Three of the most senior leaders of the violent Nigerian extremist group Islamic State West Africa Province have reportedly been killed by their own men.

Idris al-Barnawi, believed to be ISWAP’s leader in Nigeria, and two members – Abu Maryam and Abu Zainab – who were believed to have led the rebellion that fractured Boko Haram under Abubakar Shekau, were killed for allegedly “going soft,” Audu Bulama Bukarti, an analyst studying the extremist group said.

Bukarti said the trio were killed by commanders that opposed a change in the group’s modus operandi which the trio introduced.

“The new regulation required fighters to stop pursuing soldiers that run away during attacks and stop killing captured soldiers,” he said.

“The commanders felt the rules were too soft and accused the trio of compromising. This led to their summary and execution,” Bulama, who has incurred the wrath of Shekau a couple of times.....

Whole of West Africa & Lake Chad Basin is not safe with ISWAP now a brown camo color uniform (no longer unidentified guerrillas in hiding) wearing kitted mobile light armoured 4x4 infantry force of ex-Libyan Army Academy graduate officers and infantry tactics trained fighting men, no wonder they can well operate our T-55 tanks when they capture them.

ISWAP is stronger by far than BHT. This ISWAP now has defence budget funded by tax levied on Nigerian fishermen and farmers in L. TChad Basin. The only difference between ISWAP and NA is lack of air support, MBT tanks, and 155mm howitzer artillery, ISWAP has now rocket launcher artillery.

Look at their new defence industry products, is ISWAP too building LAV as DICON builds LAV? ISWAP is coming with own armoured 4x4 gun trucks and Presidency senior staff are busy dog fighting among themselves on security matters! This country becomes a comedy joke.

I am not sure the date of this video. Looks like 2019, but 12 months ago isn't too far, but am sure it show weak the average Nigerian Army infantry motorized unit has become, compared to 1980s.

I am not sure it's common practice to post enemy Insurgents videos here, but am sure not everybody saw this video if you did.

Hello, but I am sure the solution is not really army aviation helicopters fleet, our AFV fleet is failing badly as seen in this video, see Cobra APC & Caiman MRAP & BM-Grad MRLS all captured intact from our hands. Look at half way time 1:10 minutes of the video, ISWAP is back with real AAA heavy anti-aircraft, if you fly army aviation soft skin helicopters those ISWAP ZPU-1 will shoot down our new NA birds.

Video:

You see those soldiers of low rank-no rank inside trenches that video, those are the real war heroes whose sacrifice and service, keeps Jihadi Insurgents from entering our own bedrooms to slaughter us like Sallah Rams.

Best way to spend $1 billion and end this war.

Like FG needs 800 mix fleet of BTR-90 & BMP-2 mix fleet of 400 each. Radio comms for every soldier, long range thermal night vision camera & SATCOM radio & perimeter HESCO for all FOBs to be returned back to former positions, 200 modern standard equipped FOB, doing constant 24/7 patrol & offensive at regiment unit level. Then victory can come or else Nigeria becomes a permanent war guerrilla terrorism active country forever and ever.

This war is a big insult to Nigeria of our size and resources . If cash is low, we can take loans with 1 billion barrels crude oil & gas fields as collateral, a war loan to end this war. Why President M Buhari is afraid of loan debt and prefers everlasting war on his country, is hard for many to understand. For those excusing Mr. President for this war getting worse, dont tell me Buhari does not know what a BMP-2 & BTR-90 can do to turn tide in our favour and save this country. Rather ask him why he is not doing it, why he is not rebuilding the army with correct type of equipment, he wears rank of Major-General (RTD) and he was trained in America's best officers academy USAWC Pennsylvania.

Plenty of facts / information BUT wrong conclusion and poor judgement. That always happens with too many facts. People get seduced by the sheer volume and quality then the conclusion and judgement coming from it becomes poor.

Army aviation is the 100% answer to ISWAP/Boko Haram. It is not merely about hitting Boko Harams rudimentary or NA captured armour. It is the agility to move 10 / 12 troops to blocking positions, move mortars / recoiless rifles into new positions within an evolving battlefield, position snipers, evacuate badly wounded et.c. That is the flexibility and agility that is afforded battalion commanders by Army Aviation. The Nigeria Airforce cannot offer this service.

