It's been a challenging one ever since I kickstarted this project. Nevertheless, it has been very rewarding. I have been able to expand the market in pushing out a minimum of 150 kuroilers at age 4 weeks every 2 months. The demands keeps growing. Recently, I also started up with a few Foreign turkeys (Nicholas breed). I would be opening up a thread for it. 3 Likes |

I've been following your thread back to back and I love every bit of it. What about your turkeys? Could you post some pictures of their current age and size? I have some local turkeys myself and will appreciate more information about their management. One of my turkey hens has laid 12eggs and still counting, I'm worried that the more eggs she lays, the longer the time they're left without incubation and the lesser the hatchability. Has anyone here had such an experience? |
Re: My Kuroiler Birds From Day Old by jidestroud(m): 3:38pm On Feb 29, 2020 |
Thanks for the positive feedback. Let me start by stating this is my first time raising foreign turkeys. For locals turkeys, got a few years experience on my hands and I can say, it's quite simple. Well, I do mill their very own feeds for them and not tempted to raise them with other poultry birds again. Like you know, there's the myth out there that says turkeys needs to be raise with chicks due to their sluggishness, which in return helps them eat better. Big fallacy!!!! I raise mine alone and they in fact do better. Like I said, I give them their own feed milled to account for their growth stages. Will be sharing pictures of the foreign poults later. 1 Like |

Blackbelly:There is no problem ones the eggs are well fertilised it will hatch it . They sometimes lay up to 15eggs before they will start brooding. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Turkey hens are one of a kind. So far so good, I have only bn blessed with a good turkey hen, the rest are just carefree and careless mothers. Yes, you are correct to say fertility decreases over time, cos I have had to use an incubator in hatching and the recommended duration advised is usually a week old eggs. I have also employed the use of local chicken hens to hatch their eggs but I find that too stressful for the hens (28 days plus ain't moi-moi) Nevertheless, your turkey hen hatching naturally wouldn't pose a problem, by instinct it should know when the time is right. (I once had a turkey hen that layed 28 eggs ) 3 Likes |

jidestroud: Wow! 28 eggs That's really a rare occurrence. Did it hatch the eggs? Mine has laid 14 now, and I'm already concerned about the depletion of calcium in the bird as the bird seem weaker and not as active as before. |

Blackbelly:Worry not Just make sure the brooding space is ok. May lay more before it will start brooding |

Walexz02: I can finally heave a sigh of relief, the turkey hen has started brooding after laying the 18th egg today I can't say if it'll lay more though. Believe me it was frightening to think that it won't show maternal instincts. The only problem now are the 'oversabi' turkeys that are squeezing themselves into the clutch to brood the eggs alongside the egg layer. I'll have to isolate the mother hen and her clutch of eggs to prevent damage. 3 Likes |

Blackbelly:I salute you people that rear turkeys. Those things most especially the female ones are highly destructive (they eat plants) and are terrible noise makers, making noise up and down like they are looking for something they lost . They will climb fence or be wandering up and down making some irritating noise like they are looking for a lost treasure. 9 Likes |

BoluwGoldenFarm: Thanks Boss. Quite a loss, never saw it coming though I do get incidents of snakes sightings on the farm from time to time. One of the counter measures I have employed over time is the introduction of cats on the farm. Can't say much about the cats killing snakes but they sure reduce rodents population and in turn reduce the pull factor for the reptiles. My turkeys are on free range and the possibility of using chemicals are out of it. On the Kuroilers, I was getting it from Afrimash not until it was removed from their site. Moreover, I have been hatching some of my kuroiler eggs using the OBJ Farm in Ota. Note: I don't sell chicks hatched by myself biko. I grow those to table size. 2 Likes |

I am enjoying this thread. I grew up in a home where we raised Turkeys and Chickens, and also Rabbits. So, I am familiar with some of the things said and discussed on this thread. Turkeys can truly be annoying and they fight a lot, especially the males. Our Rotweiiler dog used to be the mediator in the fights . Turkeys on free range eat all kinds of things apart from their normal feed. And they grow very big in about 12 months. We also had a Poultry in my father's house. I remember those days ( From around 1998 to 2013 ) and I smile when I read similar stories on Nairaland. Rabbit Meat production will surely be a big hit in Nigeria. Cheers. 6 Likes |
