My dear, there are many things the 600k phone can do that your 100k phone can't do. Anything that makes one happy, the person should go for it. What shall it profit a man to make enough money and not spend it on himself.

Hmmmm......can't believe this.

The same way I will rationally justify having hundreds of millions of naira in my account. Ppl that buys it do so because they can afford it not because they want to justify anything, a phone is a phone, it can't build house or teleport you to another country! It's simply a phone, or best called a smartphone.

Show bro! its all for show and optics. Why do you think people whose job ensure they interact with the general public on the daily get paid wardrobe allowance? An o.losho with a price tag of say 5k can confidently demand 500k as far as she's using Apple's 11.

Give or take, that 600k is like an investment to some people out there, because it will instantly give them more clout and project affluence... remember, money (even if na audio) attracts money; the poor will always happily give to the rich (or seemingly rich).. sad, but thats the way it is...

And besides, these days, phones are a lot more than just phones. They are accessories we now consider more fashionable than other fashion accessories like gold... now, rationalise why someone will shell out N10m for example on a ring?

I like your view & point of judgement. Ever wonder why nearly no business or investment outlived the original founder or stay over 50 years. Well, that is the mindset of every average Nigeria. No genuine businessman will buy things because he could afford it for show up & not out of necessity.

You're very right. Your point is the same reason why businesses that thrived for decades in Nigeria began to dwindle & eventually go under when the founders of such businesses handed over to their children to manage. The children who are more frivolous in spending ran the business aground. We have many examples here in Nigeria.

Their irrational spending can build a nation or wipe out poverty from probably some states in Nigeria

Check out their luxury houses, yatch, cars, expensive arts and decor, you go bow

They do these things because; they can afford it and not because it’s necessary

I met a guy once who bought iPhone 6 and blackberry Porsche as at the time it was released, two of the most expensive publicly sold phones as at then, the guy’s statement was, he always loved gadgets, and now he thanks God he could afford to go for the best... the guy was/is making cool money, owns a Nigerian restaurant abroad and some other businesses

When better money touch your hand rationalities would fly out the window

Well, you got a point there though cos there are things people in the high income brackets go for that the low income earners will call luxury. Bottom line is, taste determines rationality.

Na only Nigeria dem dey celebrate buying an iPhone

You really spoke my mind! I think much of it have to do with the poverty mentality of an average Nigerians. Here in North America (US & Canada) nobody cares what kind of smart phone you possess. Nobody worship you because you are using the latest iPhone. There are other very expensive phones some of us are using but we don't make noise about it. If you are in Nigeria and can afford 600k to get the iphone, get it but please dont use it to intimidate your fellow country men. I know some ladies who have already made up their mind to sleep with countless men in order to raise 600k for the latest iPhone, while some guys are already scheming for whom to scam to raise 600k for iPhone.

Those that buy it earn tons of money. It's their choice to buy whatever they want cos they can afford it and still be okay. While those who earn little and still save to buy the phone buys it to attract rich people. Its all packaging. No matter how broke you are, present your self well in order to attract favour.

But how does the phone reach 600k. 999£ not the starting price again.

Wait how can I use my own hand to work for 365 days. And after all I will now remove 500k to buy a phone whereby next year I would want to change the phone again. Are these people not tired of data migration

And nobody shu quote me and be saying I haven’t reach there. Hasn’t Dangote too reach

Dangote still dey find money na!!

First, mashable is not a forum, it is a blog.

Second, you couldn't even read your own link to see that the dip in sales
was primarily due to economies in emerging market and China's problem.
I bet you didn't even see some customers protesting changes in iPhone design
because you were too lazy to read.

Only ghetto dwellers would complain about iPhone being expensive.

You really don't have anything to say oga. Explain to him what he wants to know, you that you have reached the stage, what value do you derive that can justify splurging 600 thousand naira on a mere phone? And you are asking him to wait. What if he never gets to that point at all? Half smart ppl thinking they know all.
How is it your business how he spends his money?
I hope the phone you are using is not more than 15K because that would make
you the worst hypocrite on this forum.
There are 10K phones that can browse, yet you bought an expensive one.
How many people have you explained your reasons to?

The maintainance cost of Roman Abramovich's Yacht per annum is more than the anual budget of lagos state.

Abrahamovic bought his Yatch for $700,000,000. https://www.superyachtfan.com/superyacht_eclipse.html

As for his maintenance costs per year, that's €30M

Lagos state annual budget is $2.3B

You are thinking from the perspective of existence rather than living
and that is a rather poor state to be in.

Since you have been harping on the word "value", I hope you realize that
it is not some dollar or naira metrics you derive from an action. It is whatever
you believe derive from it.

Expensive vacations, religious pilgrimage, and a 600K iPhone all make sense to
those who can afford it.

I once flew to see a long-time friend when he was close by. It did improve my life in my
own way. From your perspective, I had wasted money that could have been used
for "better" things.

Can you honestly say that there are no phones 20K or 30K cheaper that provide similar value as your google pixel?

Is it really a sound decision to spend a 3 month plus minimum wage on a phone regardless of how much you are worth?

The same way you are asking what value a 600k phone would add to you that a 100k phone can’t add is the same way someone else would be asking what value a 100k phone would add that a 15k phone can’t add. After all Toyota Corolla and
Lamborghini Urus are both cars that would take you from point A to B, but the price difference is humongous.

Last last it’s all about preference, the value a person placed on phones and the amount of money at that persons disposal.

pocohantas:

Succintly put!

This is false equivalence

a 15K phone won't have 4g for one, won't have a good RAM to open more than 2 apps at once without reloading. the camera would probably have grains and can't capture properly

whereas what OP is asking is what his own phone isn't capable of doing that an iPhone could and I'm yet to hear a good answer to such.

thTS NOT THE POINT, THE POINT IS how empty and shallow do you have to be to migrate all your data and information collected in one phone into a new one ? as far as i am concerned this getting new phones is for empty barrels. real business men have so much contacts and investment portfolios in their phones that they can never change it because the information in it is valuable. most billionaires still use iphone4

My comment was based on 600k. But have you also heard that at the press of a button everything on your old phone comes to the new phone. Yes everything including call logs and text messages.

If you have the means then it's justified; but if you don't enjoy the same features from other phones you can afford. Phones don't increase your life span so go easy on the trends.

I have been buying all the samsung notes from note 5 till the recent note 10+.
First, what I get is not what you can get on the Samsung galaxy duos. 8GB ram and 256GB rom with a reasonable processor. Certain features like samsung whiz ,samsung dock, Advanced NFC etc cant be packed into a 80k phone. Coupled with its compatibility in any where I find myself accross the globe.
Why do people buy BMW 7 series when they can make do with 1992 Honda bullet.. se u get now?
