Then imagine me wey just come Yankee? I will forever dodge the snowy regions. Texas 105*F, we die there! cheesy

I lived in North Dallas for about 4 years and the winters were brutal.

From October to March we got death defying low temps. I always wondered how son of men had endured this for hundreds of years.

After my divorce I quickly ran back to Southern California grin

I did a trip from Houston to Oklahoma city in 2017 late December.

I started at around 55*f at Houston and for every hour I drove upwards, I lost 3 to 4*.
When I got to Dallas I was below 40.
I arrived Ok City a little below 30 and with light hail.

When I left, I said - Never Again! cheesy

I was at San Diego in September, excellent weather and beautiful city!
Next summer, I must repeat that trip! Only about $120 for a return flight. smiley

My Nigerian understanding of work was warped...

Work long hours, highly manual sorry technical tasks, weekends and holidays, mornings and nights... I once did over 30 hours straight work, on another project - 77 days straight on the field.

Part of the reasons why I dislikED managers...
'They don't work' but are paid big salaries. cheesy

No wonder I had preferences for roles that still requires sooooo much stress - manufacturing or process engineer.

My friend says for roughly the same salary with Supply chain or Safety engineers? He cannot kill himself.
He is also on the look out for laptop pressing roles. cheesy

My current role in Quality is special - I'll explain that in a bit...
My rice and fried meat deh cold, make I chop small inside. cheesy

As I said before, my resume was patterned to fit into roles as a manufacturing, process and industrial engineer... No love for Quality.

I still applied for roles in all.
At the interview, I was discharging answers in the line of control plan, Guage RnR, Cpk, Ppk, SQL etc etc..
The manager just deh look me.. cheesy See this one...

That's not what you'll be doing here - he said.
I was confused then but now I understand.

Tuck in every morning, go to the office, press my keyboard, caress n romance the customers, ensure compliance documentation are in order and processes are compliant, do customer facility walk-through, do supplier facility audits etc etc..

After all this, my shirt remains tucked in... No Sweat.. grin

For the same salary as our process n manufacturing engineers? I cannot cough...

Make Una follow me thank Oluwa for delivering me from manual labor engineer and turning me to a keyboard pressing engineer. cheesy

My plans have changed - I Aspire to remain part of the decision making team. You should too.

All my former managers, forgive me for the hate, sorry dislike I had for you all. cheesy

It's due to automotive and vehicle emission standards.

In Ibadan I would guess that 75% of the vehicles I see on the road will be stopped by US police and towed, not driven to an impound lot.

When I drive through Oluyole I always see factories exhausting fumes to the atmosphere. A good 50% of the one Is see will be shut down immediately in the USA.

Another thing is all this our I PASS MY NEIGHBOR GENERATORS, those ones alone na case.

I was talking to a friend two days ago, we worked at the same company back then...

What we never dreamed of 3 years back, we are currently not dreaming about it but actually living the life.

He currently works in the oil fields in the U.S, making 5x more than our senior engineers that currently work for his current company but in Nigeria.

His problem is no longer money, me sef wey just start no deh hungry again.. cheesy [s]my student loan go pay back himself, no be me go pay that money[/s] grin grin grin

When I talk to him, I remember how life can change in an 'instant'. 4 years ago, I dropped him off at the airport to embark on his Msc. trip... Today the story is different.

Quite unfortunate the oil industry is dying slowly, me sef for follow make blood money.
That brings me to a new topic -
The best jobs are gotten thru referrals, he did submit my resume at his company and after I passed thru all the processes, I got an offer this past February for an Oilfield Drilling Engineer role.

This my brain deh shake - I disregarded an opportunity to make six OO.. But that's just me... My style is unconventional.

I'll be disregarding another opportunity to start as a Gas Turbine Engineer next February, another chance to make six OO will be pissed away.

Don't blame me, I'm enjoying my role as a Laptop pressing engineer... grin I especially enjoy coming home to meet GucciBabe every night. kiss

Field work na suffer! Yes, I said so.

Here is a post I saw a while back on another thread -

...Most Nigerians i have seen here from my experience hoard information cos they dont want you to be better than them, but the Indians have formed a formidable force.... They share information between themselves and with their combine effort and money they start up something brilliant with the initiator the CEO. You will not find one Indian person working in a warehouse or doing menial job except in a gas station which is owned by his brother or relation.

Mind you Indians are the richest immigrant in America, because of just one thing which is INFORMATION between themselves...

On the other hand Nigerians haven't gotten to that point yet because of our mentality, hoarding of information, "you must not be better than me in america" mentality. More so we are not organised like the Indians, and we have not created a niche for ourselves, we have a long way to go...

Truly we have a long way to go...

Part of the reasons why I was having a hard time securing an internship was lack of information, I had no idea how to properly present my skills and experiences but that has changed.

Beyond changing that, I made it a personal mission not to allow people suffer unnecessarily - the experiences gained during internships and the money earned could go a long way.

A quick check on linkedin would show that students from Tamuk are doing something right. I have gone beyond that level...
Rendering career advice or sharing your knowledge about issues when clearly the receiver is struggling wouldn't hurt you, the US is toooooo big for someone else to displace you or become richer than you.

I applied for the Gas Turbine job from info a friend gave me that a certain company was hiring and I got the offer. Has it killed him? Hell no.

I interviewed at a sugar refining and a computer hardware company - didn't get the jobs BUT I mentioned it to someone, he applied to one and was sourced for one and with little coaching based on my experiences with those companies, he got fulltime offers from both. How does that take food off my table?
It doesn't, it only gives me one more person I go borrow money from. cheesy

I envy the indians, they are excellent at making opening for the kinsmen n women. We all should learn to share information and collaborate, there is too much opportunity in the US to be selfish but even in the midst of the selfishness of some, "las las, all men go still deh alright" - A. Richy, 2017

A friend even called me last week that he has gotten an offer for a software engineer role months before his graduation- starting salary is six 00. I am glad to have one less person to worry about.

Your oil industry is slowly dieing?
Here in Canada, it is literally dead.
I also read today that around 53 billion barrel of crude reserves was discovered in Iran yesterday. More surplus oil to the market to crash the price even further angry

My heart skipped when I read this. When crude become like common water (we are getting there), Nigeria's situation will be worse than Venezuela's.

The rig count here is steadily dropping - I and my friends that work in the upstream industry were thinking there would be a boom for 4 to 5 years before the next burst.
There is no semblance of boom here, the day rates are at unfathomably low levels. cry

When I saw my offer letter, the money was good but nowhere near the pre-2017 burst levels. The company even reduced their pay last month - unheard of in the upstream industry.

This was what happened back in Canada. As far back as 2015, 20 to 40% salary reductions were common, then the lay-offs started. The lay-offs are still ongoing as I speak. I was affected in late 2015. Luckily, I changed industry to utility.
We in Canada actually think the US oil industry is booming since the oil is not expensive to extract like the bitumen majorly mined up north in Canada. Hmm. I guess we are wrong.

Despite the obvious decline in oil and transition to clean renewable energy, Trump doesn't support the green new deal. Is it because the deal was signed by a Democrat President. Electric cars is taking over speedily and Tesla is making billions from this transition and also AI is on the rise too. I saw a trending video of robotic soldier. The world is really changing at a fast pace.
