History has it that traditional rulers of igbo extraction are no so powerful/influential to meddle in politics.
What do u mean by not so powerful?
So obi of onitsha, a first class king is not so powerful?

Seems u guys don't really know what traditional rulers stand for.

I don't blame people anyway.

Thanks to ibadan tabloids we now have effizy kings.

Somebody even said most igbos don't know of obi of onitsha.
He is not a social.media king.

What is this one saying. They remove crown from your head, removed you from your throne, stripped you of all your title and privileges, banished you away from your kinsmen and kingdom and given no right to return and turn you to a commoner in a foreign land. What then do you call that if not being dethroned ? You go school?

But the write-up left something important out. To the Benin, he was still the Oba of Benin. Only just in exile. He was never replaced on the throne. It was impossible. The crown prince only became Oba in 1914 after Oba Ovonramwen passed on in Calabar, In most other places, his brother, cousin or even his son would have yielded to the British desire to be a puppet King. Not in Benin.
Obaseki took over.
It doesn't matter what the people think.
Dalai Lama is in exile, it will be a stretch to name him the leader of Tibet

The only traditional ruler on this list that should never have been listed is the Oba of Benin.

That was a king who resisted the colonial slave masters and was exiled (not dethroned) by them because he chose not to be their pawn.

Ovoranmen Nogbaisi is a hero and should be treated as such.

This is all nonsense.
Ogiso era came to an end despite being literally the "sky god" and more powerful than the Obas.
Oba of Benin can be dethroned and replaced and nothing will happen.

It took a the British government to dethrone Benin Oba.

For those dragging Oba of Benin into this, it's not gonna be easy for the governor.
The only untouchable person in this country is the president himself when he's in office. The Oba is not untouchable, he can be removed anytime and nothing will happen

The dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi as the emir of Kano has continued to generate reactions; some say it is expected going by recent happenings but others are still in shock. There are also those who claimed a revered traditional ruler like the emir of Kano has never been treated in such manner. Some even said such cannot happen in certain parts of the country.

But the dethronement of emirs — or those in similar positions of authority — is not an entirely new thing in Nigeria; one of such events played more than 100 years ago when the oba of Benin was deposed and sent on exile.

Here are seven influential traditional rulers who have experienced such.

OLUWADARE ADESINA, DEJI OF AKURE

Who remembers Oluwadare Adesina, the former deji of Akure, who fought with his wife in public? He was dethroned after the public brawl with Bolanle, his wife, an act that was widely described as a public show of shame. The Ondo state government deposed Adesina in 2009, after invoking sections 17(1) and (2) of the state’s chiefs law, accusing him of conducting himself in the “most dishonorable, condemnable and disgraceful manner.”

The dethroned king was also banished from Akure for six months. The council of kingmakers had called for his deposition, while his estranged wife, now late, sued him for battery.

OVONRAMWEN NOGBAISI, OBA OF BENIN

Apart from not being in good terms with then British government, part of the cause of the dethronement of Ovonramwen Nogbaisi as oba and his subsequent exile in 1897 was the murder of James Philips, then acting consul-general, during a visit to the Benin kingdom.

The oba was captured by the British authorities and tried in accordance with the British law; he was subsequently found guilty before being deposed. He was said to have angered the British government through various actions such as forbidding his people from trading with the British and barring the white men from entering Benin after he discovered a treaty signed with the government was a “tactic to annex Benin into the British Empire.”

Another of his actions that did not go down well with the authorities was the stoppage of palm oil supply to Itsekiri middle men in 1896. He reportedly took the action because they refused to pay their tribute to the oba, a move seen as puncturing the business of the British merchants in the region.
its ill conceived to classify this oppression as deposition.. it was a cowardly act by people who will never want to be called animals but would never agree to be called plants...

Don't tell me about Google.

To dethrone someone means you take his crown, he ceases to be king even in death, and place it on another person.

In Benin Kingdom, only death takes the crown.

Oba Eweka II was the first son of Oba Ovoranmen, he was crowned king after the death of his father in Calabar.

Mind you, Ovoranmen's body was returned to Benin and given a King's burial according to Benin customs.
His resting place is on the grounds of the Palace, only Obas are buried there.

Now you are the one who should go on Google to confirm everything I have written.

The Case of AKURE makes it clearer. The GOVERNOR acted on the Wishes of The People. Mimiko didn't dethrone until the people asked him to do so. Traditional Rulers are Representatives of God on Earth and God's Trustees for the Land, Language, Tribe,.Time and Tongue they represent.
The British applied Colonial Rules to the cases in which they got involved with NIGERIA.
Awolowo saw far into the Future what others around him, including Azikwe couldn't see. He had the opportunity to prevent undue Advantage being taken of his YORUBA TRIBE and he ceased it like a Master.
Current Cases of Emirs' Dethronement leading to the present WIP are resultant Bastardization and Violation of the people of NIGERIA's Fundamental Rights.
The Federal Constitution divorced Traditional Rulers from Land Control and handed such Controls over to Governors who were then wholly Military. Ganduje now acting "GANG UP CHOP N CHOP" HOOLIGANISM with Traditional Rulers is an extension of some borrowed Military Prowess.
GANDUJE has not behaved like Mimiko. So let the case go to Court.
The People hire their Traditional Rulers. And only the People can fire their Traditional Rulers.

Grant Full Autonomy of Police, Resources and Elections Control to the 37 legit States of NIGERIA and all Problems will be done with.

You were making sense until you mentioned Azikiwe, my question is this: why can't you Yoruba people say a word without calling igbos? Your hatred for igbos who had succeeded in making impoverished you landlords in Lagos is second to nothing. Desist or be consumed by it.
