Hello everyone,
I have been going through this since 2009, asking questions about the equivalence of HND In US, this and that, but unfortunately I couldn't find a reliable answer, till February 2012, and I thought of sharing it cos I believe other are out there like I was before.

First I would like to start by saying. YES!!!! NIGERIAN HND IS EQUIVALENT TO A US BACHELOR DEGREE. Am sure of what am saying because my HND transcripts (that's both my ND & HND) were evaluated as an American bachelors degree.

I would also like to tell you that working or getting admitted into American colleges is based on American qualifications and grades, so to work or get admission into American colleges, first try and get your certificate, diploma, degree or whatever you hold into American equivalence, and you can do that by sending your transcripts to one of the evaluation agencies, WES (world Education Services) http://www.wes.org/ is accepted by almost all American colleges but you can still find out more at http://www.naces.org/members.htm

For more guidelines on how to get to admission into American College with a HND a brother has helped out on his blog, and you can check it out here http://www.farooqkperogi.com/2009/12/hnd-and-american-universities.html and http://www.farooqkperogi.com/2009/03/looking-at-american-education-with_382.html

I would like to share my experience: I graduated with a HND in Electronics Engineering in 2009 from a Nigerian Federal Polytechnic, and sent my transcript to World Education Services WES on October 2011, I paid $202 for the service, the evaluation is supposed to be completed in 7days once all my documents are received, but we all know our 9ja na, considering the fact that the country was in crises it took me 3months to get my transcript to WES, again early JAN 2012 WES sent back another copy to FED POLY, for verification, and at the time our beloved nation is on strike due to subsidy matter and boko haram wahala, till 1st feb 2012, that's when WES got a feed back and my application became complete, on 8th Feb, 2012, my evaluation was complete.

I graduate in Nigeria with 3.14 out of 4.0 CGPA, which is of course our Upper Credit as we call it. But to my surprise from the evaluation my GPA was high to 3.56 out 4.0, that is based on the American System, moreover, in US they use a system of Credit Hours to determine your qualification, and in other to have a US bachelor degree, you must at-least have a minimum of 120 Credit Hours, but from my evaluation I had 135 Credit Hours, which is almost more-than that of the US. And as am typing this I have already applied to one of the top 15 engineering and technology university in the world for my masters program with a HND, and they have assured me that I would get it, after all am having a 3.56 GPA, and a good GRE score (GRE is an exams u sit for before applying for most graduate programs in US, its just like GMAT).
But still there are some few things you should be aware of, just because your transcripts are equivalent to a US degree, doesn't mean you will not take undergraduate courses, yes you will automatically be enrolled to a masters degree, as far as you meet the requirements, but there are some certain courses that you must take which of course are undergraduate courses, and the reason is because those courses are expected by all American graduates and in other to be one, you must go through it, such courses are like those related to the American policies, government, etc. (I haven't reached that stage, am just telling you based on what the school I applied for feed me too).

So to all those who keep asking, what is the equivalence of HND in US, its equivalent to a BACHELOR DEGREE smiley but you really need to make good grades in your HND before you have something of worth, because I don't think there is any American University that would give you masters program with a minimum of 3.0GPA, U might get a provisional admission with a minimum of 2.5GPA (This is based on my reasoning, and what I have been going through, so just look out, cos I might be wrong)

If you need any proof regarding this, or guidelines don't hesitate to tell me or reply me, I promise i would help if I can, cos few years ago, I was once in the same point.

Cheers!
smiley
Good morning Boss. Please, how do I start with the evaluations? What's the first step to take? Please, I won't mind if you do me the favour of me taking your number so I can reach you and get info on several steps to take. Thanks Boss.

Fellow Friends;

Take Time to go through my reply about this thread:

Without mincing words, we cannot claim the ignorance of how the western world respect, honour, accept and revere our dignified Higher National Diploma. Our ND & HND certificate and curriculum is highly acceptable for higher degree admission. For most of the us who are myopic about the curriculum which we covered in our NBTE accredited National Diploma & Higher National Diploma program. It may surprise most of you who will read this thread to know that what you studied in your ND & HND curriculum is far higher than the required credit for a BS degree program.