Look at the captured Grad MLRS. Of course it is a sitting duck. A Boko Haram commander merely sends five zealots to sacrifice themselves in unprofessional ways to capture that thing and it's crew. Why would you be driving MLRSs around the battle field? Let choppers be your MLRSs. What about ambushes, choppers on armed scout duty see them building up from 10,000 ft and can engage them or forewarn ground patrols.
I think the NA needs 24 good cheap choppers of the type they already ordered. I would even take them over UAVs.

Unfortunately, there is no historical record of any land war that was won by army helicopters. Army always win on ground, even all the gulf war air power did not end Iraq war, US Allied force had to win on ground because the enemy is strong on ground.

It is an army that has failed on the ground that runs to the sky for refuge.

USArmy helicopter history, read it up, in Vietnam war US Army Aviation lost over 5,000 helicopters.

http://www.ww2wrecks.com/portfolio/5086-helicopter-losses-during-the-vietnam-war/

USSR Army helicopter history, also read, Soviet army aviation lost over 300 helicopters to ordinary DShK 12.7mm of Mujaheedin Guerrillas.

"Ground fire, not surface-to-air missiles or MiGs, would account for the majority of the roughly 5,500 helicopters and two thousand fixed-wing aircraft lost by the U.S. military over Vietnam.

As Soviets took a page from the American war in Vietnam and made heavy use of helicopter-borne air assault troops, the mujahideen’s Soviet-made DShK machine guns reaped a fearsome toll of Mi-8 Hip transports, Mi-24 gunships and even jet bombers."

https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/how-deadly-russian-world-war-ii-50-caliber-machine-gun-blasted-its-mark-history-35762

The high volume high activity army helicopter warfare operations you describe and imagine for NA is super power capability, very expensive to acquire and to maintain, plus sustain for long. It will run into billions of dollars cost that Nigeria will lose when ISWAP anti-aircraft firepower that wrecked Alpha Jets begin to blow NA Eurocopter Helos out of the sky, you will see our money burning up.

You forgot same Nigerian Army announced this insurgency was defeated in 2016, but now 2019 they say they need helicopters to defeat the already defeated insurgency. Thats how you know when someone has ran out of ideas and is looking for excuses, and that is the main reason the majority of Nigerian populace are rejecting the army helicopter solution, to defeat the already defeated enemy.

Look at that ISWAP video of 2019 and see ZPU-1 AAA gun truck in action, your army helicopters will be like mosquito facing Baygon insecticide spray. Losses we cannot afford. After helicopter losses fail to end this war, our army will ask for NA aviation Su-25 Frogfoot to resist AAA fire.

ISWAP is another type of Demon Entirely it's just like Nigeria fighting Terrorists In libya,Syria,Mali,Iraq cos literally that's ISWAP.Our military needs to step up their game it's not only all about hardware but other things needs to be involved ( Proper leadership) Our troops are ready to fight and are more capable to fight these devils but the higher powers are pulling their morale down.Secondly Our Neighbouring countries are doing little or Nothing to stop this guys from carrying transborder attack.I wonder why France Mirage and Rafael jets,MQ9 reaper drones are in Chad and Niger.I Mean I wouldn't believe ISWAP base is Nigeria NAF Heavy pounding in the lake Chad has forced them to Move into the Bordering Communities.Since the borders are Porous in those Countries,And they don't do anything they Have enough time to Recover and Receive supplies from Likely Libya cos most of the hardware ISWAP operate aren't NA Types. They are putting all the work load on Us and if Nigeria falls.West Africa falls. On the part of NAF they need to step up ISR( They are doing their best) What is I tell you the Nigeria military knows where Leah sharibu is? Proof(1) The military says they are going to Rescue Her but they are been careful in order for the terrorists not to do something stupid. They are trying to avoid the Failed SBS bid to Rescue British captives in Sokoto 2014(Not our SBS but Britain SBS) Proof (2) I believe they are monitoring her movement via ISR.I remember vividly Boko Haram claimed NAF had bombed the Chibok..NAF immediately released a video of them Monitoring them for Hours. But many people thought they were not found.Lastly The army aviation truly needs to come alive and they need dedicated attack helicopters. For the meantime UCAV should be used for strike their missiles are freaking expensive....

