They may end up doing the buying, the question remains is it enough? I wouldn't bet on it.

I view market share as something that extends beyond theatrical release windows and year-end box office.

The future is direct-to-consumer (sustainable) global scalability on various platforms or devices (including your car.)

Sony doesn't have the generational IP (enough of it) with built-in fandom, or the finances (and likely desire) to invest biliions in new library content to bulid a (very likely) usustainable streaming platform of their own (that isn't gaming of course).

At their modest size (in comparison) they are better served as arm's dealers to various players, like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Disney +, Apple, etc.

pu7pl3:

Dude just tell him that nobody is buying Sony pictures..a merger sounds more realistic but as number 3 in us/ca market major studio share they don't even need to,they are actually the ones that might do the buying of either lions gate,Amblin or Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer but later in the future tho

They have crackle and word is with the emergence of all these new streaming services they are serving cool original content for adults especially and they are going to start pushing it like the rest(streaming services are the IT thing right now dont forget HBOMax) so that's a really dope and reliable market if you ask me,a lil bit saturated tho...and tbf if you consider Amazon to be better than modest I don't know why you be thinking Sony doesn't have enough IP...

If Apple is truly interested in making their streaming aspirations a success, it's something that would make sense to me, same for Amazon.

Neither really view streaming as their core business though, in Amazon's case it's another service among many, with it being a givaway for some customers.

My guess is if Sony Pictures were purchased, It would be by one of the tech giants in media (FAANG minus Netflix).

I've seen some speculate about a Sony-Lionsgate meger, but I still don't think it would have the scale to compete in the new media landscape of walled gardens. When I say 'compete', I don't mean running the business successfully, I mean being a buyer vs. being a seller in the industry.

Streaming isn't Disney's core business either at the moment, but it will increasingly become a fundamental part of their overall success moving forward.

Yeah. When I poked around on the internet, that seemed to be the general conclusion.

With regard to The Mandalorian and The Witcher, you guys should consider the platform. Like, come on grin. All things being equal, you would expect The Witcher to far outpace The Mandalorian. How many people have Netflix as opposed to Disney +? I think it speaks volumes that The Mandalorian is even in the same area code smiley

‘The Mandalorian’ Vs. ‘The Witcher,’ Disney Plus Vs. Netflix, In One Chart

Here's a snip of info from the above website.

Just for fun, here are some other Witcher vs. Mandalorian metrics to compare:

* The Witcher RT Critic Score: 64%
* The Mandalorian RT Critic Score: 94%
* The Witcher RT Audience Score : 93%
* The Mandalorian RT Audience Score: 93%
* The Witcher IMDB Audience Score: 8.5
* The Mandalorian IMDB Audience Score: 8.9
* The Witcher Metacritic Critic Score: 53
* The Mandalorian Metacritic Critic Score: 69
* The Witcher Metacritic Audience Score: 7.8
* The Mandalorian Metacritic Audience Score: 8.4

Speaking to how this success impacts Disney + moving forward, it's interesting to note that Star Wars wasn't even the biggest draw for people prior to the service's launch, but The Mandalorian became the biggest show in the world all the same.

BTW, I am a big fan of The Witcher series too.

I have yet to watch either of them, but plan on sitting down with Witcher asap. I'm taking a break on Monday. Maybe I'll binge it then.

I still need to order Disney +. I can't decide if it's worth it to get the bundle.

Amazon has the massive customer base and the cash to remain a relevant player if they so desire.

Ditto for Apple.

They can buy IP or create it (or aggregate it for a percentage).

Again, streaming isn't a neccessity for either company, two of the four biggest in the world.

Crackle is rather insignificant in the streaming space compared to other platforms and Sony has a minority stake.

Exactly..and that's the same thing with Sony..if you know this about Amazon why is it hard to admit the same truth about Sony? I'm not saying Sony is as big as Amazon but you should know they aren't slouches either..they are completely capable of running their pictures and staying relevant for as long as they want

For now.........and for it not to be said that all their eggs are in 1 basket.....is what I brought that up for

Let me be the first person to say "I'm done with this arguement" and actually do what I say

FX dropped some cool trailers today for shows coming to Hulu. I think FX is the unsung hero of the Fox purchase. Some of the greatest content anywhere.

my girl likes handmaid’s tale and that’s why I was thinking about Hulu. If they’ve got some cool stuff coming then I’ll probably be down with getting the package. I think the non-commercial package for Hulu is the way to go though. I don’t need to pay and watch commercials

Apparently, Disney may be getting the rights to the Defenders ( Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist) early from Netflix:

Marvel Reportedly Getting The Rights To The Defenders Back In Early 2020

Marvel Could Start Getting Its Netflix Heroes Back This Year

Though apparently, Disney also considering a film with the comic book version of the Defenders:

Defenders: The MCU May Be Assembling the Original Team

What do you guys hope to see from either Defenders team?

Now all they need is a James Wan or Sam Raimi type of director

Apple TV+ looks like garbage though. For all their resources, they have 7 shows and that is it. Its not like its HBO level content either.

I think some these tech companies would need to buy a smaller player, like Lionsgate or CBS/Viacom to be relevant in the streaming era.