My Story:

I studied ND & HND Chemical Engineering from IMT Enugu; and a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) Piping Design & Engineering from MIT Pune India. Believe it or leave it. I apply for credential evaluation to World Education Service (WES) - New York USA in June 16, 2012. WES requested for the Transcripts to be sent directly from the Issuing Institution from Nigeria & India respectively. The Indian School sent their directly and it was honoured. I complete the required documentation for student from Nigeria, but they request for further verification from IMT Enugu Nigeria. IMT Enugu Nigeria, replied to their letter together with another copy of my ND & HND Transcript in the last week of February 2013. Then WES promised me that my evaluation will be ready on 7th March 2013. I guessed because of the weekend, the Evaluation - Course By Course Report from WES actually came out on 11th March 2013.

You will be amazed with what am about to reveal to you from the NBTE accredited curriculum ND & HND Chemical Engineering from IMT Enugu Nigeria.

This is it:

WES EVALUATION TERMS
Evaluation Scope: World Education Services (WES) evaluates only formal educational credentials. WES does not evaluate professional experience. WES evaluations are based upon the best information and resources available to professional evaluators. WES evaluations are offered as non-binding advisory opinions.
Accredited Institution: The status of a nationally recognized institution in another country is comparable to that of a regionally accredited institution in the United States.
Credential Authentication: Evaluations prepared by WES specify the manner in which each document was authenticated. The method used depends on what is appropriate for the specific country and level of education. WES authenticates academic records by one of the following methods.
• by requiring that official transcripts be sent to WES directly by the institutions or examination bodies that issued them;
OR
• by requiring that official transcripts be authenticated by the relevant government authority (e.g. Ministry of Education) before being sent directly to WES;
OR
• by verifying documents submitted by individuals by sending them back to the institutions/examination bodies that issued them and obtaining a written confirmation of their authenticity.
Detailed country-by-country document requirements can be viewed at www.wes.org/required/index.asp
Grades/ Quality Points: WES uses an alphabetic system to identify grades. The standard WES conversion of letter grades into a numerical scale/quality points is as follows: A = 4.00; A-=3.67; B+ = 3.33; B = 3.00; B- = 2.67; C+ = 2.33; C = 2.00; C- = 1.67; D+ = 1.33; D = 1.00; F = 0
• “F*” indicates a course that was failed initially, but passed on a subsequent attempt. It is not included in the GPA calculation.
• “Pass” is not included in the Cumulative Grade Point Average. For study completed at the undergraduate level, it corresponds to at least a “C” in the United States. For graduate and professional study, “Pass” corresponds to at least a “B”.
Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by multiplying the credits per course by the quality points for the grade for that course, repeating this procedure for each course, totaling the credit hour quality points thus obtained, and dividing by the total number of credits.
Course Level Designation: The designation “U” (upper) or “L” (lower) against a course at the undergraduate level is an indication of its level.
Credit Recognition and Transfer: The course-by-course analysis represents a breakdown of post-secondary study in terms of U.S. semester credits and grade equivalents. The number of credits accepted for transfer to a degree program or towards a professional license in the United States may vary from those listed in this report in accordance with the policies of the receiving educational institution or professional agency.
Evaluations for Professional Licensing/Certification: WES does not assess professional aptitude or experience. Only authorities qualified in the profession can determine whether an individual meets requirements for licensing or to practice the profession in the United States.

Matters Arising from the WES Evaluation:

In the US, a bachelors degree is completed in 4 years and as a BS degree student you are expected to earn/accumulate 120 credit points. But from my WES Evaluation, the combined years of studies for ND & HND is 5 years. From my ND & HND curriculum in Chemical Engineering from IMT Enugu, Nigeria, instead of accumulating just 120 credits, I earned/accumulated 184 credit. (Please bear in mind that in the USA, in an MS degree, you are expected to earn just 36 credits, which if you compare with my ND & HND curriculum, you can see that I earned extra 64 credit more than a BS degree).
Also, in IMT Enugu, my ND CGPA is 3.41/4.00; and HND CGPA is 3.40/4.00. From the overall WES evaluation, my overall CGPA is 3.76/4.00.

So from the foregoing, I think that with all the threads that I have read about HND & BSc dichotomy in Nigeria, I think that if you have graduated with a HND from a Polytechnic or Monotechnic, strive for a US degree, and save yourself of unnecessary anxiety and disrespect from our BS degree counterpart.

Presently, am preparing to apply for an online MS in Engineering from a Nationally accredited university in the USA.

Note: WES Evaluation has made more proud about my HND & ND in Chemical Engineering. I will be monitoring this thread to know your comments and provide further detailed information.