CAPACITY BUILDING: NAF INAUGURATES ANOTHER SPECIAL FORCES INDUCTION COURSE AS IT COMMISSIONS OBSTACLE COURSE, RAPPELLING TOWER IN BAUCHI

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 28 February 2020, inaugurated another Special Forces (SF) Induction Course and commissioned Obstacle Course and Rappelling Tower at the Regiment Training Centre (RTC) Annex, NAF Base Bauchi. Speaking during the occasion, the Guest of Honour (GOH, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command (AOC GTC), Air Vice Marshal Idi Amin, noted that the contemporary security challenges facing the Nation had necessitated the training of more personnel as Special Operations operatives. “These operatives enable us to achieve effects outside the perimeter thereby conferring upon us the necessary advantages to confront asymmetric threats”, he added.

Speaking further, the CAS disclosed that, in line with his Vision to transform the NAF into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of airpower in response to our national security imperatives, as well as one of the key drivers, which hinges on human capacity development for improved professional performance, the NAF had increased the number of personnel recruited into the Service with a view to building the capability of Regiment personnel in protecting NAF units. He further noted that the NAF had trained 4,000 personnel both locally and overseas to meet specialized needs in Force Protection. He added that the NAF had also built specialized training facilities such as Commando training villages and rappelling towers for the continuous training of Regiment/ SF in Kaduna, Ipetu-Ijesa, Gusau and Bauchi.

While congratulating the students for scaling through the grueling screening process, the GOH, charged them to imbibe the attributes of special operatives which include honesty, courage, perseverance and adaptability to enable them earn a place among the elite team of NAF ‘PANTHERS’. He also seized the opportunity to appreciate the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for the priority attention and support given to the NAF, which, he said, has impacted positively on the NAF in the areas of training, operational efficiency and improved welfare. He therefore assured of the NAF’s unalloyed loyalty and commitment to continue supporting the Federal Government’s policy thrust of providing security, improved economy and fighting corruption.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commandant RTC Annex Bauchi, Wing Commander Kehinde Akinyosade, said the course was aimed at equipping trainees with the necessary skills, tactics and procedures required to function effectively as operatives in the NAF SF unit. He further mentioned that the RTC, which is tasked with conducting basic and advanced training for personnel of the Regiment Specialty, has 2 annexes in Bauchi and Ipetu-Ijesa, which conduct specialized training for desert and jungle terrain, respectively. He further disclosed that SF Course 6/2020, which is the second being conducted at RTC Annex Bauchi using indigenous instructors, has a total of 117 personnel, comprising 7 officers and 110 airmen/airwomen, who were selected from an initial 275 personnel who reported for screening.

The occasion featured live firing at the shooting range site as well as the commissioning of a 40ft rappelling tower and obstacle course, which has 23 different apparatus including the sky scraper, ‘Burma’ bridge, deep pool, treble stride ditch, 15ft double wall and swinging duck bridge, amongst others. Another highlight of the event was the crossing of the obstacle course by selected students of the course. Dignitaries that graced the occasion include the AOC Special Operations Command, Directors from NAF Headquarters, Commanders of co-located NAF units as well as heads of other security agencies in Bauchi.

It is noteworthy that the NAF is currently conducting Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) training for 35 Regiment/SF personnel at the RTC Annex Ipetu-Ijesha, while 2 more SF courses are planned to take place during the year. One is expected to take place at the 211 Quick Response Group Owerri and the other is expected to hold at Toru-Orua in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

INTERCEPTION OF 140 UNITS OF GAS CYLINDERS & A TRUCK LADEN WITH 600 BAGS OF NPK FERTILIZER BY OFFICERS AND MEN OF FEDERAL OPERATIONS UNIT ZONE B, KADUNA.

