buy a phone. Knowing fully well that without the salary for those months, they would still pay all their bills, food, clothing, rent, transport etc.

It was this type of thinking that got muritala assassinated, today every Nigerian cries that senators and even lg chairmen are busy buying fortified g-class and armoured Amg's, these phones are not meant for you therefore the marketers do not target you hence your rational reasoning.........The people these phones are meant for change them every 18 months ....every other person using such phones are wannabes

Thanks. It's someone that hasn't used Samsung, IPhone that would compare it to Tecno or Infinix. The difference is clear

When money to purchase is not a limitation, you decide the end of that line............

When you have no money, your pocket would draw the line for you.......
when u have a huge amount of money , yes u can afford curiosity , ( now as a need ) u just want to know what the phone is about ( is not about am using the latest ).. that's why u realise that people on this class easily give their expensive stuffs out , because they really don't need them , they just satisfied curiosity because they can afford it .. But what is the justification for an average earner who buys this stuffs just because it is the latest ..(" yea am a baller , I use the latest things "wink there will always be a latest thing ..

Foolishness does have any rational justification as you can see from the responses on this thread.

If you understand the time value of money and how compound interest works, you will not waste your money on frivolities or be a victim of corporations that want to get your hard-earned coin.

Even Americans are waking up to the realization that the iPhone is a big scam but for our brain dead youth, it's not yet dawn.
What would you do with the compound interest when you are old and wrinkled?
Start building statutes?

No American with a job would even think twice before buying an iPhone.
You are judging them by our 30K minimum wage.

African reasoning.

If dangote buys that kind of phone will u call him irrational?

U choose to give ur money to charity because u derive a kind of satisfaction and self fulfilment from it not because u owe anybody a charity obligation (U owe nobody explanation on what u derive from charity).

I choose to spend my money on a luxury item and properties because i can afford it and still have more than enough. I buy luxury because it gives me a sense of self fulfilment and satisfaction (I owe nobody explanation on this).

Rationality is subjective, what is rational to u may not be rational to me and thats why we are humans.

Nobody owes nobody explanation on how they spend their money. I spend my money on what i deem fit not what any1 else deems fit for me cow u didn't make d money for me. [/quote]

I have told you the rationale: Ego service! isn't that enough rationale!? you might want to add vainglory....I haven't seen any president use this kind of phone. Dangote or Otedola themselves don't at the least carry it. except for their opportunist children that would have been poor assess if they had been birthed by another.
*plus, resale value after years is poor. it diminishes drastically.
* it attracts undue attention to one, from robbers and materialistic, shallow ladies and companions. people that would leave you as soon as u can't flaunt such things again.
* finally, I want to point out to you that I barely have such amount anywhere, so I might not really know what I am talking about.

Not just in some people's lives, even in our everyday lives. Do you know how many bags of rice that money will buy for you?? Fuel for transport nko?? That money pays at least 2-3 months rent in some places in Nigeria. How many months bills that money can easily settle. That money is a lot to give to a phone manufacturer if we are to go quid pro quo