Please has anybody requested for transcript from Auchipoly? Please i need contact number of the verification officer. Wes has sent my credentials for verification for over three weeks now yet it has not been verified.
Please help. Thanks

Re: What Is The Hnd Equivalent In Usa by Lilymatty(f): 5:14pm On Jan 27, 2019
GNwafor:
First, create an account on wes.org, and choose: "Course-by-Course Report", if you are planning to stay in the USA after graduating, add "ICAP" to the Credential Evaluation. Pay WES the necessary fees online with your Mastercard or Visa card. Then;

Download the "International Transcript Request Form" and print 2 copies.

Go to the 2 different schools, tell them that you need to send your transcripts to an Organization in the USA - WES. The address to use for the Transcript is boldly written on the "International Transcript Request Form"

Make sure you submit 1 copy of the "International Transcript Request Form" each to the 2 schools, Fill part A of the form and inform them that whoever is going to sign the Transcript MUST fill, sign and stamp Part B of the form.

Follow the procedure to get transcripts from each of the schools.

Read the all the posts to get a clear roadmap/instructions to follow.

Then, the schools will send the transcript to WES.

Pls sir, if i want to take GRE test, how do i embark on that? How many years does it last before expiration

This isnt the right thread for this, but:

GRE scores are valid for 5 Years

https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/faq/

You may actually create an account online with ETS in order to take the GRE Test (ETS owns and administers the GRE exam). When you create the account, you can use it to locate a test center and schedule your test and pay for it, view your scores after exam etc.

https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register/your_ets_account

Read through information on the https://www.ets.org/gre/ website and get more familiar with the process

For most you on this Nairaland thread, you guys need to know that the type of questions you post is used to gauge your intelligence.

For me, I figured out the WES Credential Evaluation for USA Graduate Education myself. I have been very generous to share a lot of information on the "process".

If you are a student, you MUST follow processes and procedures.

Key points you need to know:

1. If you have HND in any course in Nigeria, note that your HND is equivalent to a USA Bachelors degree. All is needed for you is to do a credential evaluation to convert your HND grades into USA grade report and the organization issues you an evaluation report stating that your HND is equivalent to a USA Bachelors degree with an equivalent GPA in the USA grading system. The evaluation organization is not converting your HND to a degree, rather they are stating that the number credits you earned while studying for your HND is equal to or greater than 120 credits which is what is required to earn a Bachelors degree in USA. The evaluation organization understands that HND is a 5year program in Nigeria - 2years ND, 1year Internship (Industrial Training - IT), and 2years HND.
For example, if you look up where I posted my Credential Evaluation Report, you will notice that the total number of credits I earned in the 5years HND program in Chemical Engineering at IMT Enugu Nigeria is 184, that is total credits in ND plus total credits in HND.

2. WES is the most respected Credential Evaluation Organization in the USA because they are the original members that formed NACES in 1987. And I advice any Nigerian planning for graduate education in the USA to use them.

3. Because they are very highly respected, their verification process is VERY thorough. So don't expect just to send your documents to them, and the next day you will see the report. It is NOT possible!

4. Because of the Nigerians' questionable credibility which is evident in all spheres of human endeavor, they have even made the verification process more thorough. From the 1st of August 2018, every new applicant from NIGERIA MUST also send WAEC original Certificate for verification, and they will send it back to WAEC Office in Yaba to verify. This same goes for your Transcript, once it is sent to them, they will photocopy it and send it back to your School Registrar to verify that the Transcript actually came from them. It is because of this thorough process that everybody is complaining. In fact with the mad rush of Nigerians going to Canada, a lot Nigerians are forging a lot of Certificate, and once you send it to WES either in USA or Canada, and your school replied that you NEVER studied here, they will blacklist you and share your details with all other Government and allied agencies in USA and Canada. When I did mine in 2012, I paid then, and sent a photocopy of my HND and ND Certificates, and IMT sent the Transcript to them, WES sent back the photocopies of my HND & ND Certificate together with the Transcript back to IMT Registrar, it took IMT Enugu almost 7 to 8 months to reply to the verification request. That is Nigeria method for you.

5. Wes.org has all the answers to ALL your questions, including the cost of the evaluation and postage fee. If dont have a PO Box, I advise you to choose International courier, you will have to pay higher and they will send you a copy of the evaluation report by FedEx. Note you will be paying with your Naira Mastercard or Visa Card.

