Belittling someone because of their opposing views is not good Basic Tank technology has not changed since WW2 based on the Panzer/ Tiger / Sherman the real upgrades have been in the FCS, protection ( Chobham, Kevlar or the US or Russian equivalent) Proforce did during the leadup to the development of the ARA acknowledge that their ultimate goal is to develop a Tank. feasibility is real if they can get their hands on a decommissioned NA T55 or a Vickers or even use Google. Here comes the hard part. After all the r&d will the FG buy it? 2 Likes |

OPERATIONAL VISIT: CAS INSPECTS ONGOING PROJECTS IN KAINJI, REAFFIRMS NAF’s COMMITMENT TO DEFEAT SECURITY THREATS FACING THE NATION The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to deal with all threats to the security of the Nation, with particular reference to terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, armed banditry and other forms of criminality, working in concert with sister Services and other security agencies. The CAS made this assertion today, 22 January 2020, while on a one-day operational visit to the 407 Air Combat Training Group (407 ACTG) Kainji, Niger State, to inspect ongoing infrastructural development projects aimed at improving the operational environment and enhancing the welfare of personnel and their families. The projects inspected include the ongoing re-construction/re-modeling of 3 blocks of 10 x single-bedroom flats for Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs), upgrade of the Unit’s water supply system as well as the ongoing re-construction of over 2.8Km of roads within NAF Base Kainji. While in Kainji, the CAS was briefed on the progress of work on the ongoing Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM) of the Alpha Jets and also witnessed the offline serviceability test of an Alpha Jet Larzac C6 engine using the recently upgraded Engine Test Bench in the Unit. Speaking after the inspection/assessment, Air Marshal Abubakar, while noting the importance of NAF Base Kainji to NAF’s combat air operations, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the projects. He said their completion would undoubtedly enhance the welfare of the personnel thereby improving their professional performance. The CAS also noted that the upgrade of the Engine Test Bench was a significant value addition in 2 major areas. The first, he said, was the building of the capacity of the personnel who had been trained to man the upgraded system for more effective and efficient service delivery, while the second was the fact that, with the upgrade, all parameters of engines could be checked on the ground before mounting them on the aircraft, thus reducing the probability of damage to other components during live testing on the aircraft. While expressing satisfaction with the progress of the Alpha Jet PDM, the CAS highlighted that this was the second time in the history of the NAF that such high-level upgrade was being conducted in-country. He stated that a unique feature of this particular PDM was the upgrade of the avionics system of the aircraft to improve operational safety as well as increase the reliability and effectiveness of the aircraft. The CAS disclosed that work on one of the Alpha Jets, NAF 452, would be completed and test flight conducted by the end of February 2020, while work on 2 others would be completed before the end of the year. Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar noted that the remarkable achievements recorded by the NAF over the past four and a half years were as a result of the immense support provided by the Federal Government which had enabled the Service to increase its manpower strength by over 12,000 personnel, whilst facilitating the training of over 100 new pilots, over 517 new engineers/technicians as well as over 1,000 Special Forces personnel within the period. He noted that this had positioned the Service for more effective and efficient employment of Air Power to deal with the security threats facing the Nation. The CAS, who was accompanied on the visit by Branch Chiefs and Directors from Headquarters NAF, was received, upon arrival in Kainji, by the Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Musa Mukhtar as well as the Commander 407 ACTG, Squadron Leader Kingsley Igwegbe. The CAS has since returned to Abuja. IBIKUNLE DARAMOLA Air Commodore Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force

Wagtail Aviation developing armed gyrocopter "Wagtail Aviation is working on a range of manned and unmanned heavy gyrocopters and is experimenting with arming them with machineguns, rocket-propelled grenades and countermeasures, amongst others, for a variety of defence and security missions. Wagtail Aviation is one of a few select companies in the world currently producing heavy gyrocopters of around 8-900 kg Max All Up Weight (MAUW) and the only company offering this size of rotorcraft for such specialised missions as aerial delivery and rapid deployment. The company’s gyrocopters have been specifically designed for remote, harsh environments and ruggedized with heavy duty suspension etc. Wagtail Aviation is looking at expanding its presence around the world, from Australia to the United States. In Nigeria, the company is looking at operations from airboats (swamp buggies) since in the southern Rivers State there is a big problem with people damaging oil pipelines. Hechter said the plan is to have a big airboat fitted with a landing platform – a gyrocopter will then use the boat as a base and fly patrols, guiding the boat to the problem area and landing back on the airboat whilst crew are sent to repair the pipeline. The airboat will be the deployed base for the gyrocopter, capable of supporting up to two weeks of deployed operations, with refuelling and flight line support. This configuration can also be used against smuggling and poaching operations. Wagtail has also offered its gyrocopters to the Nigerian Police for surveillance missions, with the intention to have the gyrocopters as first responders, fitted with electro-optical and thermal cameras with the real-time downlink. This links the various mission sensors on the gyrocopter to different command posts. Wagtail has also approached the Nigerian postal service for using gyrocopters to deliver post in remote areas. Wagtail has also been approached by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). President Felix Tshisekedi will visit South Africa towards the end of February 2020, and he has requested Wagtail Aviation make a presentation whilst he is in the country." SOURCE: DefenceWeb From the company's webiste: Wagtail is also busy with projects in Nigeria, Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and various other African countries. 1 Like 1 Share

NAF INAUGURATES MAIDEN COMMAND RESPONSIBILITY COURSE AT AIR FORCE WAR COLLEGE MAKURDI The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), yesterday, 24 January 2020, inaugurated the maiden Command Responsibility Course at the Air Force War College (AFWC), Makurdi in Benue State. The Command Responsibility Course 1/2020, which has 24 participants, is designed to expose the commanders and potential commanders to knowledge and skills which would enable them function effectively and efficiently in line with the ethics and core values of the NAF. Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Guest of Honour (GOH), the Chief of Administration (COA) Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Muhammed Idris, while acknowledging the foresight of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for initiating the Course, remarked that in order for the NAF to meet its constitutional role of ensuring Nigeria’s territorial integrity, it needs competent commanders at all levels to provide the requisite leadership for the attainment of organizational goals. According to him, “the importance of having competent, knowledgeable and innovative leadership, especially at Unit level in the NAF cannot be overemphasized”. The COA congratulated the participants for being selected to attend the Course, urging them to make the most of the opportunity, especially because it was holding at a critical time when solutions were being sought to the rampant wave of extremism and militancy currently threatening national, regional and indeed global security. He therefore charged them to acquire the necessary knowledge to optimally utilise the human and material resources under them to achieve the overall goals and objectives of the Service. In his welcome address, the Commandant AFWC, AVM Charles Oghomwen, said the College had developed a curriculum which captures the essence of command responsibilities covering areas such as Leadership, Unit Administration, Financial and Legal Administration, Base Defence, Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) and Air Power, amongst others. He noted that, in order to effectively address the thematic areas covered in the curriculum, the College had selected experienced resource persons to serve as Facilitators for the Course. He further stressed that, the Course would be delivered through a mix of presentations, interactive sessions and scenario handling. All these, he said, were intended to ensure that the theoretical sessions are consolidated with hands-on experience. Also present at the event were the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, AVM Olusegun Philip, as well as Commanders of collocated Units and other senior military officers in Makurdi.
