So, for some of us who started out teaching ourselves programming, one of the major challenges is knowing and following a defined pathway to becoming a junior developer. We tend to get distracted and demotivated and also, timing the learning process is somehow difficult.
So, what was your learning path(roadmap) to becoming a web developer, an app developer or really, any field? Also, if you're self-taught, kindly share the structure and pathway you're following. Thanks.

To answer topic I'd recommended videos to any one going into programming. For JavaScript I chose, this is what's working for me so far. A combination of these five YouTube teachers. The Net Ninja Dev Ed Brad Traversy Techsith Web dev simplified Always start a new topic with The Net Ninja. Node Js, rest APIs, OOP, mongo dB, whatever, never start with Traversy. He is more thorough and deeper but less beginner friendly. Always think of techsith when searching for explanation of concepts like the 'this' keyword, scopes and closures, async/await etc. Check DevEd for an all-round additional knowledge on front and back end Web dev simplified is magic with projects. Brad is too of course but web dev simplified doesn't overwhelm even beginners. I can't stress enough the importance of books. Here's some of the books you shouldn't miss for a JAVASCRIPT newbie. 1) Beginning JavaScript 5th edition 2) You don't know JS all five books of the series(keep for last) 3) JavaScript functions objects and arrays by Tony de Araujo. Big NOTE!! In learning JavaScript from videos you will hardly be informed about the need for learning such things as the SOLID principle, algorithms and data structure. That's why you can't take research for granted A book a recommend when going into data structure 1) A common sense guide to data structure and algorithms. Dont be scared of the name, Algorithms is really all about being adept at manipulating arrays and object to make them into desired new outputs. Take time out to learn array and object methods and work on problems on freecodecamp. Most of all important PUT IN THE WORK Stay hungry never let failed vultures eat your dreams like carrion 19 Likes 3 Shares |

Nonetheless helpful contribution to people who may need it. Subsequent contributors should take note to outline just the roadmap for e.g say start from learning this to this and end with that. That's why brad is there. In learning web dev you don't only download the core tutorials but also what they call 'talk' videos. I have a folder full of them. I assumed anyone fully understanding what 'research' means wouldn't ignore a video by his teacher that says 'Guide to being a self taught developer 2020' Videos like 'common mistakes made by programmers', 'things I wish I knew as a programmer' etc from techsith and DevEd are also useful 1 Like |

Good luck. For your info my message you quoted was me asking him to remove my name from the list cos I frankly feel disgusted having me and a pathetic, jobless wastrel like you who is more interested in what is in other men's pants than his own failed career mentioned in the same list. That would be a strong incentive to quit. Nevertheless I contributed my quota. Do yours and tell us how you spent 6 years building portfolio only to end your career on nairaland selling dead scripts. started from HTML (nd now we're here lol) which didn't take more than two weeks to master.
Next was CSS which lasted for about a month or so..
Next was Graphics Design for web development which did not take time. I also learnt how to create 2D animations because I was really interested in designs . Presently, we use CSS3 and JavaScript combination to create animations and transitional effects [/b].
Next, I took a break and started building websites to test my skills. Also I was a student throughout my learning years. Within the period of one year I had deployed several websites for showoffs to impress friends lol built portals where past questions was sold to jambites I was already making real money by this time(even though I was still learning).
Next, I ignored JavaScript(even though I already scratched a little bit of it) and delved straight into PHP which was very sweet. By this time I was already building real life applications for people(free of charge, though I was also making small cash sha..). I also scratched a little bit of Python, Java, et all but I later settled for PHP.
Next was database administration which was also very sweet. Normalization and complex queries was scratched.
Next, I came back to JavaScript the love of my life which I took for granted lol.
And then finally, I scratched a little bit of android app development using the various JavaScript frameworks.
Nowadays we really work with frameworks though. I like Cakephp lol and codeigniter.
I wouldn't want to write about the resources and materials I consulted during my learning years. I have physical notebooks on those subjects. 8 Likes |