6. If you are a student planning for graduate education in the USA, I will advice you to choose the ICAP services in addition to your Course-by-Course Report. This is a special service that enables WES store your Transcript, HND certificate + the Credential Evaluation Report for life. This will help in the future assuming you start looking for job in the USA which always the case, and the company wants to see your certificate and transcript.

7. This thread is specifically for USA Credential Evaluation for graduate education.

8. Not ALL Schools in the USA accept WES credential evaluation report, but MOST Schools do accept, some schools have an internal evaluation team that does it and recommend to Admissions Committee.

9. Not ALL schools will give you admission into Masters degree with your HND together with WES Credential Evaluation Report, admission into USA Masters & PhD degree programs are the same thing as looking for a job, you will need good grades, some work experience, leadership experience, good TOEFL Score (Not all school need TOEFL from Nigerians, some believe that we are an English speaking country), good recommendation letters, some research experience, and statement of purpose, GRE, some portfolio of sample work like artists. There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in USA. Checking on their admissions website will guide you accordingly.

10. For the GRE. Not all programs require GRE. Check the admissions requirements. As a student, there are some questions that looks stupid, asking what is the expiration date for GRE doesn't add up. Remember that YOU are a student. GRE.org has all the information. GRE lasts for 5 years, TOEFL is 2 years.

In fact, if you are a HND graduate from Nigeria, and you want to study in the USA, this thread is packed with quantum of information to guide you, remember that nobody will spoonfeed you. The whole information is laid out for serious ones. If you read this page from the beginning to the end, you will kickstart the process. I mean it! I have even provided guidance on how to even post your Certificate to WES and how to request for your Transcript from your school and the needed requisition form. It is on this thread. Remember that HND holders are doers, practical professionals.

I am providing this information on pro bono basis. There is a paid service if you want. But with the amount of information on this thread, you can go to the moon!

As a busy professional, I may not have the time to reply, but surely I will answer some pertinent questions.

Be Brave! Start this WES Credential Evaluation Process. Remember, WES started asking for WAEC on 1st August 2018.

Are you trying to say a HND degree holder can gain admission for a masters degree program in the USA with WES(ICAP) evaluation, if the intended school normally accepts WES evaluation? I mean, can any school which accepts WES evaluation accept HND based WES evaluation?

This your question simply shows that you have not read this thread from page 1 to the current page.

It is already a settled matter: HND is Equivalent to US Bachelors Degree

As I have always maintained on various fora that I contribute, that Masters & PhD Admissions in the USA (also called graduate education) is not like the nonsense formalities that we borrowed from the UK, whereby you just apply, send your Transcript and thats all.

In the USA, you need to demonstrate that you are fit for graduate education, this is done by:

Transcript, Grades, GPA
Statement of Purpose
Recommendation Letter
GRE (For some programs)
TOEFL (For some programs, but as an international student, seeking for Graduate Assistant/Fellowship, it is highly advised to take the exam)
CV/Resume showing your leadership roles and achievements, awards, research papers you have published, etc.

Just as I note earlier, it is like looking for job. You have to have a competitive profile and the Admissions Committee need to see with all these documents that you have the capacity and fit for graduate education.

In conclusion, your HND meets the undergraduate education requirements for Masters and PhD degree admissions in the USA.

Can any school which accepts WES evaluation accept HND based WES evaluation? YES

Thanks for the answer.

GNwafor:
Fellow Friends;

• by requiring that official transcripts be sent to WES directly by the institutions or examination bodies that issued them;
OR
• by requiring that official transcripts be authenticated by the relevant government authority (e.g. Ministry of Education) before being sent directly to WES;
OR
• by verifying documents submitted by individuals by sending them back to the institutions/examination bodies that issued them and obtaining a written confirmation of their authenticity.

You certainly followed the wrong route. HND is equivalent to Bsc in USA. Most USA schools don't understand the conversion so it is best you do a course by course evaluation with WES. You will be amazed with the outcome. I have quite a number of friends who have successfully completed their Masters programmes in different high ranking universities in USA after obtaining the WES evaluation. Ambassador Kehinde Tawede says so.......

HND is not equivalent to Bsc in USA.

As a matter of fact, I inquired from a school in USA about getting Masters with HND and they asked me to complete my Bsc before I apply.

Check out the response I got from a University in US.

Hello Otaifoh,

Thank you for your interest in Texas A&M-Kingsville. We are very excited you want to join our university.
Unfortunately we do not accept HND for an eligibility to a Masters program.
However, if you have completed your Bachelors after the HND, you can apply for Masters.

