I earlier sent a nomination request to mining and materials engineering department at McGill. The department just sent an email that I need to have a conditional admission first before requesting for nomination. I thought it was nomination before admission.

Yeah it's nomination before admission, although I don't know it all because even some department request for an english proficiency result ielts or toefl which was not part of the documents to be sent as listed by mfs, so to say departments av different rules guiding the nomination process .or may be u didn't emphasized that you needed a nomination for MasterCard foundation scholarship. Also hope mining is part of the listed courses? If yes,
I will advise you to write her back an explain to her that you are applying through mfs in which if nominated the application fee will be waived an all others
Subject of the mail: departmental nomination for MasterCard foundation scholarship. So if they reply wit the same message then it's ur decision.

You can apply to different schools and courses too. Even two courses within a university.

Hi bro..all you have to do is just to apply through the link provided it's process is different from McGill application but u av to write some essay during the application.

I woke up today and I noticed a lot of unread messages in my inbox, most of them were along the lines of "can you tell me about the MCF scholarship at the university of Edinburgh?", "can you put me through in the application process? Do you think I can get in given my GPA?" etc. This is expected given that the application portal for the Mastercard Foundation at the University of Edinburgh opened just a few days ago. Many that know me personally would by now be familiar with my punchline of "The MasterCard Scholarship - especially the one at the University of Edinburgh - is one of the best scholarship programs in the world". The main aim of writing this post is so that I can automate the question answering process. I think this is better than having to respond to everyone each time. Before I start, this is not the official FAQ about the scholarship. If you are yet to see the official one, look no further

Below are answers to some questions I have been receiving in the past few days, which I tagged the "unofficial" FAQs about the scholarship. Note that this is my experience with the Postgraduate Scholarship, it could work for the undergraduate application too, but I'd never know.

I graduated with a lower grade (say, a second class lower), what are my chances of bagging the scholarship?: Well, that is sort-of a trick question because you wouldn't know until you apply. From my experience there is usually an initial screening exercise where your application is assessed before you are eligible to proceed with the application.
What can you share with me concerning the structure of the essays? : Well I will share a few expo on the structure here. From my experience, the essay questions are divided into the following subcategories: personality, future aspirations, current situation, and career/wider benefits. In terms of personality, I would believe they want to know what kind of person you are and what traits you exhibit and how this aligns with the aim of the scholarship. Are you a super curious person? do you have the capacity to influence your community after the scholarship? Aim to come off strong here and come up with a convincing paragraph that shows who you are. For the future aspirations part, what this asks you to explain is what your projections are into the future in terms of your ambitions. What do you want to do after the scholarship? how do you aim to impact your community? Many people get it wrong here because they go super generic. Some on the other hand make some impractical and unconvincing points. Aim to hit the nail on the head and don't be unrealistic. For the bit on your current situation: the idea here is to understand your financial situation. How have you been able to overcome challenges in life despite your financial situation? Don't go tangential, focus on the prompt and you will be fine. On career/wider benefits, this in my opinion is the most important part of the essay. Take caution here, I have read several essays where people say stuffs like: I will contribute to the energy sector in Nigeria upon getting back to Nigeria. How? and in what position will you do this? what will you have developed to do this? Be specific and once again be realistic. Always remember that the people that read your essays are well connected to Africa and know how easy or difficult it is to implement the fancy things you say you aim to do.
The last question is a bit controversial, can you share your essays with me to give me an idea on how to write mine? : Well, I would not do that, firstly because it is not ethical and secondly because the points I made in my essays are specific to my case - they are my story. I could do that but if I did, I will indirectly be making you tell my story or have you tell your story but have it staged in my plot. I will believe that by now, having read the FAQ #2 you will be able to write those essays and nail it. The thing I can however do (if I have some spare time) is to help you dot the I's and cross the T's in your essays. Well, https://www.grammarly.com even does that these days, but maybe if it misses some things - a robot always does, LOL.

I just noticed something, one of the procedure for the McGill application is submission of sponsor's letter and bank statement. Is it that this one is just fee waiver and not fully funded scholarship like that of uni Edinburg. Pls I need clarification

You don't need that, at least for now.

Firstly, to start the application process, you've to be nominated by the department you intend applying to.

Send an email (attaching your CV, Transcript and personal statement) to the programme coordinator of your department (You can check the school's website for his/her name, or check via Google) stating you want to be nominated by the department for the MasterCard scholarship programme.

Note: Your desired course must be among the list of eligible courses up for scholarship for the current year.

Note: This nomination process takes time, at times 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your department.

It's after you've been nominated by your department you can then proceed with your application.

If one is not nominated by his/her department, then, there's no need applying, because he/she won't be considered.

I guess this should be enough.

You've to apply directly for the scholarship.

You can only get in contact with the school if you've an alternative source of funding.

But it's depends on the department you are applying to..just make enquires from the dept coordinators they have different criteria for the nomination process.
For example I mailed dept A with the stated documents but they insisted that i needed to submit an English proficiency examination ielts or toefl thou English proficiency letter from my university was later accepted when I contacted drhammed for some tips
I mailed dept b, they require you apply to the school 1st even though you are seeking for a nomination from them so different department with different requirements all u have to do is to mail the grad coord for their requirements because each dept has their own principle

I have submitted, I had to contact their IT help service. In my essay I used some key letters that the system was rejecting

Is there any whatsapp group for uni Edinburgh applicants. I applied for Msc Sustainable En Systems. And for when is the usual period of selection and interview?

For those who have done it before, what is the interview like? Do they ask technical questions or just general interview questions.
