Here, the tenant is the boss. It's just bonkers paying a one year or a two year rent. If a landlord steps the line in Kenya you just take him/her to the rent tribunal. It seems your housing market is dominated by cartels who care less about the common man!

I feel pity for ordinary citizens. it is possible to effect the law when you become a tenant but once you are still looking for roof over your head, be ready to be humble.

currently, this kind of billing is commonly find in Accra and maybe Takoradi( but not so common). A new employee is expected to be savvy of the system. well it is easy for you, if you grow up in Accra, majority knows their way.

it is normal you see the landlord complaining. of the high cost of land, building materials and Accra, being the Capital as the major factor.

The ones furnished is more expensive. that might go for 200 dollar or 150 less. depending on the area.. A house for average of 50 dollars is expected to be paid in two years or one year term depending on the landlord agreement .

whats the fuss about paying monthly? I reckon it could be greed (in Nigeria) but Ghanaians have never struck me as greedy. Or do tenants tend to run away without paying?

The problem is the last guy. The rest have to be on the lookout in case he wants to disappear after 11 free months

Protectionism, it might be the case. It's like banks refusing to lend to low income earners because they are risky to lend to.