In stemming the tide against smuggling, Officers and men of Federal Operations Unit Zone B,Kaduna arrested 2 trucks laden with 140 units of refurbished gas cylinders smuggled into the country from Niger Republic. Similarly, another truckload of NPK fertilizer was arrested along Jibia/Agangaro axis of Katsina state. After 100% physical examination, the said vehicle was found to contain 600 bags of NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer smuggled into the country.

NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer falls under the import prohibition order, and as such, bringing in such product violates section 46 of Customs Excise and Management Act (CEMA) CAP C45 LFN 2004 which states that any goods imported, landed or unloaded contrary to any prohibition shall be forfeited.

In another related development, 200 pcs of used tyres, 90 bales of second hand clothings and 322 kegs of vegetable oil were also arrested along Katsina/Kano axis.

In the same vain, operatives of the unit attached to Ilorin/Jebba/Mokwa axis made another discovery of new antics deployed by smugglers to evade arrest . Large quantity of smuggled rice were criminally sandwiched between watermelons in 2 trucks, which further examination revealed 400 bags of rice (50kg each). The duty paid value of all aforementioned seized items is N185 million.

Compt Mustapha Sarki- Kebbi expressed his determination to sustain the ongoing onslaught against Smugglers calling on business community to avoid trading on prohibited items.

Thought you guys have hibernated/finally gone for good. As usual from ISWAP, this is a mix match of old video's. An army aviation is the way to go; but it all depends on the quality of platforms that will be bought, even some replies on the twitter handle are advocating this.

List of emerging Def-Sec reports :

1. Fed house of Reps Abuja, current 2020 new special purpose, expedited bill, to create/invest a new dedicated fund outside normal budgets, to fully retrain and re-equip NA, NN, NAF, bill has passed first reading, now passed second reading successfully. Means at high speed, heading for NASS passage. FGN has no power to refuse it.

2. NAF 3 JF-17 Block II upgraded variant at total cost $184 million with full block 2 options will arrive NAF bases, in FOC, to join combat action this November, confirmed by CAS at Kaduna graduation ceremony. Price package includes all training, dumb ordnance, guided missiles, pods, ground support/maintenance facilities, plus price of each of three planes.

3. FGN Presidency has directly taken over Ezugwu MRAP and entire fleet of new locally made army vehicles. It will no longer be NAVMC controlled project, even with DICON as major stakeholder. Reason is to ensure future success of projects so EZUGWU MRAP does not end in failure like dead Igirigi APC.

Implication is; Presidency decided to grant financial support and admin participation consistently into the future, by adopting Ezugwu MRAP as a part of President Buhari's 2015 promise of local military industrial complex to be paid for within a few years in office by his FG administration.

4. Some legislators are complaining that this new military retraining and weapons/equipment procurement bill is passing so fast without Army publicly accounting for all past special funding for North East CT-COIN war for a decade.

That minority group of reps are saying that must be done before this new jumbo fund is released, fund created separate from annual budgets, meant for modernization procurement - modern training. Reps majority is not insisting on the past accountability (is this a good idea to soft pedal? Who knows?).

This new wave of special modernization procurement funding is a result of massive pressure from Nigerian masses through their reps in their constituencies, till the pressure boiled to yield result now in Abuja NASS. It will be a Reps/Senate alone project but will be finalized and Presidency asked to accent to this bill for formalities sake. The House of Reps has listened to the cries of the people.

NAF has publicly accounted for all it's capital procurement funds except for Mi-35 and Mi-8 / Mi-171.

NN too accounted for spendings on all OPV, some MPV, IPV, gunboats spending and some helicopters.

NA needs to please, open up, on past procurement spending from at least 2014-2020 so as not to stall this new juicy fund opportunity, we the people fought hard to win this new high speed modernization package for you that we even included army soldiers retraining, after our letter upon letter, petition upon petition, NGO upon NGO, community elders upon elders, till begging yielded the fastest bill in our recent DefSec history.

