Most if not all South African cities have names in different languages. In Xhosa it's called eMonti & obviously it's East London in English. Plus, we have many English-speaking people of English ancestry over here, I believe than any other city in SA.

The origins of the name, a British somebody of high rank (during colonial times) was reportedly homesick, so he requested that parts of the city be restructured to look more like where he was from- East London. That's how the city got its name.

Take in mind the cost of putting skyscrapers and how it will impact to aesthetic of a city,. although, there are many cities with no skyscrapers but far much developed than those with skyscrapers, I can site example of Casablanca, that city is just perfect the way it is, right from road quality to iconic low rise buildings, You can't start comparing dwarf cities with numerous number of shanty houses and pathetic roads with cities hosting six or five skyscrapers!!! You get along with your neighbors because you are too much ahead, I guess. None of them believes its feasible to compete with you any time soon. But its a little awkward, I'd expect all countries that SA colonized such as Namibia to be somewhat hostile to you guys? Maybe the racial dynamics in SA make it impossible because only one portion colonized them. How do you relate with Angola, language barrier aside?

Township is an old term from the Apartheid era for black neighborhoods. A South African equivalent of Ghetto. Many of the townships are now referred to as suburbs because of the development that have taken place over the years. Most are cities within themselves. However, we still call them townships.

The name may just be a coincidence cos the dude named it after the US writer Ernest Hemmingways, whose works he liked and who used to frequent the Kenyan coast.
