Tobrasky:2500 words of empty and ignorant rant . We are talking about the immediate aftermath of the July 1966 counter coup here . Lol, who told you there was no Northern officer in the Eastern region immediately after the coup ..You are the one with a single digit IQ here . Get proper books and read . Stop depending on Radio Biafravd . Even goodygoody, the op didn't argue about Ojukwu being in a police station during the immediate aftermath of that coup . I know it's shameful thing to do . A soldier hiding in a police station . Even shame dey catch me for Ojukwu too 7 Likes 2 Shares |

itsme01:You are correct, Aguiyi Ironsi messed up....he believed too much in united Nigeria and handed over most of his security watch posts to Northerners despite warnings from other southern officers. He thought he would convince Northern Jenjeri soldiers with Queens English that he knew nothing about the first coup and maybe also he relied too much on his useless staff jazz called Aguiyi and he paid the grave price of his stupidity and stubbornness 3 Likes |

Tobrasky: Thats the whole point. That Brigadier Ogundipe should have been the next head of state after the death of Ironsi. But nobody supported him, not even his own people. Only Ojukwu stood by him. But as soon as Gowon pushed Ogundipe out of Lagos and assumed control, Yorubas flocked to support Gowon 5 Likes |

franchasng: Aguyi's approach was to meet and discuss in a gentleman's manner, and that was what he was doing flying about, unfortunately things where so bad that the northerners where so much pumped with anger and hate, they broadcasted it in their radio, their kings met regularly at Emir of Zauzas palace to discuss their revenge, their military did and even their scholars all met at ABU Zaria.. it was almost like the single most planed and uchestrated violence Nigeria ever had... the northerners gave other Southerners (Yoruba and Bendel) option of staying neutral or risking full blown war.. Aguyi's main option where clear and even Ojukwu advised him also as his loyal subordinate.. execute Nzeogwu and other captured soldiers who killed sarduna and publicise it to pacify angry north, then form a supreme military council that had Northerners with you ruling in Lagos instead of south dominated hierarchy.. he still didn't listen, unfortunately he paid dearly while Nzeogwu he protected later gave intel to northerners during the Biafra war and got full military honorary burial after he died in civil war battle . |

gidgiddy: you just keep making a mistake not getting how coup works, you better read about sergent doe's coup... coup isn't about seniority or who support you or not.. in a novice term which perhaps you might understand, if a country was a secondary school, and the head boy was to be Aguyi in ss3, even if Jss2 students wage a coup and successfully seize full control from the head boy a JSS3 student who lead the coup instantly becomes the head boy except he nominates someone else Don't owe Ogundipe anyform of loyalty, has the coup that brought him in lead to the death of Samuel Ladoke Akintola our primere and head of western government, he and Ironsi with the help of Prof Ben Nwabueze canceled regionalism and formed unitary constitiution which they populated civil service heads with ibos sacking others.. ultimately Aguyi was neither our friend nor our enermy and ogundipe that added the death of our leaders deserve non of our support gowon was loved and supported because he was neither an hausa nor a Fulani but a jos Christian neutral person and a minority 5 Likes 2 Shares |

YeeboMuslim:I know you are very daft, and you are unabashedly arrogant about it which makes it all the more impressive. Listen I don't engage in hollow brained back and forth arguments bereft of substance and any form of historical facts.. So let me give you the benefit of hope that you actually have a brain... please by all means indulge my curiosity by providing all your facts( show me where I can find these so called books) that revealed how Ojukwu "hid" in a police station, and while at it mind naming the Northern officer that remained in the East after all Northern troops had been repatriated back to their region? I have my own version of facts ready and handy, I'm waiting for yours. |

unbitchable: You are a wholesale idiot. If the coup was successful, why was Nigeria pluck into war? The coup was not successfully because a military installation in Nigeria did not recognize the leadership of the coup plotters. Only dumbass fool such as you would regard a coup successful when the leader of coup did not venture into certain section of a country he claims to govern. What a dunce. 2 Likes |

