SLOVFO:This is exactly what I plan to do next month... just a mini greenhouse that can be built with our local materials.. but fully secured from pest and insects |

Pistotita:Pls I'd like to know what you'd use as surfurcant for veggies.. what would you recommend for veggies.. can Epsom salt be considered?? |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by okoroemeka(m): 10:14pm On Oct 28, 2019 |
Psalmy2cute:you don't need those things, don't use something that's unproven, that can even wipe out your farm, most modern agrochemicals have surfactants added in them to make the materials stick to leafs and also work better. |

Psalmy2cute:why are this retailers milking you like this, 5g etna its not more than 2,200, 50grams @16,200. Bro stay away from habanero, I can feel your imagination of getting rich quick from it. Try chili pepper easy to manage and the market price its of same range with habanero during peak. |

FMCASH:I understand farming is not a get reach quick scheme .. I choose habenaro based on market demand During my research on technicism seeds I was told etna f1 5g was sold at 4500 in Ibadan so when you consider leaving ogun state to Ibadan for the seed .. it's safe to say you got each at 5k each 1 Like |

Psalmy2cute: You should learn nutrient management. I apply Mg and S to all my crops in the right proportion. I just make sure that my combo is fully packed. The beauty of organic is that most are packed with natural major and micro nutrients but may be in very little quantity. If you lack any nutrient, add it. This is my opinion. There are alternatives to Epsom salt. It depends on the situation. I use what is available and cheap. Yes, I use surfurcant. It is very helpful. There is no harm done even you add it to a product which claims it is already there. Too much of it will do no harm. So, I use it when I can. If in dry season, I may not bother. But in rainy season, you better get the best product out there; else, you will be spraying in vain. 1 Like |

To the person asking about suffurcant - it's not every thing they use in Europe & America that you must buy in order to farm in Nigeria. Otherwise where is your profit going to come from. Whenever possible, I try to think of local alternatives to some of these foreign products. A useful & readily available suffurcant is good old vegetable oil. 2 or 3 spoons per 16 litre knapsack will do the job. First, mix the oil with a small amount of the product you want to spray & ensure a good blend before mixing in the knapsack. That's your suffurcant there! |

Biki2010:Do you ever put into consideration the reaction of vegetable oil with the chemicals? 1 Like |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Biki2010: 2:37pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
Pistotita: So far, I've not observed any negative reaction. Also what possible reaction can vegetable oil, which is nearly 100% natural have on a pesticide/fungicide compared to most commercial suffurcants which are synthetic. Anyway, those who want a super cheap and readily available can give it a try. |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Nobody: 2:58pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
Biki2010: You need to research the following; 1. The role and efficiency of veggie oil used as surfactants. 2. The cost of good surfactant vs veggie oil. I think you are just making assumptions. You must really know the quantity of oil need with the same result as Surfactants...then compare the cost. 3. A pilot using veggie oil vs Surfactants....and see the result before you make recommendations 4. How veggie oil can reduce potency of nutrients and chemicals you apply so it you will need to use more and more chemicals 5. The quantity of chemicals in the so called natural oil vs the quantity in the Surfactants. Go through the various extraction process of the veggie oil and return to tell me that oil is truly free from chemicals. Perhaps good Surfactants are better than those oil you are talking about. After your research, return and let's discuss. 1 Like |

SLOVFO:Harmattan is the worst period as I do not see any issue with germination rate of seeds during rainy season. I asked my friend the germination rate of the cukes he showed last week, and he replied 99.8% I laughed. "See his coconut head". He didn't want to say 100%. So, "guy what are you doing with the remaining 10% in the trays? Oh! I will find space to jam them". Hahahahhaa! I am happy you guys are discussing issues farmers face. When we tell them to get some things, they say our mouth is "error". Lol. Many of you will start changing to become better farmers And it is not that some people do not want to change, but they are misguided. Experience is the best teacher. |

Biki2010:I will never spray vegetable oil on these cucumbers we are working hard to set up this coming dry season, why will I try such thing when I know almost every fungicide and foilar fertilizer has surfactants and co in them,my vegetable oil will be reserved for cooking jollof rice not spraying on cukes. |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Nobody: 5:06pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
okoroemeka: If you do not mind, kindly name the ones you know which definitely contain surfactant and let us really check them out. Cos as far as I know, they all do not contain anything in them. Or is it Jubaili's inferior products that will add surfactant to their products? Let us be realistic. |

Biki2010:I've just experimented what you suggested on dry wood using vegetable oil as surfurcant, it works fine though I've seen others with better results on YouTube So for now I can also say.. vegetable oil can act as Surfactants .. but how sure are you vegetable oil wont have a negative effect on the plant?? |

Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Nobody: 7:30pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
okoroemeka: I am not the person who suggested veggie oil. You wrote that it's included in most products. Well, I dont know anything about hafa; therefore, I cannot make any comment. However, take note of the following: 1. The harder the water, the more you need. 2. The thicker the chemical solution; the more you need. 3. The more chemical combos in the knapsack, the more you need. 4. It does not do harm if it is too much 5. It is useless if it is not enough. 6. The quantity in hafa may be just enough for using hafa only in the solution. Are you sure it is enough when more pesticides are added? From the 5 statements above, anyone can decide which way to go. This is my stand on the issue. 1 Like |
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Biki2010: 8:55pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
We grow plenty cabbage. Probably because of their thickness, Cabbage leaves take in water very slowly which means your spray needs to stay on the leaves a little longer for it to be absorbed. One way we found to keep spray longer on the leaves is to use a suffurcant, in this case, vegetable oil. So far, it has worked brilliantly for us. We don't add a suffurcant when spraying Cucumber because we haven't found it to be necessary, and infact, the last thing you want as a cucumber farmer is little patches of oil stain on your fruits. No such concern with cabbage since you often have to remove 3 - 4 layers of leaves before you sell, so buyers absolutely see no sign of any oil stain. At the end of the day, it comes down to understanding what you grow and devising specific solutions for specific plants. One size rarely fits all. 2 Likes |

Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Biki2010: 9:19pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
Never grown pepper, but if I did and felt I needed a suffurcant, I would certainly experiment with vegetable oil on a small patch of the planted field. But that would most certainly be before fruiting starts. |