Money for equipment will be in billions of dollars and not dependent on any bureaucratic, slow, limited budget, all those $50 billion CBN Reserve, $2 billion, or $3 billion special reserve funds, now hands will enter those bags to bring out special funds from different sources.

DHQ please do the easy part, submit few pages paper details of past half decade military spending, so we can have a new shopping time starting 2020. Let good guys have new things to post here having tried enough repeating your same old equipment over 5 years.

Don't let this new chance get stalled by the minority reps who are standing on transparency of past transactions. Thank you NA, please wake up, please cooperate, Nigerians are begging of you, forever war will damage the quality of our lives nationwide.

The Egyptian IFV is characterized with it’s light weight & the STANAG4569 / Level4B Protection against mines/IEDs also it’s equipped with 12.7mm RCWS & Q-Net armor to provide protection from RPG attacks

OPERATIONAL VISIT: CAS RESTATES COMMITMENT TO ENSURING SECURITY IN NORTHEAST AS HE COMMISSIONS AIRCRAFT HANGAR IN MAIDUGURI

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has restated the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to ensuring security in the Northeast of the Country, working in concert with sister Services and other security agencies. The CAS made this disclosure today, 1 March 2020, while on an operational visit to the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in Maiduguri, where he also commissioned a newly constructed Aircraft Hangar, which is large enough to house 12 Alpha jets along with associated equipment.

Speaking further during the commissioning ceremony, Air Marshal Abubakar remarked that his frequent visits to the Northeast Theatre were aimed at keeping constantly abreast of activities of the ATF with a view to ensuring that frontline personnel have the support they deserve and that their welfare needs are met for enhanced professional performance. He therefore expressed delight to again be in Maiduguri to interact with the troops as well as to encourage them to remain committed to their duties while being proud of the sacrifices made to ensure that Nigeria is secured and its people protected from the purveyors of evil. The CAS further disclosed that Headquarters NAF, on its part, would continue to provide the requirements of the ATF to sustain its effectiveness in the performance of its assigned tasks. According to him, “We will do everything humanly possible to provide all your requirements to ensure you are effective in the discharge of your duties”.

The CAS remarked that it was in furtherance of this commitment that the Aircraft Hangar being commissioned was disassembled from its erstwhile location in another NAF Unit, where it was underutilized and relocated and re-assembled in Maiduguri, where, he said, it would undoubtedly be more effectively utilized for enhanced operations. He added that the relocation of the hangar was brought about by the observation that NAF Technicians had, over the years, been carrying out maintenance activities in the harsh Maiduguri weather, where temperatures reach as high as 48 to 50 degrees Celsius, in order to ensure that there were serviceable aircraft for the pilots to fly.

Moreover, the CAS noted that the harsh weather conditions also have adverse effects on the avionics and other sensitive equipment of the aircraft when they are left out in the open, exposed to the harsh Maiduguri weather. He said it was therefore decided that a hangar needed to be provided to give some level of comfort to the personnel engaged in maintenance activities so that they can work in a less stressful environment, rather than in the open. This, he said, would also preserve the life of the aircraft, especially the avionics and other sensitive equipment. Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed that the entire project, including the building of the enclosed offices and other facilities within the Hangar as well as the extension of the apron, was executed through direct labour by the NAF Directorate of Services.

The CAS concluded his remarks by commending the Commander ATF as well as his subordinate Commanders, officers and men of the ATF for their efforts, noting that there was no other alternative than to put in their very best to defend the Nation and its values. He urged them to continue to work hard and remain focused on the task of ensuring that Nigeria’s territorial integrity was not undermined, whilst avoiding distractions from unscrupulous individuals and subversive elements.

Earlier in his welcome address, the ATF Commander, Air Commodore Precious Amadi, while thanking the CAS for his frequent visits as well as his continued commitment to the welfare of personnel of the ATF, restated the ATF’s firm dedication to the fight against insurgency in the Northeast. Before departing Maiduguri, the CAS, who was accompanied on the visit by the NAF Chiefs of Training and Operations as well as Aircraft Engineering, was briefed, behind closed doors, by the ATF Commander on the status of ongoing air operations.
