True...menial jobs abound. No one is saying we shouldn't sweep carpets or scrub chimneys...it's just that if even after getting a PhD and written loads of publications one can't get a job tailored in his field at a whim despite efforts put in (time and moneywise) then Its ghastly disappointing for that quality education without networking. Moreso disappointing to see the system is deliberately putting that get a job in your field in 18months.

I know IT dude's are hotcake but even that is beside the point.

If I tell you stories that I heard in the past of how African students were pampered by the university,but they messed up. We are the ones now suffering for their sins,on top of prevalent racism. This is why we are pushing to change the narrative that black African students are useless. How can a student be receiving 500euros monthly,and still refuse to go to class? Then,when the system retaliate,people will be shouting racism!

Make everybody use him head in order not to spoil the chances of those coming behind them! Nigeria don cast,and is now Buhari's cowlony. Any opportunity to learn new skills that comes to you,grab it by the balls and squeeze the hell out of it!

Living here and with what I've experienced, I know people who study courses that aren't lucrative find it hard to get a job here after studying.

And you don't necessarily need networking to get a job here tbh.

I personally know a PhD student, who has a job waiting for him after his PhD and he doesn't know how to speak German. And no he's not in the IT field. And his publication isn't even out yet.

If you do the right thing, you can get a job in 18 months. By doing the right thing, I mean studying the right course, learning German and having good grades!.

The only few people I know who had a hard time here getting a job after studying are those who who don't know how to speak German.

If you study some courses, you don't necessarily need to know the German language. People in IT can get a job without knowing how to say 'hello' in German.

I hardly know anyone who studied here who isn't doing well in their field. It isn't all that rosy though .


And that's why it's good to always research before studying any course here, some courses aren't just lucrative in DE. Apply to study in big cities, where getting a job wouldn't be difficult. Don't just apply to any city for the sake of studying here. I'm saying this cause I have a friend who lives in a big city and she made three thousand euros a month after tax working during the holidays. And she made this while doing the so called 'menial jobs'. And oh, she doesn't know how to speak German .


I hate when people talk about menial jobs as if it's a bad thing to do. If after graduating and one couldn't find a job or needs to learn German, what's wrong in doing a menial job for the time being?.

Most Nigerians here do menial jobs and it's a fact, I don't see anything wrong with it . Nigerian students or even German students themselves do menial jobs while still studying till they are ready to work in their field.

If you are not ready to do a menial job at least for once, then Germany isn't for you, sorry!. These menial jobs have enabled men to bring over their wives and children to Germany, so you can't tell me nothing!.

If you're coming towards Berlin area, make sure to sort your accommodation before you come for soft landing because
accommodation isn't easy to get here.

In the last two months, I have been in Huelva, Spain, Grenoble,France,Aalto, Finland, Leuven, Belgium and just returned from the EIT Alumni Meeting at Budapest,Hungary,all paid for by the European Union. Just google the cost of a night at Barcelo Budapest! Other Nigerian and Benin Republic students were there too.

It was all due to networking,and not because of anything spectacular about my grades!

If you are from arts or social sciences, then you have to prepare to go the extra mile to achieve your German dream, because you have German natives and other EU graduates jostling for the same job with you.
From my exeperience, there is what they call "Mangelberuf", = "understaffed profession, if you course does not fall into this category, you are will be at the bottom of the food chain.

Some people have already explained the basic facts we need. Getting job is all about God favour but then your course is also something to consider, that's why its better to start from your B.sc in Deutschland.

I know a Cameroonian who got a job with the almighty AIRBUS immediately after his B.sc at HAW, all the fact is that you should do more research.

Do you know about propadeütikum? its not all about your studies, as you said, one also need skills.

Again, my cousin graduated from the same school with his friend marshal. Marshall got his job barely 3month after graduation with almighty BMW as automobile engineer with start pay of €4060 per month. My cousin who studied international journalism and politics only got a small job with a news paper company as a journalist earning less than 2500€ after tax. This was to get an experience. He took a study leave and went for masters upon graduation, he got a job with Deutsche welle (German biggest broadcasting firm) he also got an offer from two firms In Austria.

I personally came to study and I did not work throughout my first semester; concentrated on learning German and studies, and I can say that I completed 37.5 credits with good grades last semester as well as a reasonable level of German now (I start B1 next week). So please, in as much as there are exceptions, many people do not come here to "make it big", at least not while they/we are still students...

And how will a graduate of history (or was it philosophy) know details of other sectors (z.B., the IT sector)? I have a very good friend, also a Nigerian, who finished from my program and got a job less than 3 months later, with no knowledge of German (I still yab him till tomorrow how he lived in Germany for 3 years without learning the language) in Kiel, a relatively hard-life-without-German city. Chemnitz is just a calm and cheap city. Gets hot when the citizens feel uncomfortable.

For student life based on job; you have high chances of getting a 450€ job easily if you don't have German knowledge. If you are well skilled in IT and based on your course you can get a werkstudent position in some companies around. Sometimes people get lucky with their lecturers and get a student assistant position. Other jobs are in close by cities like the state capital(dresden) and leipzig.

For student life based on activities;
You will meet nice and friendly people but also you'll meet few hostile ones. Based on your personality you can never be bored because the Nigerian guys here organise activities occasionally. Most times(when not exam period) they gather in school field to play ball and laugh away boredom.

For student life based on school work;
The same as other cities.

For student life based on expenses;
It depends on your spending habit but apart from monthly dorm fee which is within 170 - 260€, health insurance 92€(TK) and radio fee 17€, a 70€ visit to penny or edeka for food stuff should take you a through the month. Addition expenses come ones in a while.

On getting a job, I am sure you will find one. But if you are thinking of a Research Assistant job, that will depend on your supervisor if he/she wants to hire you. For the most part, students on an MA program usually have jobs outside the university. The jobs are there, and foreign students are not barred from working.

The city of Bayreuth is small, compared to big cities like Berlin, Dortmund, Munich, etc. But it is peaceful and the people are receptive to strangers (for those who are law-abiding). So far, I have not had any cases of harassment from anyone or the Police. The standard of living in the city is also ok, house rent is also cheaper compared to bigger cities. You can acculturate better depending on your own social life.

Unlike PhD candidates who are registered for automatic apartment, getting accommodation for MA students can be hard at first. Yet, with time (at least between 1-4weeks), you will surely get it depending on your budget.

The other information I could give you is to connect with other Nigerians in the city on MA programs. They are more likely to guide you better on getting accommodation and Jobs in the city, because they went through these experiences.

On your accommodation, if you have registered with the studentenwerk, then no problem. That is the first step. You are going to get accommodation from them, although it might not be easy to get it on time depending on other factors. If your budget is around 180-240Eur for the apartment, it is ok. You will find one in that range (mind you, be ready for other expenses like water, electricity and internet bills. Depending on what you consumed per month, and the fee you will pay for the apartment, you should not be paying more than 230 in the 'cheapest' flat for students. Again, this amount is subject to your monthly consumption).

With regards to the job, as I said earlier, you will get it...