HTML: Started with The sololearn app(very Indepth and interesting), Read lots of PDFs(Including HTML books for Professionals written by the people of stack overflow), used sites like JavatPoint.com to leverage my skills
CSS: Using more of the resources I used earlier to educate my self, started creating static websites, apps and port folios.
JavaScript: Sololeran was there, Videos From Lynda was there, JavatPoint was there, W3school was not excluded, FreeCodeCamp, Good people of StackOverflow. Created I can't count apps and website, became a freelancer, Created PW-Apps, Even the clocking system for examination for my school, e-libriaries etc.
PHP: hahaha, with the help of my gathered resources with the little i learnt, Created a Cloud platform for my dept in skul to facilitate direct Result checking, Created a Secured election web app, Currently building a web app(Generate reports, receipts, get Infos etc) stored in MysQl database based on a contract. Still: developing my E-commerce system with my own construted server.... Yeah did i forget that I start powering servers.!! Its been a Journey like wow... To get started, I am a Graphic Designer and was tired of doing one skill, I venture into programming.
I started learning Python which took me 3 weeks to master all the basics, then I was like is that all?. I made a research on mobile development and web development, opted for web development, decided to go for Django because of its heavyweight and full stack development over flask. Well it has been 6 months of learning Django, the learning curve gets deeper everyday and have built alot of projects with Django such as; functional blogs, Super Heros websites I built for my company, colleague management system I built for my company as well.
In between, I was learning Javascript, mastered the basics within a week because of my Python knowledge, I started learning React, I built some websites with Django as my backend, React as my frontend, apps like where you can search for player and team details in the world.
My Learning Curve Python(Advance python) Django JavaScript React Angular(little knowledge) Java(intermediate)
Right now, I am working on an ecommerce website integrated with stripe payment, music app with React and Django. It was not that easy combining all of this with my job but dedication, passion have made it possible.
All courses I took are from Udemy and Mosh Hamedani, the latter is a guru and a good mentor. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

It brought life and energy to my shitty HTML pages. CSS is super big and it took me sometime to master it, but it was fun and interesting. CSS including advanced CSS and Responsive Design took me 3months. While learning CSS well enough I started building some projects including replicating some designs I saw on dribbble. After learning CSS, I proceeded to learning a CSS preprocessor (Stylus, Less and Sass, I chose Sass, don't ask me why). A CSS preprocessor makes your CSS super dope and it also adds superpower to it and in fact, it can make your CSS fly, yes it give them wings. Not only did I learn a CSS preprocessor, I also choose a CSS framework too and that's where bootstrap comes in. Bootstrap is cool, I love it. It make my CSS a while lot better and it's easier to learn. Actually, there are many CSS frameworks but I decided to chose bootstrap due to it's popularity and a while lot of coys and developers are using it and not only that, most front end developer jobs I have seen so far requires knowing it. That's very good and awesome but I will suggest or advise you to go for JS frameworks first before jumping to JQuery because according to online stats, many developers are leaving JQuery for React, Angular or Vue... I learnt JQuery for a bit but learning how to use React or Vue is much more better and will simplify your work. Though nothing is better than having full knowledge of vanilla JavaScript but JS frameworks make life easier and super fast to build web apps. Just my suggestion tho. Good job on your learning curve 4 Likes |

Taofeekdboy: That's very good and awesome but I will suggest or advise you to go for JS frameworks first before jumping to JQuery because according to online stats, many developers are leaving JQuery for React, Angular or Vue... I learnt JQuery for a bit but learning how to use React or Vue is much more better and will simplify your work. Though nothing is better than having full knowledge of vanilla JavaScript but JS frameworks make life easier and super fast to build web apps. Just my suggestion tho. Good job on your learning curve Thanks for your suggestion bro. Once am done learning JS I will pick a framework before heading for jQuery. With regards to framework, am thinking of going for Vue, it's not that popular, easier to learn than other JS framework and it's gaining traction. What do you think? |

Yes bro, though I haven't started learning Vue but have read about it as well, more developers are jumping to it, and it's gaining popularity but why I prefer React is because it has a larger community and when you reach a brickwall, you can easily get solution to your problem but I am thinking of learning Vue at a later time. You can choose between React or Vue but don't jump into Angular now unless you have a big projects you wanna work on because of its learning curve, very wide and steep learning curve. React is bae and easy to learn as well. I still prefer React to Vue tho. |