Sincerely

This is a very interesting question.

First, I will advise you to do the Credential Evaluation with WES.

Second, after the Credential Evaluation is completed, you can get admission to CONTINUE your studies.

But before I go further, what area did you major in your NCE? Again, what area of study do plan to venture into?

Provide answers to these questions, so that I can guide properly.

Ok. That's fine.

What am about to reveal to you is only known by very few people. But I know it will help your future and ambition.

1. Go ahead and do your Credential Evaluation with WES. It will shock you that after your evaluation, your GPA in US standard will be very high, this will increase your chances of getting admitted.

2. Write TOEFL, make sure you score at least 70 - 80.

3. Get admission in any US University through " Credit Transfer". It simply means that the US University will receive your Transcript from WES, and then compare it with their undergraduate curriculum, and strike out all the courses you have done, and you will then study the remaining courses on their curriculum, and graduate. Most of the time depending on the quality and content of your curriculum and transcript, you will only study between 2 - 4 semesters more and you will graduate with a BS in Physics.

Someone did National Diploma (Mechanical Engineering) at Federal Polytechnic Mubi, then did direct entry into Abubakar Tafewa Belewa University (ATBU), and studied for 1 year at ATBU (200 level), then because his parents are informed, his dad arranged and sent his ND Mechanical Engineering Transcript + Year 2 Transcript from ATBU to WES, after the evaluation, he applied to Louisiana State University (LSU) for undergraduate admission through "Credit Transfer", after the Admission Committee's review of his file, LSU told him that based on the number of courses and credits he has studied and earned, he only need to do 10 Courses = 30 Credits (3 Credits per course) this is including final year project; that is a 1 year of schooling.
Trust Naija, my guy hammered 10 As in all the courses, which is simply GPA of 4.0/4.0

LSU told him please enroll into PhD directly without Masters degree with full scholarship and fellowship, within another 4 years, he earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from LSU. Today, he is a Lecturer at University of Uyo.

So this is possible. The problem in this part of the world is the lack of information especially by our teacher who knows nothing about the outside world.

I can guide you to even search for school.

But do your homework - WES Credential Evaluation, TOEFL, then we can talk.

I hope this puts a strong light on your path.

Hoping to hear from you.

Chief, Yes I have clues. I have knowledge and information about USA Graduate education.
There are over 4000 colleges and universities in the USA.
A lot of them accept HND.
Note they don't know what HND is. All you do is do your Credential Evaluation, and present a copy of the evaluation to them. But most importantly, you will need to find out if they accept WES, other Evaluation Service Agency or the school has an in-house evaluation team which part of the admission committee.

Yes you can even study for free, but that does not mean that you will not prove to US Embassy in Nigeria that you have in excess of between 8 - 10 million Naira (around $30,000) for 1 year expenses in your name or your sponsor, so that they can grant you US Student Visa (F1 Visa). There are scholarships, Teaching Assistantship, Research Assistantships, Graduate Assistantships position, etc whereby you can work and get paid while studying, and most often, you will not pay tuition fees.

So everything depends on you, your preparedness, the type and amount of information you have.

Tuition fees varies from school to school. It ranges from $7,500 to $52,000 per year.

People I coach, I normally tell them, forget about all the high rankings you see online.

At graduate education (MS & PhD), the rankings belong to the department, how renowned are the professors, what is the volume of money available for research, how "impactful" are the research being conducted there.

Take for instance, assuming you want to study Nanotechnology (Nanoscale Engineering), the best school is not Harvard or Yale or Princeton or Columbia, it a school established in 1965 State University of New York (SUNY Polytechnic Institute) - this is just a department that metamorphosed into a full School, the total research investment of this department is in the excess of $24 Billion (that is Nigeria's annual budget) with over 300 Companies involved in the Masters and Doctorate program.

Digest all this information so that I can know how to guide you further.

Good morning guys.....I just came across this thread and I am really interested in furthering my education.

I graduated from Yaba College of Technology in 2012 with:
An OND in Computer engineering (lower credit)
HND in Electrical Electronics Engineering (lower credit)

I would like to know the steps I can take in furthering my education with the above qualifications.
I visited the WES website and tried using their free tool but yabatech is not listed in it.
Info for America, Canada and European countries were free tuition/scholarships are available for foreign students

Thanks in advance
