i blame myself for going back. I was trying to be humble making no real deals. My fam said just for little money that im risking humiliation. I blame myself really. And to a large extent you are right.

Easy with the too many "I blame myself" ..... It has happened, you've learnt, pick yourself up and think of what next to do with your life...it's not your fault you were only trying to make a living and be independent and not a bug to the family members.... those idiots in that school are ingrates and like a dog they want you to beg for your food(money)....

I heard you say you wanna start somethings afresh ,there's absolutely nothing wrong with that... I myself despite everything I know ...I'm gonna start my life afresh next year... So don't feel sad ,you're doing just fine.... You're not old ,you've got fire in your bones, you've got the ability to excel.

So instead of sitting down here and blaming some as$holes for not treating you right why not go out there and treat your destiny right.

btw I don't actually do this but I like your person.... I wish to know you personally if you don't mind!

Thanks. Even if i get employment in another place, once i leave i am not coming back. They didn't even tell me the deal was off, they let me come back and then ignored me. It wasn't enough that they let me off the main job early and i still came to do something small. It was just that they wanted me to look like i needed them, they needed the last memory of me to make them look superior. I dont blame them. I could have left and never come for anything but they had to do it this way, ignoring me.

Sorry about that better the light will shine on you.

thanks. I will get other jobs by Gods grace.

Sure you will. Some people are careless with maintaining or keeping a cordial relationship with other people. They think it all ends this moment, now and here sparing little or no thought for the future. It's those low life teachers, they must have influenced her and she being so stupid to allow herself to be bamboozled. They're just jealous you have an extra talent that can fetch you money.

In saner climes, what you have is enough to put food on your table. Imagine if you are Fred Quimby of Tom and Jerry, imagine if you are a cartoonist or art director for Disney World. You're a super star already. Work more on yourself, hone your skills. You can actually be an efficient receptionist alongside a creative artist. Please, leave any toxic environment or individuals that will put you down or bruise your ego. Good luck with your future endeavours.

I got a job last year at a private school. I was given the position of a receptionist. To be fair to this narration, i wasn't a very good receptionist because though I tried my best, what i studied had nothing to do with my job. I did my best to get the hang of the job, but i constantly forgot things i was supposed to remember, though i always did the basics.

I did my best to make up for my defects. Being a nursery and primary school i noticed they needed help with their artworks and since I am good at drawing, anytime there was no work on my table i did a lot of artwork for events or which the school needed for decor. They appreciated it so much and gave me a lot to do which unbelievably the parents were told their kids did it all.

I tried to have a good relationship with my boss and all. For her bday we did a large card and i was the one that crafted it in two days. I even told my boss about academic issues i had and how i planned to go back and fix everything next year.

Chin up, Hun. Sometimes experience like this is needed to give us that push to blaze our trail.
I love your honesty and you seem like a very smart person.
Please do not judge yourself by your failings. Being a receptionist isn't your forte so don't be too hard on yourself.
I'm glad you are about to get back on your feet. Hang in there

There is still hope for Naija. For once I like what Nairalanders are saying to encourage this young lady. She needs the support and she is getting plenty here and it will go a long way in setting her on the right path to self discovery and potential breakthrough. Kudos ladies and gentlemen!

We Yoruba's have an adage that says, "where a man says good by" he never goes back to say "I'm back". but it's really not your fault though, after all they called you, something tells me they'll still need you and that's when you'll stick it to them.

Fast forward till today, i was given another deal on Monday, i was told to come on Wednesday to do the job. That same Monday, i was told by some teachers there that there wasn't supposed to be any negotiation that i should be doing those things for free, that we are family,im not a real artist. Still, i was expected to come today and do the art stuff.I still came since the deal was still on and the boss hadn't actually said i wasn't recieving payment today.

I went there and guess what, the proprietress was with those two teachers that said those things to me on monday. She asked me why i came to visit, as if there was no deal today. They all just kept quiet and ignored me. I gathered courage and asked " how about the art job and the deal i was supposed to be paid for? " The proprietress just said there was nothing. They could have called me to tell me but no, it was sweeter to have me arrive, look like a beggar, ignore me and then tell me bye in high snobbish voices as i was leaving. Why did they humiliate me?

you are a kind-hearted and simple person. they just took advantage of you. Nigeria is a jungle where you need to know that Darwin law of evolution applies in real life-law of natural selection and survival of the fittest. Jealousy made 2 teachers and boss to treat you that way. Just avoid them. They are not good persons. keep it up and improve on yourself.

Hi purple 25,
Allow me to say this, pay no regard to RichDad50. He's just a sadist.
Now, are you sure that place is really a school? I think you should paste the name here so we can know one of the schools to avoid taking our kids to. If a school cannot recognise and appreciate open natural talents which are easily discernible in kids such as writing and artistry, how then can they unearth the latent ones?
You're like a Picasso and a Soyinka rolled into one. The problem is not you, it's them. They are a bunch of jealous, ruinous, no-good people. You should have seen them for what they are and left a lot earlier.
Pls don't try to be everything, though it's not a crime to try out something even if it's not ur forte. In Europe, you'll be treated like a king and given the opportunities to show ur skills.
Brace yourself. Organise yourself. Be strong. The world is before you and you're bound to make it.

