India did not banned them but made a concerted effort to regulate them. Bad road is the major causes of accident in Nigeria, followed by reckless driving. The policy ought to have been done gradually over time and in phases. While you're gradually banning them, you create alternatives like buses, ferries and metro lines that the govt will employ them into. And these will also serve as alternative means of transportation for the masses. This is a hastily thought out order that didn't take the pain the people will go through into consideration. And governance is about alleviating the suffering of the people not adding. What Nigerian politicians are good at is always adding to our pain with their hastily thought out policies 12 Likes 1 Share |

Let's have love of humanity in our hearts first before anything. Nobody will love to do okada or Keke work everyday if they have jobs.
If we are to compare Lagos with Tokyo and newyork, does Lagos have well organised subway system? Are there functional high speed trains? What about monorails abd tamps? Are there jobs? What about social security, access to credit and business support system?
Bottom line, before the government brings a policy that will in one swoop render over a million people jobless, they should ensure the society is working.
These people are trying against all odds to put food of their table, and the same government that destroyed the society is still the same one opposing them. This Is sad.
Dont out beaty of the state before humanity. I read the guy's comment and I was laughing... All of the point he is making to defend the move doesn't even apply here in Nigeria. 11 Likes |

For me they should grant special licenses to Max.ng, Gokada, and Opay...and set a minimum threshold of say, no more 5 accident cases per.week, beyond which their licenses will be suspended and they are made to pay heavy fines.
They should completely ban Keke. They do one chance too much with that.
They should register uniform-bearing local okadas to ply in inner street ways and alleyways, while they contrive creative ways to permanently nip them in the bud.
Stopping people from moving from point A to B is very unreasonable. It extremely reduces the number of productive hours they have.
And let's not forget that there are only about 3 million cars in a city of over 20 million people. Less than 1% of these 3 million car owners have 500,000 naira and above in their bank accounts. So from another angle, this is a bad political decision that may eventually lead to revolt and breakdown in public order.
Please, Sanwo Olu, don't make Lagos unnecessarily sit on a time bomb. These folks are definitely going to break into car windows in the coming nights and steal from the cars as traffic jam mounts.
My advice to car owners, watch out on where you go, and most importantly go home early or use public transport, and please stop hitch-hiking. 11 Likes 2 Shares |