seunmsg: Ogundipe had Nigerian soldiers who were of Yoruba ethnicity and had returned to their region of origin at the time of this debacle. It was the majority of these Yoruba Nigerian soldiers that formed the Lagos and Ibadan garrison organization which gave rise to 2nd and 3MCDO Divisions of Nigerian army. |

itsme01: By the way, Hassan Katsina was a Major while Adebayo was a Col. Katsina cannot instruct Adabayo to do anything since Adebayo was Katsina's superior officers. Katsina cannot be Adebayo's friend. In addition, Adeyinka Adebayo was not even in the country when January 15, 1966 coup was precipitated. I do not know why certain goons come to Nairaland to regurgitate crap. Buhari was not even a company's commander talk less chief transport officer if such silly position existed. In addition, Capt. Theophilus Danjuma was not Agauiyi Ironsi's ADC but was principal staff officer. Ironsi's army ADC was Lt. Sanni Bello while his Air force ADC was Flt. Lt. Andrew Nwankwo. 2 Likes |

Dedetwo: Really? You expected Ogundipe to put together an army comprising of only Yoruba soldiers and fight the northern coup plotters simply because he wants to be head of state? Would he be the president of south west or Nigeria? What you’re suggesting would easily have led to a civil war immediately and considering the fact that Yorubas were not really much in the rank and file of the army at that time, it would have been suicudal. Ogundipe took the right decision by leaving the country. There is no sense in fighting a battle that cannot be won. That is one lesson Ojukwu learnt the hard way. 8 Likes 1 Share |

gidgiddy:The attempt at historical revisionism by these Afonja idiots is appalling to say the least, I'm yet to see any of them tell us why no single Yoruba leader opposed the appointment of Gowon over Ogundipe- a broad daylight robbery and circumvention of the military order of command and ranking. Only Ojukwu vehemently refused to accept Gowon's appointment, and despite overtures and threats from the Gowon regime stuck to his guns... meanwhile all the yoruba officers, civilian leaders etc just kept quiet and played it safe from a distance while their son was been brazenly disrespected by the North. 3 Likes |

gidgiddy: Methinks that, like chloroquine, they find that fact too bitter a truth to swallow! It’s mind-boggling though how they let the Fulani get away with so much impudence, yet if Igbos do just 5% of that, it’s panic-stations and they sound the alarm bells that Yorubaland is about to be taken over! |

Ogundipe was actually the next most senior officer after Ironsi. He should have taken over. Even Obj was practically forced by Danjuma to take over after Martala Mohammed was assassinated itsme01: 1 Like |

XANDERBOY85: Thats the one thing I never understood about Yorubas. When Igbos supposedly do something wrong, they scream and shout about it so much. But when Northerners do something that is 50 times worse, Yorubas downplay it as if it is not so bad. The examples in Nigerian history are abound: Yorubas refer to the first coup as an 'Igbo coup', but they never say that all other coups that happened in Nigeria were 'Northern coups', not even the one that kicked out Shonekan Yorubas like to trumpet about Ironsi's decree 34. They even say that decree 34 ended federalism. But in essence, all dcree 34 did was unify the civil service. It did not deIineate the borders of the 4 Regions and neither did it take away from the 4 Regions the essential ingredients of true federalism such as resource control, fiscal responsibility or the revenue sharing formular agreed at independence. But the same Yorubas will never talk about Gowon's decree 14 that abolished all 4 Regions, replaced them with 12 states, 6 of which went to the North that was one Region, removed resource control, ended fiscal federalism and changed the revenue sharing formular to favour the North. The average Yoruba man will never say that Ojukwu and Gowon met in Aburi Ghana and signed an agreement that would bring peace and that Gowon broke that agreement with decree 14, but he will blame Ojukwu for causing the war even though it was Gowons fault. Even with this thread that Ojukwu stuck by military tradition that the next highest ranking officer should always take charge in the absence of the most senior officer, they cant admit that Ojukwu stood for their own brother, Brigadier Ogundipe, when they could not. Even the Vernom the average Yoruba feels towards IPOB who were unarmed and never killed them, they dont feel it for armed herdsmen who murder them every day They just cant admit that when Ojukwu stood up against Northern domination, even against their own son, Brigadier Ogundipe, when they just couldn't do the same. 7 Likes |
