Help! Drove Home With A Discharged Engine Oil by Dtruthspeaker: 11:21am On Jan 05, 2020 |
Kai! Just came back from the village and as I parked, I saw that my tyre well and tyre was wet with oil. I started the car once more and looked under the engine, then I saw the oil drop. Woke up this morning and checked the oil level, no reading on the dip stick! Didn't get any warning of oil pressure drop or rather oil light indicator did not come on Hope engine is not done? 2004 Crv Note:i put a fresh oil at the village immediately before returning, so my first suspect is that the oil bolt was not shut tightly.

Dtruthspeaker:Refill, tighten and keep driving. Honda engines are quite robust unlike Toyota. 2 Likes |

Smartchoiice:This is the dumbest advice so far this year. What if the sump is cracked? The OP should first assertain where the leak is coming (with an expert if necessary), then if it isn't some crack or from another dangerous place and in the engine and he has seen it is from the drain plug, he can then go ahead to refill and tighten the drain plug appropriately. #cyberpeace |

Thank you both. I also thought If I cracked something but my true question is I hope the engine is not done since it brought me home. Also do I expect to change some things in the engine? |

Hello. I don’t think you damaged anything. Trust me. For your engine to be damaged due to insufficient engine oil, your low pressure oil warning light has to illuminate. If the light is indeed working and it didn’t illuminate, then you are lucky. The oil is short of the optimum level but isn’t dangerously low yet until the oil light comes on. I drive a Honda Accord and the dip stick may not have any oil at the tip but be rest assured that you have about 2 and a half to three liters of oil left in that engine. As the post above advised, get a mechanic to check to discover the source of the oil leak. Once that is determined, fix the oil leak and refill oil to the optimum level and you are good to go. Hope this helps. But whatever you do, do not drive it to the mechanic’s. Rather get the mechanic to come over to your place. Cheers. |

emekan: Thank you all. I always read the instrument cluster for any change but no notice was given me; no increase in temperature, nor oil warning light, nothing at all. I noticed a drop in power but I attributed it to fatigue. But it was when I parked and I was looking around the car that I saw the wetness. Glad to know this now and update: my mechanic confirmed that I hit the chassis covering the sump (one nonsense rock I put in between my tyres forgetting that I was now fully loaded with village things hence a lower stance) and while the chassis protected the sump, the cheap oil filter was unprotected and therefore sprung a leak. Right now, we are purchasing a fresh oil and oil filter. Would be back to let you know the results. Thank you all, was really scared of killing my engine. |

I am certain if it were a Toyota, you will be buying another engine but Honda engines are die hard. 2 Likes |
