Issues With My Kia Rio by ashiwajew: 12:50am On Jul 18, 2017
I bought this Kia Rio in January and it has been working perfectly not until water keeps drying off from the radiator in April, especially when I increase the AC to 2. To cut the long story short, on Sunday I tried to start it but didn't start but after so much attempt it started but with bad sound and vibration so I called a mechanic who says the coils and plugs are bad and that it's due for servicing. On Monday we headed for Ladipo, we bought everything we needed inclusive of new Mobil oil to service and after we administered all of these, it's still not starting in the process of recheck in one of the plugs he discovered stain of water on the plug and realized that the engine oil as turned milky then he said the gasket is damaged. Please could damaged gasket cause a car not to start and what other things should we look out for. Please any advise to prevent engine from being affected

The deed Has been done already replace head gasket. Be sure the top cylinder has not been affected. Heat and aluminium do not go together. Inspect top cylinder using a cylinder inspection camera. Worse case scenario might be to have a replacement engine embarassed

Yes top gasket can cause it if it burnt
You can also check if its mixing oil with water

Thanks for your response. We replaced with a new engine oil and moments later realized that it has turned milky which means oil has mixed with water

Thanks. The mechanic says nothing is wrong with my cylinder merely looking at it. I am scared as I do not have money to replace engine as I have already spent money buying plugs and coils thinking that was the issue.

What actually prevent the car from starting is due to loss of compression due to head Gasket leak .
You have leak in your cooling system but you ignored which eventually cause overheating that destroy your head gasket.
After replacement of the head gasket ,you will still need to revisit the issue that is causing loss of coolant that damage the gasket if you don't want the repeat of this issue again .
If you have the require fund ,just go for engine replacement and dont forget to go for cooling system pressure check after replacement.

The loss of coolant is as a result of the radiator cover allowing water to escape into the reservoir, I never knew dis before until the mechanic did a test on the cover by trying to siphon from the hose and water dropping in his mouth which he says water should not have come out from the hose [qquote author=honmusa post=58567890]

That is where your problem is, water is not supposed to be used in car cooling system. water turns to vapour (steam) at 100 degrees, your car engine works around 96 to 105, the essence of the cooling system (coolant and fan) is to bring the temperature down from the 105 back to 96 and it is a continous process of cooling.

now impure water will have a lower boiling point less than 100 probably around 90 to 95 am sure you never used distilled water in your cooling system hence the water in the system evaporates turns into steam which is extreme hot and pressurized. Not to bore you with chemistry and physics stuff but using water for car cooling instead of coolant is a disaster for failure.

There are two places where I top with water, the radiator and a white container that looks like a reservoir so we noticed yesterday that whenever we attempt to start the car the hose that connects the two of them leaks water from the radiator into the container which the mechanic described abnormal and that the radiator cover is bad. Please what's your take and where should I pour coolant and water?

The damage has been done already, gasket has burnt, engine will be dismantled, gasket replaced and engine sealed back.

1. After engine is sealed, and car start, you should do a manual DIY diagnosis on the engine.

A. While car is cold and engine running, open the radiator cap, if you notice bubbles forming on top the radiator continously, the gasket job wasn't done well

B. If the engine oil dip stick is still filled with a milky Guage or the oil is watery and dripping from the Guage stick, job wasn't done well.

C. You can use water to test the efficacy of job done after been satisfied replace with coolant for both radiator and reservoir tank.

D. Break engine by driving for 1000km and servicing the engine again.

E. Hard start of car when cold means engine is still loosing compression

F. Smoke from exhaust highly visible when accelerator is depressed around 3rpm, the job was not done well.

All of the checks are good. No milky oil noticed yet. Already replaced the milky oil, I will continue to check for any change. I drove it for about 30mins and oil still looks good but I noticed a strange sound like a roar especially when I depress the accelerator a bit and it jerks when am in gear 1 especially on a rough road and when I speed like say gear 3 and slow down due to obstruction and decide to put it on neutral, it goes off immediately my foot leaves the clutch. Finally my leg feels a bit of vibration on the clutch and very faint underground sound when I release the clutch

Physical inspection by a qualified technician will pinpoint these issues, I can't diagnose sounds via Internet.

Jerks in gear one and engine goes off when slowing down is similar to a clogged or dirty throttle body and MAF sensor shit. You still need a technician for this as I don't know the engine setup of your car
Re: Issues With My Kia Rio by ashiwajew: 6:49am On Jul 20, 2017
Thanks sir. To avoid a repeat occurence of this issue. I just remembered now that when I first bought the car, whenever I opened the radiator, a green like water comes up and I didn't even know it was coolant. I never topped the water not until I gave it to an Uber driver and he suddenly started complaining of over heating after two weeks then I took the car from him and I have been topping with water since then. In short whether or not I experience over heating I top with water not until a mechanic removed the thermostat and set it so fan comes up after any ignition, this solution gave me a relief as I stopped topping for a while till I gave my car to a friend to take to a function, he got back late at night, I realized the following morning that water has dried up then I poured about 4 liters tried to start but didn't come up which gave rise to this gasket ish. Right now the water in the radiator is looking dirty and still escaping into the reservoir, I even took the car to where they sell radiator cap but all the caps are leaking but not leaking when same radiator caps are tested on my mechanic's Honda civic

Your leak could either be internal or external. Go for a cooling system pressure test to ascertain area of leak

The mechanic only surpressed the issue and besides you are doing your engine a disservice by running your fan direct. My advice is to meet a qualified technician they have already replied in your thread and let them do a pressure test and revert your cooling system back to default. It will cost you, but it will be worth it on the long run.

If your car is the 2012-2016 Rio model, ur leak might be as a result of bad radiator filler...Check the inner lining of ur radiator filler where the radiator cap seal with the filler cap... you will notice some irregularities...that's wats causing ur leak. I had same issue with mine but was too late because my cylinder head was far gone after several overheating...

Replace the radiator filler...I got mine at ladipo for abt 5k. Make sure you check the inner lining of the one you r buying, those guys almost sold me one with a bad inner lining. Check properly to be sure u r being sold the correct radiator filler... I think hyundai accent have similar assembly but not exactly same as the rio.

NB: if ur cylinder head is already wrapped or cracked as a result of the overheating, the radiator filler replacement is just one step to solving your overheating problem as the Coolant will find other open route to escape. In my case Coolant started leaking out thru the exhaust.

Better still to save urself all these stress, just take ur car to gazzuzz, honmusa or mayor2013 and stop kazeems feeding fat on you. The earlier the better! That engine is expensive.

ashiwajew your mechanic is a cow.

Any mechanic that does not know what causes a mix between engine oil and coolant, should not even touch your brakepads.

If you want best results resurface both surfaces in a machine shop (cylinder/block), replace radiator, replace water pump, replace thermostat, install coolant.

This Kia has a potent issue - heating.
Cause - the AC condenser is a few inches off the plastic radiator.
The car front base is not steel, but fibre. With time on bumps and bad roads, it pushes the radiator towards the hot AC condenser, and it melts it. Water seeps out and pum! overheat, and knocked engine.

It's a very good car, but if you're always in the look out for this flaw, it's a superb fast far - the 6 speed manual.

Hi Ayo.What's the recommended coolant for kia rio 2014.
I noticed some oil spill on the right top of the engine. There is some noticeable vibration once in a while especially on idle with ac on.
The oil change doesnt indicate any discoloration. ie with water.Just that the radiator water level goes down a bit.
Someone recommended a gasget change?
Advice me .Thanks
