They do not learn from the saints of old simply because times have changed materialism is the order of the day, with the freedom to live immoral and disobedient life claiming grace whereas the bible said we do sin for grace to abound and that we are dead to sin but alive in Christ and live for him and no longer living for ourself as when we have not know God doing according to the will of the prince of the air working disobedience according to the lust and cravings of the flesh and the vainity of the carnal mind all who do such things have no part in the kingdom of God and of Christ.

The Spirit there is NOT about God speaking directly with humans anymore, it simply means listen to what Jesus commanded through the mouth of his witnesses (Christians). Act 1:8
Remember he said "i'm with you always" Matthew 28:20, so God's holy spirit whom Jesus asked the father to send is with the true Christians and it's assisting them in the preaching and teaching work! John 14:16

That's why you need CLARITY, if God still speak with people then you can't differentiate from the voices of demons any more, because all the spirits are calling Jesus name be it good or evil, the only difference is God's holy angels aren't permitted to speak with humans again to avoid complications but demons are still speaking!