RemiAbdulSamad: Yea, the dude didn't answered the question but at least he provided some helpful learning resources. I was about referring you to Brad video about web development roadmap for 2020 when I saw your post. You can also check out CodeStackr Web Development Practical Roadmap 2020.
As for me, am a self taught front end web developer and here is how I got started.
Right from onset, I love design and I knew I wanted to be a front end web developer building and designing sites and web apps.
I searched online for how to become a front end web developer and I was welcomed by answers suggesting that I learn HTML, CSS and JS. I also meet some pro wen developers during a particular Google Developers Fest I attended and I was told to learn HTML, CSS and JS if I want to be a front end web developer.
Now, having know what I need to learn, the next thing is to get learning resources. Coming from a non-computer science background and with no cash for coding bootcamp, I decided to teach myself coding.
I start by downloading w3schools offline version, ebooks and some video tutorials and courses on HTML, CSS and JS worth over 300GB.
After getting the learning resources, the next thing is to get my hands dirty and start learning.
Firstly, I started with HTML. HTML is f**king, oh sorry, I mean pretty simple. In less than 2 weeks I was done with HTML. Note: if you are about to learn HTML, just focus on the basics, understand them and build some simple stuff. Even if it look shitty, just put your HTML knowledge to practice.
Secondly, after I was done with HTML, I was eager to lay my hands on CSS. And yes, CSS is super awesome and beautiful. It brought life and energy to my shitty HTML pages. HTML is super big and it took me sometime to master it, but it was fun and interesting.
After completing my CSS journey, I moved to learning JS. I just started learning JS and it ain't funny but am trying to grab it. I have some some courses and ebooks am going through and I hope I get better at it. Recently, I read it somewhere online that jQuery too ain't bad so I after am done learning JS. So once am dome with JS, I will be learning jQuery and then i will proceed to learn a JS framework but for now I really want to sit my ass down and master JS and also build some mouth breaking and eye popping (am not sure if those words exist, you can google sha) projects.

You have a lot of energy and zeal I've learnt HTML and CSS with Brad's videos and now I'm learning JavaScript from MDN(Mozilla developer network) tutorial articles. I love mdn because their articles are contributions from many top developers and also updated regularly. Also, their projects are dope I'm looking to polish my HTML and CSS skills with MDN as well. I sort of half-arsed the Brad's video because I didn't think it was detailed enough. 1 Like |

You are 100% right, there is a large community of React developers, not only that React is the most sought after by recruiters/companies among other frameworks. But I've got a feeling that with time Vue will definitely take the lead from React. With regards to angular, I ain't that much interested in it, but I think it won't be bad to know one or two things about it. Thanks for your time bro. Success to us!!! |

I'm looking to polish my HTML and CSS skills with MDN as well. I sort of half-arsed the Brad's videos because I didn't think it was detailed enough. Oh!! MDN. I hardly use the site, I prefer W3schools instead. They do provide detailed explanation nonetheless. With regards to Brad videos, I think his best videos are the crash courses and the non-technical videos. Guys like NetNinja videos are more detailed than Brad's. You can also check out Kelvin Powell and Julio Codes, they offer practical and step by step videos. And how can you describe your experience with JS. Am kinda finding it difficult to grab, got some tips to share cc : Grandlord, Taofeekdboy 3 Likes |

Taofeekdboy: To get started, I am a Graphic Designer and was tired of doing one skill, I venture into programming.
Please can I get udemy Django courses from you |

cc : Grandlord, Taofeekdboy I get it that MDN can make you bang your head against the wall several times but I sort of like learning the hard way I just figured out this is your first time learning an actual programming language because HTML and CSS are not really programming languages, so yes, you'll have some difficulty catching up. Well, JS is a good language but I started with python and I'd say it was easier understanding the basics of programming(variables, data types, conditionals, loops, functions, objects, classes etc) with it. |