Dear Purple,
I do not think the problem is you loosing your Job or your so called inadequacies. I read your writing L.A.Z.Y which I could decided was about you.

So you are in a psychological state where you are trying to choose what to be. Also not finishing school has traumatised you, and finds a way to creep into what ever you do.

So face it, and sort it out. The painting Job they gave you at the school was a soft landing to allow you exit, they also gave you hints about not coming back. So do not be angry about it, they are irrelevant and in your past, let's talk of the future.

You made up your mind that you are a writer, but cause of unfinished school, you are not sure if you are. It seems you are not sure exactly what you are or can be fine artist, teacher, writer.

But one thing that is sure is that you have the artistic flair.

So let's deal with, Problem 1. Who are you?

Sit yourself down, decide what you want to do, not just what you like, but what you like that can pay your bills in future. Where will you want to define success in the line. For example, let's say you want to be a writer, what kind of writer can pay your bills ( definitely not nairaland writing). You've got to be serious and committed to it like a business. So let's say you prefer Movie Script writing. I think that can pay your bills. When are you successful. Maybe when you can produce your own movies? There or alternatives, like becoming a web content developer, blogging, or even specializing in children's books etc.

Problem 2: That nagging feeling that you are not qualified or properly trained.
What can you do to make it go away and boost your self confidence? Frankly, going back to school full time at your age is a waste of your time. School is really overated here, because they hardly teach you the functional skills you need to succeed. What you need now is a highly functional training and a certificate to pat your back and make you feel warm and fluffy with yourself. So why not do a part time training in your chosen area of specialization. You will horn your skills and be working for your self at same time. A lot of private schools offer part-time programs, no body writes part time on your certificate. It is same as others. You can also decide to go to the open University.

At the end the particular school does not matter, it is your skills that do. Most of us, apart from doctors, learnt our job specific skills on the job not in school. Nigerian schools only train your thought pattern, so stop beating your self too much about not finishing it, you did not miss a lot. Infact the inadequacy is likely in your mind, and unintentionally you project it to people. So do something to satisfy your inner mind and have a direction.

I forgot to add, it won't hurt you to have a mentor. Not just any Aunt or Uncle, but someone you know who has succeeded in the path you have choose to walk. Not your parents oh. They are either too emotional or to zealous.

Finally, relax, laugh over that embarrassment or even cry over it, but dust your feet and live life. It is a wonderful place, this Earth. It's awesome if you know where to look, especially an artist like you.

Your so called boss is an evil person. Don't take it personal because it is not your fault at all, though I think you ought to have called her on phone just to confirm the appointment after your confrontation by those two good for nothing male teachers.
Put everything behind you and think of how to move forward with your life. The incident has nothing to do with your capability or adequacy as a person..I know you are conflicted because a part of you is forcing you to believe you deserve the treatment because of your many mistakes whilst still working with them.
Forget about it and move forward with your life baby.

We all did not understand how she even got invited for the interview in the first place. She now works in one of this high end schools in Victoria Island.

My boss says she looks out for passion first before qualification.

They should not have used you in front desk.

Living in self delusion, I see.

Probably also a classic narcissist.

Erase their existence from your mind and take this experience as a lesson learned, as well as a mistake never to be made again.

Improve your skills as the visual artist you are and look for jobs in that niche.

Build your self esteem and confidence. Until you believe in yourself and show it, no one will take you too seriously. All in all, best wishes going forward

@ purples25,

While reading through the original post, I had to scroll down to check how long it is. I was glad that it was long enough. But, when I got to the last sentence, I wish it was longer. You write so well and remind me of someone. I had to dig through my browser's history to find that lady. Check out her blog here -> https://lynnandtonic.com/art/ . I think that if you can build more on your art and writing skills and also develop yourself to be a UI/UX dev, you will an invaluable hot cake. I have friends who are doing fine with just their artwork (check out https://www.instagram.com/artallison), I have some who live fine as UI/UX dev (checkout https://www.behance.net/scozky) and we know many writers who are living fine. Lady, you have amazing skills and I don't think you should be begging anyone to employ you.

I know how shitt.y it could be at times. Especially when you are an introvert. Kpele. You tried your best to show empathy and it just didn't work.

Why don't you consider this from another angle. It's time to show revenge by using that anger to make money.

Do a couple of proposal to schools, show them samples of what you can do and have done before, and negotiate a deal while also telling them how your previous employer used it as a marketing tool.

You will be surprised what can happen. You could even work from the comfort of your home. Avoid humans kinda.
